This information is fresh from Nokia and it takes some time for retailers to update their availability times. We haven't been sitting on this information just waiting for October to end. Otherwise we could have just waited until November, the 1st to tell you. |

Re: Did your N900 ship today continued
I think having Peter here is a way that Nokia shows that it respects its customers. For everyone who moaned on this thread - you got your answer. Obviously he can't say the exact date, because nobody knows that, yet. I think it's very nice that someone official has spoken to us.
Thank you Peter for coming here and please don't bother about some things you read, the majority here respects you because we are not being childish. |

Bug squashing is not an exact science. It is a black art. I would not like to be in the socks of those developers these days...

Re: Did your N900 ship today continued
Fully agree.
Thanks Peter and Nokia. Keep it going:) Eikido |

Till release I will just play around with the final SDK and have some fun that way ... ;-)

Re: Did your N900 ship today continued
Bug squashing is indeed pain...
I will wait till November-end, if December I dont get my device I will just wait for Maemo 6. Anyway, I can survive with phones the company gives to me for free (some nokia e-series) |
Re: Did your N900 ship today continued

Re: Did your N900 ship today continued
I find it sad so many people complaning while at the some time I think the ultamet goal is to get as many people happy with the released version instead of having people whine about it after the release.
I think the people that need to be impressed the most by the release are right here in this forum. Yet all they want is a device so they can the complain about it not working as it should and so on. Joe Average won't hear of this for probably atleast a month or two after the release really. For those a few after release updates won't matter. But for those that will be using it from day one those are the ones that will make or break it. What I wouldn't mind is getting an email message on the day it is released direct from Nokia. It's released go to your nearest Nokia store and get it. Waiting is half the fun. The other half usually ends in disapointment if it's not handled properly. I'd rather wait an extra month or two and know that the device and software I get then and there will be more vetted and bugfixed etc. The one thing I don't expect in that time is actually a hardware revision - i.e. adding or removing bits and pieces. But I do expect the existing hardware to be tweaked(possible with fixes for issues people have) and the software to be optimised as well. |
Re: Did your N900 ship today continued
I searched myself to see the specs of a nokia n900 FR and an US
US = Operating Frequency Optimized for WCDMA 900/1700/2100 Quad-band EGSM 850/900/1800/1900 Optimized for 3G networks on WCDMA 900/1700/2100 Quad-band EGSM 850/900/1800/1900 FR = Fréquence de fonctionnement Quad-band EGSM 850/900/1800/1900, WCDMA 900/1700/2100 Commutation automatique entre bandes GSM Mode Avion It's approximately the same. By deduction, the US nokia will work in France. But i hope a confirmation :) |

keep delaying it then I'll persuade my girlfriend to pay for it as a festive gift.

Currently there are three UMTS networks deployed in France; Orange, SFR and Bouygues Télécom, all three in the 2100 MHz band, so the N900, idependently where do you buy it, should work with any of theese networks. The main difference between a devices purchased in USA and France will be localisation, keyboard layout, and plug pin of the charger provided with the device. You can buy the device from USA, but you won't get a Frenc keyboard and you will have to buy a charger. |

Re: Did your N900 ship today continued
@Peter@Maemo Marketing
Not sure if you're the right person to ask. If I buy a N900 localy and it comes with a physical keymap I don't like. Is there a way to get that replaced an the nokia service at my own cost for a different one? This has been talked about in other threads dealing with the keyboard but I didn't see any obvious responses. Also am wondering if there are any plans for aftermarket keymaps from Nokia for those that might want a different keymap(i.e. dvorak or svorak or anything more exotic). |

Re: Did your N900 ship today continued
Thanks Peter for at least sparing a thought for us little guys.
I think that the irritation is from the fact that no official information is around... I'd be happy with a sorry but it's going to be November 20th definately because we're ironing out a couple of issues, but till you spoke we had nothing and even then your comment was fairly vague. Say for example JUST 2000 people had this preordered... that works out at around $1million of turnover. It's disappointing when a large corporation is that ambivilent to that sort of income/purchasing power. Luckily I have a non-payment issue on ebay for my N79 so I have time to resolve it before having to shell out for my preorder. |
Re: Did your N900 ship today continued
Thanks for your replies Peter. To be honest, i was just about to cancel my order and not buy the N900 at all. Because its just to much of disrespect from Nokia, i mean come on if i have ordered from their official online shop here in Sweden, the least they can do after delaying it so many times is to send an email to ppl who have ordered and tell them about the delay. Instead im following forums all around the internet to get info about the release. Thats to much IMO.
But Peter being here changes stuff, definitely not my disappointment in nokia, but my appreciation for the Maemo team. Take all the time you need, and thanks for being here Peter. |

Now you guys have a good excuse to put flash 10 and a digital compass right? RIGHT?! :D
|
Re: Did your N900 ship today continued

Anyway, the hardware is apparently final, so it will no be possible to add a compass and flash 10 can always be added via software update. In fact I would not care to have pre-release firmware in my device if I can have it before. |

you know, of course I am glad you are here and telling it 'face to face'. But this is personal and it is related to you. Thank you for being open. On the other side I am getting really bored by this and I am starting to heavily doubt Nokia (and I am not talking about the N900 now!). I was always thinking highly of OPK, but listening to his keynotes and closely following Nokia I get a feeling of him and Anssi becoming more and more out of touch with reality. Nokias direction is great, the transition to a services company is the right thing IMHO and it is great. But it is going WAY TOO SLOW. It is taking year after year with really minimal visible movement. Of course a lot has happened and from a professional point of view I know, that it takes years, but still - it is happening too slow. Delaying the hottest (and first non shameful) N-Series since the N95 three times in a row is only a symptom of what seems to be happening at Nokia. There are so many great and talented people there, I believe more than anywhere else, and the culture is great. Still the sum here seems to be less than its parts. I wonder why. Thanks and best regards, Corwin |
Re: Did your N900 ship today continued
This is a thing i like about apple. In most cases, when they set a date, you will get it that date. And they don't announce products several months before release. We can guess there will be a new product at some keynotes, but thats about it.
I can't remeber a Nokia/Sony Ericsson product i wanted that had been released at the set date. Because of that, i don't give a sh** about SE's Rachael (something i would want if it was available today), because i'm tired of waiting and i know they will use the same routing, not releasing at the set date (i know they haven't even announced it but i know their routines). To be honest, i guessed the same with N900 but there isn't another phone coming soon i want. So if the HTC Dragon comes out before, i'll probably get that one. Eikido |
Re: Did your N900 ship today continued
Thank you for this information :)
Altough I find it a little bit funny, that the Nokia Support don't know anything about this device. I sended an email to the German Support, because a week before they told me, that the device will reached the market this week. The new reply told me, that they don't really know when the N900 will be released. I have to ask Amazon or my retail store, because they know when the N900 will be released. Little funny that Nokia don't known when Nokia release a product :D |

I have waited for N900 even before/since it was announced. First they said beginning of October (in Nokia Germany) then 12th and now 30th, which I still accept. However, now they are pushing forward to November and I cannot rely/trust anymore. Do you trust or believe someone who already 3 times fails to keep their word? I really do like and want to have N900 but.... just my 2 p. |
Re: Did your N900 ship today continued
here's suggestion for release of future Maemo-based devices:
Please offer the device to enthusiasts as soon as the hardware is final. I guess most of us can live with some bugs, as long as we can update the firmware to the final version that will be shipped to normal customers later. Plus we'll report bugs and suggest improvements before the public release, especially if we can get a discount for being beta testers. Just make sure the version is labelled as "N9x0 pre" and is not meant for average customers (just like "Palm pre" :-) |
