I have PR1.1 but due to fiddling around with some mafw plugins, it uninstalled some PR1.1 stuff.
Since then, I see Maemo5 PR1.1 update available HAM. Even with overclocked kernels.
I can't install it right now as I don't have enough free rootfs. =P

Anyways, to answer your questions, I'm sure the OTA update will show up and install fine still.

kernel update is split into two packages - kernel and kernel-flasher. Because of that the update process has no chance to detect that you replaced a stock kernel (md5 checksum is not applied to burned kernel image).

So, it will silently replace your kernel.

hi

ok - did an on-device flash of the kernel :

* do a backup, have a pc nearby and know you are able to flash the n900 with flasher-3.5 - just in case
* on device :
- start "softupd -vv -s --local" within xterm as root (thats double v)
- open new terminal
- start "flasher --local -f -k <kernel_zimage_file_with_path>"
- you see the flashing - some secs
- type "sync" to be save all is stored to the discs
- type "reboot" and enter to restart

ps: the 800mhz kernel is not that much faster - than a 600mhz. i leave it anyway as it may increase battery life - i am not such a gamer - so probably the effect in overclocking is not dramatic then !

I was just wondering.. is there a way to OC the graphics chip? PoverVR SGX530? I have a video compressed with xvid at 1.6 Mbps and the playback isn't smooth even though the cpu usage is about 80 % (900/500 MHz kernel). Would overclocking vga help? I know that the extra heat would probably fry the phone, I'm just curious.

// Never mind, xvid is probably badly optimized. h264 at 2 Mbps average L3.0@baseline plays just fine even at stock cpu/dsp.

Hm-m, "softupd -vv -s" prints error like

ERROR: ioctl(SIOCSIFMTU): No such device
ERROR: Unable to open gadget ISI communication device.

What IP interface it tries to open?

EDIT: never mind, just use

softupd -vv -s --local

I've just found this info for the Palm Pre which has the same CPU specs like the N900. Can someone confirm the above mentioned numbers?

44k hours is still 5 years and its not going to be running at that speed 100% of the time unless you use your phone maxed 24/7 and dont sleep!

One thing is for sure in my case. I wont be using this phone in 2 years. there will be something better about.

Id be happy with 20,000 hours cpu lifetime so overclocking isnt a problem for me.

Hopefully i wont burn it out until Q4 when something better will be available :)
