Thanks for the continued development on the OMP, there is no application I use more than this.

So, while we are on the subject of being awesome and adding features, why not make it automagically download covers for albums so that when coupled with the proposed tag editing, I can remove mussorgsky?

Updated MediaPlayer yesterday and now there's no more lyrics being displayed. Do I somewhere manually need to re-enable them?

Text in parentheses is removed, "&"s are replaced with "and"s, then all non-alphanumeric characters are removed and the letters changed to lower case, for example: if the title is "4 o'Clock (live)" and the artist "Emilie Autumn", lyrics will be saved in "emilieautumn-4oclock.txt".

I don't know if you know that it's possible to modify lyrics by choosing "Edit lyrics" from their context menu.

That's probably distant future, but certainly not impossible. ;)

Go to the setting from the titlebar menu of the main window and check the appropriate option.

I can not update omp using the script. It remains the same version. Sep 25 2011 23.39.19
What can I do?

gidzzz 2011-10-14 16:28

Re: [ANNOUNCE] Alpha release of Open Media Player

It only means that the last time it was compiled from zero was over 2 weeks ago, so a better way to see if you've got the latest version is to check the changelogs posted with each release here. You can, for example, play a song and press the cover art. If it toggles the size, then you're alright.

luketanti 2011-10-14 17:10

Re: [ANNOUNCE] Alpha release of Open Media Player

What do you mean toggles the size? When I press the cover art it changes from playlist to the moving bar. Is it good.

I meant that if you've got the latest version, pressing the picture should change the size of cover art from smaller for the playlist to bigger for the moving bar.

Edit: Or better yet, try the atteched build. ;) Besides a more recent date in the about window, you can find:
  • Video bookmarks, including screenshots. When you close a video, progress is saved and restored next time you open that video.
  • Deleting songs from "All songs" is back.
  • Share/delete videos from their context menu.
  • Sliders don't miss short clicks and volume slider in the radio window finally works.
  • Sorting for the video list. "Latest" is by the date when an item was added to the database and "categories" is by the source device, so local recordings are kept together. It's still not a full-fledged categor view, but I guess it's better than a button that doesn't even work.
Also, progress sliders have a new behavior: seeking the media is done after releasing a slider. This way they work smoother, but you can't see the result in real-time. Let me know whether you think it's an improvement or not.

I kinda like it in my iPod touch, when I hold the seekbar and move not only horizontal but vertical too I can make smaller adjustments in the position. This way I have no problem finding a position in a 2 hours mix (I mostly listen to those). For me a seekbar without a "preview" such in this version is a step back. Maybe an option in the settings?

@gidzzz could you check for me why bluetooth headset goes two tracks ahead when "next" button is pressed on headset. The same is with "previous" button, player goes back not one song (or even beginning of the song) but two songs back. It's quite annoying. And i noticed that it's not pausing music when call is made or answered.

I'd really like this beauty to behave like Qspot.
If I longpress a song I can view the whole folder/album.
Very nice when shuffeling the songs.
Folderview in general would be nice I think.

Just throwing out ideas here.

Great job anyhow :)

Strange, I thought OMP has nothing to do with headsets... I don't have one for tests, so can you choose in the settings to "Do nothing" on exit and see what happens when you start a song, close the player and then skip a track?

Hi thanks for all the hard work but i really miss one feature and it frustrates me quite a bit is there any chance of rearranging the playlist by recently added songs first like when i add new songs at the moment they are arranged by tittle name hence all over the couple of thousands i already have but if some how i can press the arrange button so i can have it as recently added and list would change to the dates files were added in so i can listen to all my newly added songs easily! please

Yesterday i thought about it and already checked it, after closing omp buttons work ok, so i think it is problem that one track is skipped by mafw (or something like that, i don't know exactly what is responsible playing music so don't kill me :D ) and second by omp so the easiest way to solve it would be to remove some code lines from omp but i couldn't find this part of code on gitorious.

EDIT: idea with "smaller" album art is great but you can make it even smaller, because the list still is small. :)
And why OMP is not using n900 language packs? Of course it's not a problem for me to understand things like "music" or "now playing" but it can look just better.

What gives FMTX override checks in UI?

Re: [ANNOUNCE] Alpha release of Open Media Player

How about a text view for videos instead of only thumbnail view?

And could you implement shortcuts like mplayer? Ex: left/right arrows = seek 10 secs, and up/down arrow = seek 60 secs. And also important a command to switch audio streams for mkvs.

You could also add a settings pane where user may configure if to stretch the video.

You can rearrange a playlist by selecting and dragging a track (one and half "click" :) ), you also have the automatic "recently added" playlist to listen the last 30 tracks you added to your device.

