Dear Customer

As you may have read in the press, we’re sorry to confirm that delivery of your new Nokia N900 stock has been delayed to mid November – Our N900 stock when it arrives will be the first in the UK and orders will be dispatched on a first ordered, first served basis directly from our Nokia stores. Be assured that you are top of the dispatch list for a new Nokia N900 and you will not get the N900 anywhere else before this date, which for the moment is exclusive to Nokia direct sales channels.

Please accept our sincere apologies for this short delay and we thank you for your patience. Having read several reviews and personally used a pre-production N900 running with Maemo 5 operating system, be assured that the new Nokia N900 will be very much worth the short wait.

If you would like to discuss your pending order please email us at webshop@mobilephonesdirect.co.uk. For more details of the Nokia N900 please visit our new Nokia Retail website www.nokiaretail.co.uk or our main website at www.mobilephonesdirect.co.uk

Kind regards,

Yes, I've just had that as well:)

Re: N900 shipping delayed

Yeah- but my question to them was what they could offer me in the interrim because my contract at Virgin (and more importantly, my PAC code 30 days) runs out on the 15th. If I don't receive the N900 til, say, 20th (or worse) then a) I don't have a working network to use and b) I lose my phone number.

Re: N900 shipping delayed

Don't Virgin just put you onto a rolling monthly charge at the end of the contractual period?

Yes but I cancelled the contract (stupidly, I know, in hindsight) a couple of weeks before it was announced that the release date was to be moved from end of October- so burned my bridges effectively.

Seemed like TMobile would be the answer since Virgin don't do the N900- Virgin runs on TMobile anyway.

Unless I got my maths wrong, it works out cheaper to buy it outright and get a SIM - (that was through Expansys, who don't seem to be doing that contract deal anymore!) Anyway, I'd prefer to pay a bit more and get an unlocked N900.

How about getting a prepaid phone for a month (or two, or ten) until you get your N900. You'd have to transfer the number twice but you wouldn't loose it or your service.

Note that I speak from a US perspective. There may be charges or restrictions I don't know about in the UK.

I've never - personally - bought or been a fan of "cheap" bundled contract based phones. You pay a hell of a lot more money than you would if you purchased the phone outright, and service separately. You also tend to get a bunch of weird and wonderful restrictions on how you can use the phone, and the service. I really find it amazing that a lot of people can't do the maths and realise this.

Actually that varies from country to country. In the US you are rarely offered a discount on a plan because you already have a phone so you pay more for a plan plus an unlocked phone than you pay for the same plan with a discounted, locked phone. Plus, as your plan's term draws close, you will normally be offered even greater discounts on newer phones as an option to renew the plan.

Yeah..but having your own unlocked phone is a great way to look down your nose at those impoverished wretches as you swill champagne and gobble smoked salmon.

Damned paupers.

People can do the maths, and there are some good deals to be gotten out there.

For example, the contract I have with my n900 over 18 months works out about £300-£400 cheaper than buying everything separately and going on an equivalent rolling monthly plan. That includes a get-out fee for my existing contract (2-3 months left to run)

The phone I am getting is unlocked and in the same state as Nokia ships them. I don't see a downside.

Hi there,

Just received this information:

We’ve been given a dispatch note from Nokia showing that they have sent the goods and they are due in to us tomorrow.

I still don't trust them.

Vodafone told me that although my PAC code will run out on 12 November if it hasnt been used by then it will still be a valid vodafone number and i will just need to pay for another month, hopefully Virgin have the same sort of thing.

Sure. Don't get me wrong, I'm by no means saying that there aren't, but the vast majority of people I know seem to be under the mistaken impression that any contract saves them money, which is a load of crap. The majority of them *don't* unless you manage to find some kind of special deal. Kind of to be expected, given that the phone company expects to - and will - make money off you, phone inclusive or exclusive.

I'm personally not in the market for a contract, but the above isn't the only reason why: my expenses are paid by my employer, so I've no need for one.

Blewggghh.. or however they spell a lot of carrots down the pan. Yuk would probably do. Actually I used to like meat but wouldn't eat it now if Nokia paid me.. anyway- haven't we um- gone off at a tangent?

To be honest all these 'possible' dates are actually making me sea sick.

If Nokia dispatch on the 9th- when do we estimate that MPD will have got a shiny N900 through our letterbox? (sorry, in the UK, I should have said).

Typically this is true of 18 month contracts, hence why the networks heavily favouring them (of course you get extra minutes, but more than most will need!) This is even more true of 24 month contracts.

The iPhone 3GS is a great example of this!

N900 price dropped & release really soon?

Price now at $ $582.99 via Amazon only (look here). On the other hand, the Nokia Preorder store claims availability for End October, can this taken seriously after all announcements? (I guess they wanna challenge the Droid release?)

Amazon UK apparently no longer sell the n900... but my order for one appears unchanged. I think it may have fallen through a hole in the space-time continuum.

I called Nokia USA today to cancel. I asked them about the release date and they said Mid Nov. They wanted to know why I was canceling, and I told them I had waited since Sept. so a little more wait was fine to save $130 from another retailer now that I'm not in a Lather.

I've been on contract for so many years, as the phones work out cheaper over the term. But then I'm left with an Orange locked phone with tweaked firmware. I want to be in control and own the hardware and pay for services, like I do with everything else. Contract with 1 month cancellation too. Ideal..

I think it more likely they've disabled the link from the search engine, and will email me in the next day or so that the date is set back - possibly indefinitely.

So what's this HTC Leo thing like?....

Yeah, that was basically the same reason I used when I cancelled mine as well.... shame that they can't just either a) release it or b) have a firm release date - not some vague "we expect to ship in november" rubbish.

Mid November seems really bad compared to the Droid release. BTW: Do companies like Nokia and Motorola (and anybody else) sustain intelligence services to spy their competitors release dates? It is more than coincidence that the HTC HD touch, Droid and N900 are released so close to each other, huh?

More likely it's because it's closer to Christmas (the winter holiday shopping season). Same reason why most major videogames are released around this time. For example (Modern Warfare 2, Bioshock 2, etc..)
