Re: Clone OS to SD Deb!! Boot from SD made EASY!!

thanks for the answer, but the part that didn't work was the unmounting. I can't get the tablet to let go of the fat partition when connected to my PC. Even with nothing on except the x-terminal it automounts the partition as soon as I unmount it.

Re: Clone OS to SD Deb!! Boot from SD made EASY!!

HeY!
For a n800 with chronic reboot loop tendencies, would booting from an SD be a way to circumvent the problem, or at least allow some kind of log file to be generated which might help with diagnosis? Or does the SD boot process occur too long after the "loop" point (in my case, typically the blue line makes it all the way across the screen, and then hangs for a minute or reboots--I've tried setting the flags)
Sorry if this is a touch off-topic.

Re: Clone OS to SD Deb!! Boot from SD made EASY!!

I don't know if it would help. Yes, booting from sd happens before where your table hangs, you choose where to boot from right after the fist white screen. But to make the clone you need first to boot normally from flash 2 or 3 times.

Thanks for the info, but that is an unrelated problem. I think I'll start a new thread with my problem.

Re: Clone OS to SD Deb!! Boot from SD made EASY!!

Some info for you about my experience.

veho 8 gig card (£13 from ebuyer) mode 6 card. Cloned first time no problem. cloning os2008se 2.2007.50-02 (fairly new install)

Sandisk 2 gig card took 2 installs ( first install failed so I just ran it again) cloning os2007se 4.2007.38-2 (new virgin install)

I then reflashed with the latest diablo os and then ran the bootmenu-installer. this failed to see either of the above cards in either slot.

I have just reflashed this again and I will play around with the initfs_flasher progie.

I had done this dual booting the other day using the "second best method" and all seemed well until I tried to access the vfat partitions . and they were not mounted. They worked with

mount -t vfat /dev/mmcblk1p1 /media/mmc2
mount -t vfat /dev/mmcblk0p1 /media/mmc1

but they did not remount when I rebooted. ( I'm a bit of a noob here)

The wifi was refusing to work as well so I gave up with this clone . Unfortunately I had already reflashed the internal flash so I'm back to square 1 , doh...

Time to play with 3 OS's

great prog mate

edit : Doh stupid noob . I posted this on the wrong thread 8-)

I had to reflash to diablo and run the script again with another spare sd card to get the boot menu to work. the ./initfs_flash didn't seem to want to work correct with diablo complaining that there were some files missing ( sorry I forgot to note them down)

Also the wifi has stopped working when boot to os2007. it scans but can't see any networks (there are several)

Re: Clone OS to SD Deb!! Boot from SD made EASY!!

More info is needed. Did you copy the install tools in a FAT partition or EXT2? What is the exact error message you are getting?

Re: Clone OS to SD Deb!! Boot from SD made EASY!!

when I try to install INSTALL TOOLS EXTERNAL 810 SLOT and also INSTALL TOOLS from here http://penguinbait.com/ I get message that unable to install it, may be I must add catalog in Program's catalog or some thing like that to install it.

No catalog is needed. Run the install and paset the log here

Open application manager menu, Tools > Log

Paste it out here

no avail. 5 consequtive attemps and still no sd boot or clone. i got bootmenu supposedly, although holding home never gets me into any menu and machine continues booting from flash.

log is too big to attach but everything seems normal except a couple of instances of the following paragraphs:

Your menu will not display until you set it to ask:somthing then reboot

Not everyone has this issue, but this should allow the menu to work. Maybe I should update the deb.

Try it and let me know wht happens,

Same...

N810 External. Never booted from SD before, just reflashed to 36-5.

It installed successfully, partitioned the device, but...

EDIT: I am happy. I uninstalled it, and installed bootmenu-installer. It now works.

Re: Clone OS to SD Deb!! Boot from SD made EASY!!

Hi All--I used penguinbait's awesome deb the first weekend I had my n810. I felt that I didn't want to be limited in application storage capacity to the internal flash. The install went off without any problems: clone of flash was good, bootmenu worked, etc. This is currently the only "mod" I've put on my tablet; no kernel changes or anything like that.

Here's my issue: Has anyone in this situation (i.e., booting from internal mmc on an n810 with OS2008 30-2 using penguinbait's process) successfully implemented the 36-5 SSU? If so, could you tell me how you did it? For instance, did you apply the update while booted to internal mmc? Did you also apply the update while booted to internal flash? Did you have to load fanoush's new initfs_flasher? If so, when in the sequence of events?

Sorry to be such a n00b, but I'd like to have as much information as possible before attempting the update.

Thanks sincerely in advance.

Re: Clone OS to SD Deb!! Boot from SD made EASY!!

Starting today I'll be worshipping Penguinbait and Fanoush :)
My N800 was acting weirder and weirder the latest few weeks and my battery lasted no more than 24 hours on a full charge, offline mode, no fiddling... so I was forced to upgrade to Diablo...
Well, I could never expect to find a fresh SSU just the day I needed to reflash, but finding the install-tools updated to support it wasn't even in my wildest dream...
Upgrading ad SD-ing the tablet (SD-ing is the new official name of the process known as partitioning the card, copying the system and making it bootable) was just a breeze, all thanks to you two...