I wonder if by "playlist" you mean the "All songs" view? zdanee's solution might be what you're looking for. In case 30 songs are not enough, I think I'll make the number configurable.

It disables the notification that the transmitter can't be turned on if you have something in the headphone jack. I've read that it's useful with fmtxd, but I don't have it installed, so I cannot answer first-hand.

Sorry, but I guess something is wrong here.
My main windows has only 2 media player settings wich are: "On Media Player exit:" and "Override FMTX checks in UI".

Nothing else...

In Music or Now Playing view there is no "Settings"-Option in the menu. :( ?

Another strange thing is, even after removing mediaplayer from /usr/local/bin and re-installing with the script the "About" option is showing Build Date: Apr 13 2011 21:58:31

Any ideas what went wrong?

Edit: After using omp_20111014.tar.gz from gidzzz it's working.
Strange that the update script does not.

And another question is, does anyone knows why my mediaplayer in /usr/bin is a symbolic link pointing to /usr/bin/maemo-invoker?
What is maemo-invoker???

Re: [ANNOUNCE] Alpha release of Open Media Player

Whoa, MAG, this is better than the stock media player by miles.

Complaints:
The "shuffle songs" icon is way too small.
The blue gradient highlight around the album is way too big - the stock media player only has about 2px padding on the left, right and top.
Album titles are center-aligned, and thus clip at the left and right if they're too big. Can you just show ellipses if the string on one line exceeds a certain number of characters?

Other than that, this thing is VERY smooth.

Just search this thread for install and you will see it.

Hint: You first need to decompress the archive and then you see the install script inside it.

To the rest of you thanks for some nice work. :)

I'm trying to spot that, but there are many places where you can find an album name. Can you be more specific?

Could anyone maybe, just maybe get a version of this up into extras-devel?

Re: [ANNOUNCE] Alpha release of Open Media Player

Why should one?
It's beta and needs more testing...
For exmaple. The playlist view, while playing doesn't show the name of the songs, neither does it show anything, but after the song is skipped, the item is being showed. So i can see the items only after they've been played

Is that not the point of devel? Stuff which is under development, not yet a candidate for releasing to the mainstream in Extras, but easily available to those hardy souls who want to risk potentially broken software, allowing them to report bugs back?

Hi yes mate thats not what i want 30 recently added songs is not enough i wanted all the songs to be arranged in order as of recently added songs please! Also ive found a bit of a bug which is fm transmitter which i manually set to 102.1 but when ive closed the OMP and use it next time it goes back to 102 and doesnt remember the last set frequency which in this case is 102.1 as 102 in my case has another radio playing plus the car stereo doesnt pick anything up! so i have to manually set it each time!

In most cases this should be in extras-devel, but like CameraUI2, this is a candidate to be part of CSSU, so it will appear in its repo soon enough (I guess) :)

BTW would it mess up any dependencies if a package gets into CSSU repo from extras-devel?

By "playlist view", did you mean "Now playing" window? I tracked down a bug there, hopefully it was the cause. Please try the latest version.

I'm developing this just for fun and in my opinion, building packages is not much of that, but you might see a deb here tomorrow, provided I won't get bored halfway through. ;) Here's the usual installer, in case nothing comes out of that -- and the most remarkable things are:
  • Seek videos with keyboard arrows.
  • Fixed rotation of thumbnail views, visible mostly in the album browser.
  • Items appear in playlists even if their details couldn't be fetched.
  • Ask for confirmation before setting a ringtone.
  • An option to choose between two slider behaviors (seek immediately or on release).
  • Configurable size of automatic playlists.
  • Fixed some cases where spawning multiple windows was possible.
  • Fixed a bug in fetching of playlist items in "Now playing".

Not yet, but I have a plan to take care of translations soon.

I spent some time cleaning things up for easier package building, so from now on it should be pretty painless. In case you wonder, attached deb contains the same version as in my previous post.

It's a good idea to remove files created by the old installer. To do so, run as root:
Code:

rm -r /opt/mediaplayer/
rm /usr/share/applications/hildon/omp.desktop
rm /usr/share/icons/hicolor/64x64/apps/omp.png
rm /usr/local/bin/mediaplayer

Re: [ANNOUNCE] Alpha release of Open Media Player

Will OMP ever include support for UPNP servers like the original Media player?

I ask as unless I have extremely low bandwidth videos, the stock media player will play a few seconds, and them buffer, and play few seconds and then buffer some more. If I copy the video to the N900 then it plays perfectly, and stream happily in Mediabox from the same upnp server.

I prefer the interface of the stock player though, and would like to have a one-stop shop for all my media if possible.

It's supposed to be a full replacement for the stock player and I consider that a significant feature, so yeah, I want it there.
