Re: Poll - do you want voice dialing on the N900
Nokia knows how to do Speaker Independent Name Dailing. (SIND). I've seen it on S40 and S60 devices. It was one of the features that amazed me with my Nokia 6133 (similar to 6131).
It would be good to have the utility that SIND provides ported to the N900. I would be prefer if it comes that it be open source. We've seen what this community can do with a function that makes it better. I would take it even if Nokia kept it closed. |
Re: Poll - do you want voice dialing on the N900

Re: Poll - do you want voice dialing on the N900
Absolutely! No voice dialing might be the reason not to buy N900 and wait for the N9. I was really disappointed to learn about this shortcoming... :(
Voice dialing and free voice navigation are the most important right now so plz Nokia, do something. |
Re: Poll - do you want voice dialing on the N900
Greetings!!
I have had my N900 for some time now, and although I am generally very pleased with it, I have one major bug! No Voice Dialing! Nokia seem very reluctant to help! I use the phone all the time from a business point of veiw, and the lightning fast internet, camera, and general versatility of the N900 are a huge bonus, however, much of my work days are spent in the car, and not having something as simple as voice dialling is annoying to say the least. I have a pretty complex sound system in the car, which is fully bluetooth capable, so I thought I'd simply transfer my phone's contacts list over to the radio (as I have done with my N95), but alas, I can't do that either. Does anyone out there in Vodafone world know of any apps or pending updates that may make either of these possible in the near future? Nokia's customer support team are very quick to send out the statutory "Your Message Will Be Dealt With In 48 Hours", but not so good at actually responding to my problem. Any Help Would Be Most Appreciated!! Kind Regards. Andrew. |
Re: Poll - do you want voice dialing on the N900
Hi everyone,
I totally agree that one of the most important applications missing is voice activated calls, everything else about the N900 is excellent, especially made so by those who have created the applications that Nokia has failed to provide. In view of the poor (or should I say non existant) Nokia service, no wonder they are struggling I hope, like eveyone else, that there is someone out there who can develop an application. We all drive, and it is totally dangerous to be trying to call from the phone - I know I should stop! but many other, less superior phones have this function. Let's hope there is someone working on it as we speak! Regards |
Re: Poll - do you want voice dialing on the N900
I have had an E71 since 2008. I activate bluetooth on the phone and put it back inside its case on my belt. I turn on my Blue Ant bluetooth, model ST1 mounted on my car visor and hit the road. If I should receive a call the Blue Ant BT lets me know who is calling via the the E71's announcement of the contact's name.
I simply press the green button to answer the call or the red button to reject it without taking my eyes off the road to reach for my phone to see who is calling etc.. If I need to call someone I reach up press the green button for a second and I hear the beeps from the phone, I say the name of the contact and it dials the person automatically without me having to reach for or take the phone off my belt. It works very well, you simply state the name of the contact as it is stored on the phone. You can also download and use different voices / languages for the "announce caller's name" function and vary the speed for pronunciation so that you can understand the contact name that the phone is promouncing. Once you get used to it it is a breeze to use. The only limitation I have found is it dials the main number (default that you set) of the contact and can not dial any other number that contact may have unless you set that number as a default. Of course I am strictly speaking while driving and the phone is in it's case or on the console of your vehicle. You can announce the name of a contact and the phone momentarily shows all numbers listed for that contact and it then dials the default unless you scroll down to mobile , work, business number, etc. if the contact has additional numbers. In most places it is unlawful to use a mobile phone while driving unless you use a hands free (mobile not in your hand) headset or such while driving. And to the other poster saying that he rather pay more attention to the driving, I agree. I usually indicate to the caller that I am driving and I will call them back as soon as I get the chance to do so. I am not one of those people that as soon as they get in their vehicle they plaster their phone to their ear and commute with one hand on the wheel and chat for the entire time they are driving, sometimes for miles on end without putting the phone down. So yes, it is convenient and affords people that actually drive, a way to communicate and still be within the law of handsfree mobile use when necessary. Some people do not drive and they walk or take transportation everywhere so I can see why you do not need it. In my opinion my N900 should have had it just like my E71 as I miss that feature. Last, most people do not use every single feature, app, program that is on their phone but they still come with the phone should you so chose to do so. This forum is about specific devices which are not really mainstream to the average user as they are content with generic type closed source locked down phones. We are a community mostly made up of open source tinkerers of hardware and software to make the most use out of devices like the N900 which I purchased primarily as my pocket sized mobile computer and my E71 continues to function as my primary mobile due to it's phone features and versatility. I joined this community to hopefully enjoy all the N900 has to offer and look forward to seeing the N900 harness all it's potential as a result of all the hard work and tireless efforts of the people who contribute so much to this endeavor ! |
Re: Poll - do you want voice dialing on the N900

Re: Poll - do you want voice dialing on the N900
Haven't seen/heard people to really use this feature here in Finland.Actually if I saw people speaking to their phones I would probably laugh :)

Re: Poll - do you want voice dialing on the N900
@slender
This is not a feature you use on street. So that's why you don't see/hear it. I use it a lot when I am skiing in the mountains - my phone is tucked in some inside pocket, i wear gloves and it is cold. It is really inconvenient to pull off gloves, open your jacket ( -15C and snowing) to get your phone and dial a number. Instead just pressing a button on handsfree and speaking a name does the trick seamlessly. With N900 I can use only last number redial via BT handsfree.... |
