according to the instructions you should have flasher running first before plugging in cable

just plug into a powered usb port.
I believe that I read somewhere that hubs may cause it not to work. Best to plug it directly into motherboard usb (as opposed to eg front of the computer usb which may also be a hub)

version maemo44

you can't do it the way.
the kernel is made of the static part for one and all the drivers and firmware on the other hand.
for a working system you need both. what you did was to update all the drivers but not the static kernel: that works only in few cases.

so what you need to do is to add the kernel(the static part) to uboot and flash it. or replace uboot with the static kernel.
this is not a problem of uboot or you. this is a problem of uboot and the maemo update which is not working together.(its devel so ..)

as a sidenote 2cts:
solution would could be: don't piggypack a kernel at all on uboot but instead put a boot.scr on the emmc and load the kernel from the emmc. with that you would avoid flashing with maemo updates. but thats a decision maemo has to make.

:)Today I purchased a desktop charger and new BL-5j battery . Upon a full charge handset allowed startup in flashing mode , sucessfully flashed and maemo loads however when switching off the device makes an unusual high pitched beep but maybe thats normal without the power kernel?, thanks to all who offered advice and suggestions to help affected users get back to normal ,

This is the crucial part which a lot of people seem to be missing. The phone needs to be off when you want to get it into flashing mode. While it's off you hold 'u' and connect it via USB to a PC. That will get you into flashing mode. You shouldn't turn the phone on!
Once it's in flashing mode you run the flasher

I just fixed mine by reflashing the stock PR1.3 kernel.

These steps should get you there (assuming you're using windows):
1. Download and install the flasher from here: http://tablets-dev.nokia.com/maemo-d...-downloads.php
2. Download 'RX-51_2009SE_20.2010.36-2_PR_COMBINED_MR0_ARM.bin' from http://tablets-dev.nokia.com/nokia_N900.php
3. Copy that file to C:\Program Files\maemo\flasher-3.5
4. Start -> Run -> cmd.exe
5. In the dosbox change to the flasher directory: cd "\Program Files\maemo\flasher-3.5"
6. Make sure the phone is off.
7. Open the keyboard and hold the 'u' key.
8. Connect the phone to the PC using the USB cable (while still holding the 'u' key)
9. Now you shoul be in flashing mode, the screen should show a Nokia logo and an USB symbol in the top-right corner.
10. In the dosbox run flasher-3.5.exe -f --flash-only=kernel -R -F
RX-51_2009SE_20.2010.36-2_PR_COMBINED_MR0_ARM.bin

11. A new kernel will be flashed, that take just a second and the phone will reboot.
12. Done, you've got a working phone again.

The only step left is now is to figure out whether you want to reinstall the power kernel and which version to use in that case. But if you screw that up you can always get your phone working again using the above instructions, there should be no need to do a full flash or mess around with SD cards.

Make sure you run sudo flasher-3.5.exe -f --flash-only=kernel -R -F
RX-51_2009SE_20.2010.36-2_PR_COMBINED_MR0_ARM.bin
