Too bad there is no way to change the user agent because some websites (such as a few Google websites) look weird with the N9 user agent.

some websites let you go to the full one (normally a link at the bottom), otherwise use opera mobile, you can change your user agent, although i'm not sure how to set a custom one (default ones are all mobile)

Avg Idle Consumption 51 mA with 2.5G connection active in background. I deleted all the packages for developers mode and disable it. Something is wrong here

Mine was about 200mA, because every time after reboot there is always command "smartsearch" active consuming lots of CPU. I have to kill it by hand.

What is smartsearch? How to kill it? How do you look up what;s running on background?

EDIT: Anyway, I noticed that the average idle power consumption is slowly droping ever since I uninstalled all the dev tools and disable dev mode. Right now it's showing 39mA and dropping

Re: N9 owners: answer questions & get help!

I dont know what "smartsearch" does. I just open the terminal and check the running processes with "top" kommand. "smartsearch" is my top cpu hog and it wont go away. To get rid of it, "killall smartsearch" and then my idle consumption drops to acceptable level (20mA range). Sometimes I have seen other commands hogging cpu, but normally they have gone away after a while.

"at the bottom" full sites isnt a halfway decent alternative to changing user agent tho. very much a hassle and annoying.

Does anybody have a problem with the AccuWeather "widget" on the Events screen? Sometimes it seems it won't update itself automatically anymore and instead of the temperature only the grey AccuWeather icon is shown...

After starting AccuWeather, is is back there in the Events screen, but disappears again one hour later (I guess this is the automatic update schedule...) Only a reboot fixes this for me (until this glitch happens again 1-2 days later...)

Have seen this too. Also for me the twitter updates fails at times. It's enabled but fails to put updates on the event screen. Hope this might be more reliable in PR1.1.

Regarding AccuWeather I intent to use MeeCast instead, and MeeCast can replace AccuWeather on the event screen. See this post: http://talk.maemo.org/showpost.php?p...9&postcount=75

Yes I get this. My theory has been that its related to using Dual mode and shifting between 2g and 3g networks the accuweather could get lost and just stops udating.

Now we only need to find a way to get it working again without reboot...

So far I have figured out that the event screen "widget" is a sync-plugin to msyncd... Next time I'll try killing and restarting the msyncd process, maybe that's all what's needed...

Well, this might be positive news, or it might mean nothing (this guy's aka jolo @TMO)

But in the context of what Konttori's been saying, it does sound 'mildly' positive.

Re: N9 owners: answer questions & get help!

Hi guys, hope this hasn't been asked before (I've done some digging, didn't find it answered). I bought an N9 some days ago and the guy at the store told me that I shouldn't charge my N9 overnight. "2 hours maximum" or something like that so I don't "damage the battery". Very strange advice given that I've been happily charging all my phones overnight since the dumbphone era.

I've done some token research on the matter. I've noted that overcharging your Li battery _does_ in fact shorten its lifespan, but most phones including my trusty old N900 have something called "dual-mode" charging where it switches to "trickle charge" when the battery is nearly full, thus avoiding overcharging. Unfortunately I wasn't able to find convincing evidence that the N9 has this feature, although that could simply be because its a given for such a slick, modern smartphone.

The manual that comes with the N9 tells me that "You do not need to charge the battery for a specific length of time, and you can use the phone while it is charging". And yet, another section advices "Do not leave a fully charged battery connected to a charger, as overcharging may shorten the battery’s lifetime." (online version here)

I'm almost convinced that I can leave my N9 charging overnight, but I'll admit it - the small nagging doubt is losing me sleep. Can someone give me a definitive answer to this?

@moofang

i've been charging my phones at night since the brick phone days. i wouldn't say it would make a significant impact with your battery. if your really worried, set your alarm to wake up after 2 hours and unplug it :D
or email nokia support with the question of does the n9 have this trickle charge feature like the n900" could explain why some people are saying their phone only show's 97% charged after it says it's fully charged.

