Partition on N900, sometimes is unreliable. It is NOT the installer's fault. You may have to manually partition SD and then continue with the installation. Manual partition is good enough, only steps 1-3, formatting is done correctly by installer after partition is good, see thread #419 for details. bun |

If there is a way to do it manually, I would apreciate a LOT if you could point me the way... Edit.: I know about the install page on wiki, but I do have to change some names right? What would them be? |
Re: Nitdroid today, auto-installer and 1st impression and 0.0.8 installation
Ok, I got it to work.
For the ones who want to do it manually, and don't have any previous nitdroid on the phone, here is how I did.: I followed the steps to partioning and formating.: 1. Open up the xTerm and become root with this command: sudo gainroot 2. First un mount the microsd card umount /dev/mmcblk1p1 3. For this step you need to know the capacity of your memory card. The Android partition can only be 2GB, so you need to create a FAT partition that is so large there will only be 2GB left. The number must be in MB, example some recommended sizes are 1, 100, 2100, 6100, 14100, 30100. If its 8GB you can choose a number like 6100MB, if its 4GB you can choose a number like 2100MB. If your memory card is 2GB or below, you can choose 1MB as a number If you do not do this correctly you will not be able to use Android Market! sfdisk -uM /dev/mmcblk1 << EOF ,<YOUR NUMBER IN MB>,C ,,L ,, ,, EOF 4. Unmount microsd again as maemo sometimes tried to mount umount /dev/mmcblk1p1 5. The actual formating! mkdosfs /dev/mmcblk1p1 mke2fs -L NITDroid -j -m0 /dev/mmcblk1p2 Then, I downloaded both /NitDroid-0.0.8-Popov.tar.bz2, and nitdroid/nitdroid-kernel-2.6.28-06_final1_armel.ded via pc, and put them under MyDocs. Then.: mkdir -p /and mount -o noatime,rw /dev/mmcblk1p2 /and cd /home/user/MyDocs rm -rf /and/* bzcat NitDroid-0.0.8-Popov.tar.bz2 | tar xvC /and Then.: As I was already in MyDocs, dpkg -i nitdroid-kernel-2.6.28-06_final1_armel.deb. This set up the multiboot. I just rebooted and now, I am good=) Trying to install some apps now, and I hope people having trouble now will make it work! |

Just kidding. You have installed successfully on your nitdroid, and you are now in the nitdroid initial setup wizard. Depends on your installation, initial run could be very very very very slow and that is normal, as if it is NOT doing a thing. Despite what the screen said, run your nitdroid portrait for the time being, you will encounter ONLY 3 options on the initial setup-screen upon sign into your google account: 1) create 2) sign in 3) skip option is hidden if you run landscape. Hit option 3) skip, go setup your wifi, then log into your google account, reboot. Now this time it is alot faster, right? Welcome onboard, my friend :-) bun |

Re: Nitdroid today, auto-installer and 1st impression and 0.0.8 installation
Yeah nobody seems to be able to see the MicroSD from within NITDroid. I guess it only benefits Maemo. Don't know why this is.
|
Re: Nitdroid today, auto-installer and 1st impression and 0.0.8 installation
I think I know the reason why we cant see the microSD, we are running the OS from SD and what happen if we unmount the SD from the settings? lol~ I can't imagine that!

