Actually if anyone asks, I always say "You really don't want this phone".

It's half-steath-patronisation (seriously, you'll have no idea how to use this properly) and half-heading-off (seriously, do you know what you'll have to go through to even get this to do a quarter of the things an iPhone can - and even then often worse?).

I've only spotted one other N900 user, a girl - on one of the very rare occasions that I braved the London buses. I might have spotted another one on a train but I'm not that sure. I did see a guy watching porn on his Archos brazen as... well, getout on the Tube though the other day - that threw me a bit.

Isn't that part of the fun :p?

the n900 may not do things that the iPhone can, but then the iPhone can't do things that the N900 can..

It's a 50-50 debate.

N900 club rule #1: never debate with iPhone fans ;)

there's a n900 user community in Malaysia where I'm at (about 100-200 users) but I've yet to run into anyone randomly using it. Most of the time i get the 'what phone is that?' comment.OT strangely enough, quite a few girls seem to be attracted to the UI.

i've seen three customers using N900 in the pub i'm working. all male one in early 20's two in about 40's. last one was an older russian guy who was sleeping in a table, and i tried to encourage him to leave, he dropped his N900 on the floor. i put the backcover back on and gave the phone to him. he was using the neon theme :)

If I were you I'd change the theme to 'reflect' before giving it back, and remind him in russian accent that real man chooses reflect something like that.

for some reason your post just made me smile from ear to ear, :P My n900 goes everywhere except clubbing with me. Unfortunately I've a bad track record with my phones while out boozing, so i fire up my n82 for that. Plus can't beat the pics i get with xenon flash, hehe.

Well I discovered that thread today and guess what I saw in the subway today? Another n900 user on the phone on line 10 in Beijing!
I couldn't talk to him since he was already talking but I took out mine, hoping he would see it. :)

What community is that? I'm from Malaysia (Penang) and never heard of any such community.

Hey! Maybe someone could come up with a N900 handshake or something. So when we meet another N900 user on the street, it'll be a nice way to say hello rather than just flashing your N900 (Androids, iphone users might mistaken what we're doing as barcode scanning).

Ah yes, the journey vs the destination debate :p

My own thoughts are that a pocket computer should be able to do far more - and that a smartphone should be way more no-brainer.

Outside of a Subway/Starbucks (they were right next door to each other) - We talked for around 10 min until I found he didn't have rootsh installed or know what Linux was then I gave him a fake number and walked away. ;)

Yes, this really did happen. He still loved the phone though.

Huntington WV (Marshall University WE ARE MARSHALL) saw no one. Year+ later in the Washington DC area, still have yet to see one. I still get the 'what is THAT' when I bust out the phone... makes me sad, and proud.

Kinda like owning my Gen1 Scion xB... I'm special.

how about an app that natifies you when an n900 user is near your. the distance could be adjustable to the whole world. it could be a chatroom. so that if you select city size distance: everyone in the city, with the app installed, would show up in chatroom.

just an idea.

Re: Spotted, other N900 users....

I own this phone for about 3 months now and spotted a guy in his 30s in the Munich subway 2 weeks ago... that was the first time I saw the Mugen power battery in reallife. Of course its size is impressive, so that guy couldn't be overseen... :D

I ordered one of those batteries for me the same day, as I do care for battery life much more than for the appearance of my favorite toy ;)
5 days ago I saw teenagers making fun of my little brick...

But it feels good to know that there at least 2 users in Munich (me included) with a Mugen battery "modded" N900 now ;)

I was at an IT security function in London last night and spotted two blokes sitting at a table playing with N900 phones. These guys turned out to work for intel / mcafee and were really keen to hear what I thought of the phone. In 11 months I've never come across another N900 user then, whadda ya know, two in one room at a time

I didn't know what linux was or what rootsh did when I got the N900. I've now learnt a lot and was guided by people here pointing me in the right direction. It's how linux grows.
If you walked away because of his lack of knowledge then shame on you.

8-)

Spotted another guy with a N900 in the U6 in Vienna.
We were only talking shortly because I had to send an email and he was reading something on his N900. :-)
Obviously he did not know this forum...
Perhaps we are all that fascinated by our gadgets that we don't
see other people with the same device?

Edit: holidays on the Greek island Thassos.
I was walking around in Limenaria.
Spotted someone listening to music on a N900.
We were talking about the Nokia-MS failure and he wants to get an iPhone because of some problems with his really heavily used N900.
He told me that he rarely visits this forum (I forgot his nick).
So up to now 3 in the wild.

How do you recognize a N900 near you?
I guess you cannot do that OTA via one provider and -even
worse- via several providers.
Not everybody has BT and WLAN turned on...

Re: Spotted, other N900 users....

the app could turn those on. how about 3g to link to a server to shae your gps location?

you can turn it on when you want to chat. or you can leave it open in the background.(but that might drain the batt. really quick.