As a former hardware developer in electronics (in the mobile phone industry, incidentally), I can assure you that all "modern" phones manage the battery charging the right way and stop charging the battery when it is full.

Typically, the Power Management Unit (PMU) of a phone detects automatically which of the scheme should be used:
- Battery very low (voltage below a given threshold): Charging the battery at constant current, very slowly, because that's where you can damage it and reduce its capacity.
- Normal charge: constant current charging with higher current, and constant monitoring of the voltage (and generally the temperature, through a sensor that is built in the battery, hence the need of a 3rd electrical contact)
- Battery full, charger still connected: waiting until the battery charge has dropped below a certain amount before starting charging again (hysteresis principle, with 2 different thresholds for starting and stopping charging).

So, in short: no need to set up your alarm clock for unplugging your charger. Enjoy your full night of sleep without worries! ;-)

Any good apps to read comics / manga?

Need something like comix that can read cbr, zip & rar files with picture in them.

My N9 is coming soon, putting together a list of apps to set up for it.

Thanks,

I wonder if any works is being done in optimizing the Notification home screen or even the notification for this matter. Because right now I felt that the current solution is to put it bluntly rather resources hogging. Everytime when twitter and FB updates itself on the homescreen, the entire phone feels so lag. Or when a chat notification appears on top of the taskbar, it will just become jerky while I was scrolling down through the pages. That makes the user experience bad.

Hi, my name is Aaron and I'm a swiper.
(You guys say "Hi Aaron")
I started swiping October 17th 2011. I was in denial for a while thinking, "ah it's just swiping, who cares! I can quit anytime I want to" but soon I realized I had a problem.
I can remember the first time it hit me, the first time I realized I was addicted and swiping was part of my life now.
I had just given my dual core android phone earlier that day (that I had been using for 6 and a half months) to my new young asian girlfriend and unlocked it and bought her a class 10 16gb card for it. She was happy with it and we were back at my hotel. She placed the phone next to me and asked me for help.
I picked it up and tried to swipe it. I could not accept that it did not work and swiped it again and again! Finally I came to my senses and remembered what Android wants me to do. But then 30 seconds later I did it again and 30 seconds later again!
I'm here to tell you all there is help, there is hope. The first step to recovery is admitting you have a problem. You have to do it alone. Someone here can sponsor you, someone that knowz what you are going through.
Thank you.

Has anyone tried any ssh client with the N9? Is there a client available?
In such case, will X11 forwarding work (my strong suspicion is NO) ?

What keyboard alternatives are there? I hate touch keyboards to write with and that's main reason why I haven't bought an N9 yet.
Would it be possible to use a tiny BT keyboard?

when you install dev mode it installs openssh client and server..
i haven't really used the client side, but i have ssh-ed into my device a few times.

X11 forwarding... not sure.. sorry,
bluetooth keyboards, i would think they would, but I don't know for sure... maybe i'll try using bluemaemo as a keyboard on the n900 and see if it works on n9.

Any hope for an "adblock" plug in for the built in browser now that it is no longer Mozilla based?

Or should we just block the evil through a host file (how to get to that one?)

I am having troubles setting up the smtp settings for email. I had no issues on the N900. My ISP uses port 25 or 587. However when I try to send email away from home it gives me a error connecting to the smtp server. I have tried searching for solutions but I can't see any.
Any ideas?

Hi. I think there's something wrong with my battery. After full charge it always says stanby time of around 24hours and call time of around 5 hours. It seems that standby uses alot more power than it should. Would a phone reset help to fix it or shall i wait for PR1.1? Because at the moment it's not easy to make it last a full day.

if your connected to services online, push email etc. that will suck some battery. If you aren't online with things like skype/facebook then there might be a background process misbehaving. you can either kill it manually or a reset should fix it (i don't guarantee that though)

make sure you have the right type of secure connection selected (port 25 is normally for a non-secure connection). Also make sure your password is being sent correctly (either none, plain or encrypted), try encrypted first, if that fails try plain. these settings are in accounts>(your email account)>outgoing mail server