Thank you very much :)

So many threads so little time :)

In application manager, open menu, Tools , Log

Make sure its not already installed, and bootmenu-installer is not installed. If either is, uninstall before continuing

Make sure Virtual Memory is off

Is 810 or 800?
install-tools.deb
(installs to 810 internal slot, external slot must be empty during install.)
(Installs to 800 any slot, can only be one card in either slot)

install-tools-N810e.deb
(installs to external slot 810)

As penguindbait stated in the first post of this thread you should probably reboot and reinstall install-tools before booting from SD, that's because the device needs to be rebooted to read the new partition table on the SD (it was the same with fanoush "manual" initfs-flasher).

Here's what I did:
1) Booting from flash, installed install-tools.deb for the new partitions to be made
2) Rebooted from flash, reinstalled install-tools.deb to copy the system and make the SD bootable
3) Rebooted from internal SD, working like a charm

Hope it helps ;)

hi. i may be the last person left still having problems installing the install.tools. i have tried all of the suggestions onboardthis thread, such as formating the mem card, trying 3 different mem cards, making sure that i have instaled the install tools in flash and not on the memorycard, etc. every time i reboot, i go to application manager, open the install tools, run it, and it always says, found memory card, then takes about 30 more seconds and then says, memory card corrupted or unformated. i then unstall the install tools, clear the log, reformat.the mem card, and reboot and try again. i have tried this about 40 times now without sucess. i am just not clear on two things. i am not sure if i am rebooting correctly. the way i do it is simply hold down the power button and power.off, and then hold down the power button and power back on. is there another way to reboot that iam missing? also, i am trying to make sure that i do not have virtual memory installed, so i go to comtrol pannel, then memory ,then memcard, and make sure the use virtual memory is unchecked. is that the only thing i need to do there? here is my log file. please help. thanks

Oh, and just to add a few things that I left out, I am using a N800, with 0s2008 version 4.2008.36-5, and I have just one memory card in right now, a transcend 4gb card. I have tried using it in both the internal card slot and the external card slot, and I have also tried a kingston 2gb card and a sandisk 1gb card all with no success. I have fomatted all the cards using the N800's format utility and I have formatted each card with the Low level format utility on my pc. I have the install tools file installed on my n800 flash. I first put it in the documents folder, and then also tried creating a temp folder on the flash and put the install tools file there. What else am I missing ??

Hi. Thanks for responding. I have the deb running on the flash in the documents directory. I also think that I have had the virtual memory off, by going into the control panel, then memory then virtual memory tab, then making sure the the add virtual memory box is unchecked. Is there anything else after this that I am missing ??

Perhaps there is an application using it?

You could try booting up without the card in the tablet, then insert the card after booted and run the install..

fibroman 2008-10-02 03:22

Re: Clone OS to SD Deb!! Boot from SD made EASY!!

I just tried removing the memory card, booting up, and then putting the mem card back in, and then running the install tools file in the application manager, and it still does not work.

I also again made sure that I did not have virtual memory running by making sure that the check box in the control pannel is unchecked.
anything else you can think of ??

Do you think that I may need to reflash the firmware or something ??

fibroman 2008-10-02 18:20

Re: Clone OS to SD Deb!! Boot from SD made EASY!!

Well, I went and reflashed to see if that would make a difference and it still does not work.
I even tried to remove the memory card, reboot and stick the card back in the slot just before I run the install tools file, and it still comes up with the memory card corrupted error.
How is that still happening. I have made sure I don't have virtual memory running, and the install tools file is installed in flash.

Perhaps its actually corrupted. Can you get it reformatted and working without using my tools? In windows or another linux system? Even if you plug it in and usb to windows or linux you should be able to format it and make it useable.

Can you use the card at all??

Re: Clone OS to SD Deb!! Boot from SD made EASY!!

The memory card is fine. I was using it with the n800 before I attempted to do the clone. I also already formated this card as well as two other cards that I have tried with the Panasonic Format utility on my windows xp computer.
Very frustrating.
The only thing I can think of is that I am still using virtual memory somehow. How do you make sure you are not using it? The only way I know how is to go into control panel, then memory, then virtual memory tab and then make sure that the "use virtual memory" box is unchecked.
Is there another way to make sure that you have virtual memory off ??

I ran the procedure and it worked great till I shut down and rebooted from the bootmenu into flash. When I rebooted the bootmenu did not show up and it rebooted into flash. I have run the procedure twice. Cloning each time and the same thing happens. Also, after installing rotate I discovered that the install went to flash rather than mmc2. What am I doing wrong?:(

boot to flash and open xterm and become root and run the following command

chroot /mnt/initfs cal-tool --set-root-device ask:flash

mmc2 is partition 2 on internal
mmc3 is partition 3 on internal

mmc12 is partition 2 on external
mmc13 is partition 3 on external

Your menu will not display until you set it to ask:somthing then reboot

Not everyone has this issue, but this should allow the menu to work. Maybe I should update the deb.

Try it and let me know wht happens,

Bingo. Worked fine, thanks. Now I just have to figure out why rotate installed on flash when I was running on clone.

I recently updated flash (SD partition has problems that I really don't feel like resolving so I'll just restart from scratch). But is there anyway to clone my flash to SD partition without redoing my partitions (cause I really don't wanna move all the data off my FAT and back).

edit: I had previously used your script (along with the .txt file to specify the sizes). So I have a SWAP partition and all already setup.

I need to add this to add this to my list, but current'y you can do this, but it would have to manual. Look at the boot from SD threads and just skip the partitioning. Just mount and tar it over. Sorry I cannot be more specific at the moment, I am working from a customer site..

no problem, figured i'd just ask first in case.

Edit: I don't have to format it do I? Just do the mount and tar part?
