To be honest, I believe the chances for any kind of interesting 3rd party support were completely killed during Elopcalypse.

Some -- very nice -- stuff will be announced on day zero, but for a few months already I've not been expecting any kind of extended commitment.
If you believe the 3rd party support for the N900 was bad, there is no reason to believe it will improve with the N900+1 specially considering there's no clear upgrade path for the N900+1 (while there was for the N900 -- in fact it was expected for Maemo "to take over" the high-end Nokia lineup, a sizable and most importantly _tangible_ amount of device sales).

Whether that makes such device the best the smartphone market has to offer or the worst crap in history, is up to you...

But, hey, new device. Let's celebrate.

no, I'm not an employee of Nokia or Intel.
sometimes I'm doing work for them (MeeGo afiliated companies). sometimes not. (for example as kojacker said as MeeGo Evangelist for Intel)

If you ask why I'm able to spread some information: I was successful to refuse signing NDAs in the past (could change anytime).
Everything I don't tell you is because of "gentlemen-agreements", because I could lose my reputation.
Everything I tell you could be up to changes.
for example last year I was told that the new MeeGo device will launch in november. that was not the case. I was informed some day in october.

at the moment it looks like there will be a developer device announced before the MeeGo conference and a consumer device sometimes after the meego conference. sometimes means in june as far as they told me.

If a developer device would be announced, how could one acquire it?

Alright, let's wait then. I hope it'll be possible to buy it.

I didn't get a chance.. i literally just flicked around the home screens, although it's not like Maemo 5 home screens.. i don't normally grab phones off random people in bars.. he was fairly polite so i didn't wanna push it.

Look, i've eaten my words.. i totally thought this thing was gonna be a regurgitated E7.. but whatever is under the hood, it's a superior machine to anything i've played with before.. and that includes HTC's wp7 efforts..

I guess you mean a MeeGo/Harmattan device by Nokia.
Maybe not announced for the public, but yes, at the moment I think we'll see such a device.

Viewing outside of Nokia we may see other devices as well. Edit: Next week at the MeeGo Conference.

Dev device would be interesting. As this is a hobby though and I live in a land down under making any dev meeting is near impossible. So any hints would be unexpected but appreciated. Although the wife will probably kill me if I get a new toy.

Bit of an awkward question, but if this thing is real, and we can get our grubby mitts on it during the summer, (and it is actually flippin awesome like we hope) what will happen to the CSSU for the N900? I'm still waiting for a noob-safe package to be released, but if the N950 comes out and is sexier than Megan Fox covered in maple syrup, I'll be all about that and my N900 might have to join his Nokia cousins in my pants and socks drawer ;)

Benson 2011-05-17 02:40

Re: N9 hits FCC???

So tonight I was at the local pub, and this scrawny guy in a black turtleneck walked in with a phone in an N900 case, but it didn't really fit right. I spiked his drink with a potent cocktail of mind-altering drugs so he'd forget it on the bar, then shouted "Anyone know who this phone belongs to!" and quickly ducked out the door before anyone could answer, and took it home to examine.

I think it's the new N950, it looks pretty much like all the pictures on the internet, although the display has been upgraded to a high-resolution amber plasma panel with more contrast, so that's good. But it's not running real Meego. Apparently as part of their deal with Microsoft, Nokia now has a XENIX port (on-line documentation seems to suggest codename "Hartman") to serve as their Maemo successor. The Meego compatibility layers seems to have been replaced with AIX compatibility, which I guess is a step forwards, since I've never heard anyone accused the AIX platform of being on fire...

Anyway, it's now in a dumpster near my house; if someone wants to come get it, feel free. Don't want the corporate-controlled police coming after me for picking up a device I happened to find...

You make it too obvious. I mean, if you'd actually spiked the drink you wouldn't mentioned it here now would you?. Could have been so much better if it would have been more obscure. Still, I appreciate the effort :)

edit: typos and to make more sense

If this developer device will be the one with HW keyboard, I need to get my hands on it somehow. No matter how much it costs, I need to get this thing!

For the lens cover it could be so easy... :(
Just release it without lens cover as it seems currently designed and put a light sensitive sensor under it like at the N900 but don't use it.
This way they could sell a seperate, thicker back cover including lens cover that interacts with the sensor. Everybody would be fine and they could earn more money.
The ones that want a thin device and the others that wants more comfort and a protected camera lense.

But I guess something like this works only at small, innovative Companies without much bureaucracy and a influential quality management system. :(

What´s up with lensecoverless camera´s on phones these days? Who removed the sanity from manufacturers?

Any info on what kind of charging port it will have? Dual ports like the N8, or the familiar risky as hell treat like James Bond would disconnecting the red wire from a tangled mess inside a nuclear bomb micro USB port? Would be nice to put my new phone on charge and not have beads of sweat on my forehead each time I went to unplug it ;)

Re: N9 hits FCC???

My main concern is about apps for this thing. I know there was a discussion earlier in this thread about DEB vs RPM, but will I be able to simply install apps from the extras repos here, or will there be a new set of Maemo6 repos with their own Maemo6 apps? This is the only thing left in my head that would make me wait and see. It's the apps from Extras that is my main love for my N900 - the developers are just amazing.

I hope the Nokia N9 is an excellent device!

it sells really well and a U-turn is made on the WP7 deal. Optimistic - but it might just work if the developers get behind Meego!

Re: N9 hits FCC???

Fantastic amount of interest on a hoax, it just goes to show how badly the need for a new device from Nokia as this thread is endless and will not stop i guess untill the "device" has arisen from hell or heaven whatever the case may turn out to be haha.