Re: Nitdroid today, auto-installer and 1st impression and 0.0.8 installation
Hi everyone!:)
This message is for BUNANSON :) I understand you are related to medical field.I am third year medical student and currently looking for a new cell phone to buy as i broke my last one( nokia n73). I am very interested in buying nokia n900 but the lack of medical apps for this device is disappointing. But after reading this post i feel new hope. Can you please advice me if i would be able to install medical apps like epocrates, medical dictionary after installing nitdroid(is it hard/unsafe to install nitdroid on n900)?And would i be able to use these apps without wifi/internet like i used on my previous phone. Sry i never used android os or maemo os. Thanks!!:o |
Re: Nitdroid today, auto-installer and 1st impression and 0.0.8 installation
Or would you suggest buying another phone?
iphone is good too but you have to pay for most of the apps and they require internet.Plus i like the qwetry keyboard in nokia n900. |
Re: Nitdroid today, auto-installer and 1st impression and 0.0.8 installation
No, not N900. N900 requires a lot of attentions. Being a medical student, you rather spend time with your books or sleeping then putting time into a gedget. I personally think, Android is kind of between N900 and iphone, not as rigid as iphone, not as flexible as N900. I would recommend look around for an android phone, there are tons of medical apps in android.
Today, I saw one of my underlings, using a very pretty phone. a little bit bigger than my N900, and is an android phone. It is a Evo. It is very responsive, very quick, and she used as comfortable as her purse! She, absolutely not a techie, explained to me, bunanson, how good is her phone! She also said she bought an option, allows her to tether her laptop thru the Evo and get online! "It is extra, but I like it. Just press a button, your laptop is ON" "How much is your monthly phone bill?" I asked, my underling, the one that I supervise, "It is quite reasonable, $179 per month for me and my husband, everything included" An average joe walking on street, making probably slightly above average worker, knows nothing about 3g or 3.5g, or even android, shell out $179 a month for an android phone. I am just speechless. bun |
Re: Nitdroid today, auto-installer and 1st impression and 0.0.8 installation
Thanks for your reply Bunanson.
Is motorola droid milestone is a good option? Opinion appreciated!!! |

Re: Nitdroid today, auto-installer and 1st impression and 0.0.8 installation
I was trying to install this but NITdroid does not show up in application manager even though I have the relevant repositories. I tried it through apt-get install nitdroid-installer, but it says there are unmet dependencies: bzip2 but it is not installable.
Can anyone help? |

You skipped/missed/did not do step 3), right? ======================================== ... 3) download & install required extra software Code: apt-get install bzip2 wget apt-get install multiboot multiboot-kernel-maemo ... ========================================= No. NITdroid-installer, kernel, multiboot all these goodies will NOT show up in app manager until steps 4) and 5). I would NOT even look for this goodies not if there is any problem. Installation is thru xterm>root>nitroid, step 5) |
Re: Nitdroid today, auto-installer and 1st impression and 0.0.8 installation
For people that are late to the party, everything you need is on thread #1. I have editted thread #1 when new info are available. And I have followed thread #1 to make more nitdroid SD as recent as yesterday, and so far, everything you need is there. No need to browse thru 450 posts, only if you are interested.
Me? I have booted into nitdroid much often then maemo lately and it is really fun to browse android market too, over 100,000 apps. Dont forget to thank the nitdroid developers and project keeper.... bun |
Re: Nitdroid today, auto-installer and 1st impression and 0.0.8 installation
I ran apt-get update then apt-get install nitdroid-installer and it went fine. the installer stops while formatting ext3, so I tried (Step 1 Partition 1-3 and reboot) here:http://wiki.nitdroid.com/index.php?title=N900-install
but I am stuck again. When I do umount /dev/mmcblk1p1, it says umount: cannot umount /dev/mmcblk1p1: invalid argument, I think this is because my memory card is not currently being detected by the device, I have had this problem before, will let you know what happens |
Re: Nitdroid today, auto-installer and 1st impression and 0.0.8 installation
maemo boot
xterm root cat /proc/partitions you should see mmcblk1p2. If not, keep doing partition till it is there. I sometimes have to do it 2 times. I do not recall doing it 3 X though. If yes, partition is correct, ignor the umount command, proceed with xterm/root/nitdroid bun |
Re: Nitdroid today, auto-installer and 1st impression and 0.0.8 installation
i wonder why i cant play racing using the accelerometer when using nitdroid 0.07..it keeps going to left no matter how i tilt my phone..please help

Re: Nitdroid today, auto-installer and 1st impression and 0.0.8 installation
Something annoys me with the installer... why so big UI? I liked it at 800x480, any way to get that back with the installer?
If its doable, i'll reinstall this. (It has bricked my phone once, i wont let it do it again.) |
Re: Nitdroid today, auto-installer and 1st impression and 0.0.8 installation

Re: Nitdroid today, auto-installer and 1st impression and 0.0.8 installation
i tried partitioning using the method u mentioned but I am stuck again.
When I do umount /dev/mmcblk1p1, it says not found so i tried maemo boot xterm root cat /proc/partitions and i can find mmcblk1p2 andmmcblk1p3...i dnt know how that happend...then i try to install nitdroid as u mentioned and i get error msg for each step...something like unmet dependencies...plz helpp... |
