Sorry for off-topic, I tried to catch you on the IRC. Are you still packaging new GStreamer in Mer? I think now is a good time to add Opus to the plugins there.

Unfortunately it is not supported but I will file an internal bug and make sure it gets added in an update. You can however contribute it yourself to mer if you feel like it :)

I also need to make sure that we have the support in libav so it gets indexed properly.

Which new GStreamer? 1.0 branch? If it's that then there is a plan to upgrade but I cannot say when. I can only say I am working on it :)

If the question is not about that then I don't know :)

Yep I meant gstreamer 1.0. OK, I'll add libopus to Mer soon then.

libopus is not alone enough because we use libav for media indexing. libav used by jolla is a bit dated because of the old gstreamer we are using.

I feel it will not be available before we move to gstreamer 1.0 but that is still work in progress.

Since we are talking codecs, what about VPx support? It's not packaged in Mer either, so I guess Sailfish player can't play WebM?

Perhaps we can move this to IRC ? I feel we might be hijacking the thread :s

The issue with codecs is there is a limit to what I can push to the product ;)

EDIT: I forgot to answer your question: There is no support for webm. The gstreamer decoder is missing.

could somebody try to install an android 'offline' gps app? there are plenty free trial versions, like from sygic. i'd beinterested to see how these work (or don't).

also, if somebody owns an n9, could you tell us the advantages that jolla has over the n9?

Does it have any? From what I am watching, Sailfish is a very complex OS. It's the simplicity that made Harmattan so great.

Sailfish tries too hard, ending up confusing me. I may be wrong, dunno.

Let's read what lucky owners have to say.

Is Sailfish better than Harmattan? In ease of use, intuition and sheer looks?

Ok, ok, all this stuff is very interesting, but everyone seems to forget the real #1 question:

And has there been any review by independent agencies, so far its fan boys being fanboys. Objectivity is not their strongest trait.

Most probably because regular reviewers didn't pre-order their Jolla so they don't have one on their hands? Or maybe because they are too big time for the Jolla? Go ask them why instead of tiring people with the same question repeatedly!

Could someone show us how the phone handles video in the webbrowser? e.g. embedded youtube videos on a webpage etc.

Maybe someone can go to www.theberrics.com and play a movie from that website. N9 always had difficulties in playing movies directly from the browser.

Thanks!

Jolla advantages
  • user experience is better on Jolla, feels more natural for touch devices. It is continuation of work that n9 started.
  • jolla is much faster
  • more open
  • Android support
  • frequent updates, hopefully :)
  • has newer technology (newer versions of software packages) and more codecs supported
  • at the start of its journey (n9 is at the end of its journey, for example no more updates, bug fixes and third party software for n9)
  • more up to date web engine (better support for web standards and current web pages/services)
  • lighter weight
  • hardware expansion through other half

N9 advantages
  • more conventional UI (more familar for people from Android, iPhone and desktop)
  • more features on some of the apps like Maps
  • time on lock screen
  • USB access to files works with Fedora Linux (if I remember correctly, didn't test it now)
  • mature product (no many bugs any more), many old third party software available
  • physically smaller

Web browser played fine the video at jolla.com (clicked: "watch the video" below "A new beginning"). Because browser doesn't currently support the landscape mode, the video was not very big on the screen/web page.

I think Jolla is simpler and more consistent in UI design. Jolla requires little more learning because it is leaving behind many UI concepts that you are familar from desktop (and iPhone and Android). After short learning experience it feels very natural (except dismissing notifications screen). Jolla tries to be native touch screen UI, not desktop UI.

I have still had only one phone call after buying it :) Call quality was fine on that call. It is not statistically any meaningful result. I think voice was somehow more natural than with n900/n9. I don't know why it felt that.

Plenty of independent reviews on Finnish sites. The Jolla people are in London at the moment, I guess we can expect a few reviews shortly.

The device should likely have also a serial console to fix serious scr*w-ups ;).
Apart of the contacts near the SIM-card, is there anything else than may look like an exposed connector, perhaps even under the battery?

Re: Jolla User Experience Thread

Here is my thoughts after one day use:

- UI is better than harmattan. It takes little while to get use to gestures but after that it feels much more natural to use than N9.

- Harmattan Feed/Event page is better in harmattan than in Sailfish. I would like to see Facebook and RSS feeds from feed/event page like in N9.

-No Internet sharing. I hope that Jolla adds internet sharing soon to Sailfish.

To sum up: Sailfish/Jolla feels better to use than harmattan/N9
but lacks some features.

Owner of #166 Jolla

I can also agree to the pretty nice call quality. Just this morning tested it with few calls.
  • Voice quality is very natural, as is to be expected on any modern phone I guess.
  • Earpiece volume is much better than in N9 which is really low and quite often annoyingly so. However when compared to Lumia 520, for example the volume does not go that high. (520 has the loudest earpiece volume I know of, it can really blow your eardrums off)
  • The people at the other end also reported that voice quality was good

There's the i2c bus. You can hook a serial-usb-converter to that and compile early kernel initialization to use it as console device :D

Battery life is also quite disappointment. After 3,5 hours, battery is at 82%. Almost whole time idling on the table. Only email sync every 30 mins and 5 mins web browser use.

Re: Jolla User Experience Thread

I can confirm now that the A1-critical bug in Harmattan SMS handling of non-ascii characters is not present in Jolla device :D

Receiving extended emoticons sent from a Lumia device works. Granted, Jolla does not show the emoticons correctly but at least it does not silently discard the SMS like N9 does.

Man this bug messed a lot of thing for me, as i wasn't aware of it and missed a lot of message before i purely by luck spotted the issue while checkin my syslog and saw discarded messages!

Then things became crystal clear :)

But isn't it also present on the n900? i also have discarded messages on it.

I have not tested it on N900, but on symbian devices it works. Symbian (both older and anna/belle versions) behave like Jolla does, they show up the message correctly, only the emoticons are "squiggly squares"
