Here are settings that work partially for me. They allow me to send/receive to/from my wife and myself. However, I've tried sending a couple of photos to a friend with an iPhone on AT&T and they appeared to me to be sent fine, but apparently never arrived on her phone.

Code:

Access point name:  wap.voicestream.com
MMSC:                        http://216.155.174.84/servlets/mms
HTTP proxy:                216.155.165.50

I guess there was more than one typo in those instructions. I am now using these settings successfully, as far as I can tell.

Code:

Access point name:    epc.tmobile.com
MMSC:                          http://mms.msg.eng.t-mobile.com/mms/wapenc
HTTP Proxy:                  216.155.165.50
Port Number:              8080

Without the proxy I get a gateway timeout trying to send MMS messages. I don't really know what any of this stuff does, and am just groping around in the dark trying to find a working config. I'm on the unlimited web plan, with the internet2.voicestream.com apn if it makes any difference.

I used your settings but I still get a "Unable to retrieve message" error; Just to be sure, I double-checked the settings -- they appear to be correct. :(

Re: [Announce] fMMS - MMS on the N900

Hi, just installed fmms 1.1.9 on my Nokia running 1.2 last nite. Im using the Vodafone network. I have used the setting listed on here and have recieved some totally fine, works great :)

Cant send any though. In the setting section, under 'advanced', I have nothing entered for IP address, primary or secondary. Should I have and where do I get that info?

When I try to send a pic I get the following message....

Operation failed
(32, 'Broken pipe')
Please check your settings

Any help would be really appreciated. Thanks!

Here's a question .. how do I disable fMMS???

The only way I have found is to uninstall it when I don't wish to use it (there are specific times I don't want it running).

I'm a little confused by what you mean by "running"? There is nothing actively running for fMMS except for when you have the GUI open or the push daemon has been activated by a notice from your carrier that a message has arrived.

By default when the push daemon gets info from the carrier about a new MMS message (via an SMS-like message), it stores that data in the fMMS database, and then (based on settings) may try to retrieve the data portion in the background. If you mean you don't want it downloading MMS in the background, jut change the network setting to polite. Then it will always ask before downloading. The push message itself (the SMS portion of the MMS) is sent by the carrier through, and there's no way to stop those, short of going off-line.

If you're talking about the audio message, I'm pretty sure that's handled at the system level for sounds and what not. There's no way to stop fMMS (or most message providers) from triggering the system to tell it that it got a new message. Though you can put the device on silent mode, or use an app like led pattern changer to change the pattern and/or response for each message by type.

If neither of those addressed what you're trying to do, please be more specific on what exactly you want "disabled". It may be fMMS could use one more feature if there's enough people that want it. ;)

I keep getting "Unknown Sender" message and then it show "00000" in the inbox. Clearly it need to fetch the number out of the recieved log somehow and then translate it into numbers then comparing it with the contacts.

Seems to be a bug I guess.

Here's the ideal situation: you have Polite | Rude | Havoc .. I'd like to find out how to have "Off".

I get nagios alerts, but only through fMMS -- they don't go through to SMS on the n900, hence I installed fMMS as a solutions for that.

When I disconnect 3/3.5g data and connect via wifi - I still get the MMS messages from fMMS.

TIA

I'm confused still... 3/3.5G has nothing to do with MMS. And fMMS has no control over your carrier sending MMS push requests to your phone.

Before you installed fMMS the carrier was still sending you the push request, but there was no registered handler on the N900 for that type of alert, so it was silently dropped, never to be seen again, with no way to retrieve the MMS later (unless your carrier has an on-line way to do that). With fMMS installed in polite mode, it gets the push and stores the data it needs to pull it later if you choose to, but does not download the data. Even if fMMS were uninstalled (or not installed to start with) your carrier is still going to send the MMS push requests unless you specifically call and ask them not to.

(PS. I'm not the author of this app. I just happen to know a bit about how it works from looking it over. The app author does occasionally look here though, but doesn't have time to reply to everyone, so some of us help out on occasion. ;) )

Re: [Announce] fMMS - MMS on the N900

i recently reflashed my n900 because it was really slowing down, then i redownloaded fmms. Im assuming it automatically created an mms apn, but then my internet would automatically connect to that connection. i used the app fapn to delete the mms acess point and uninstalled the fmms app. I just read that there was a way to disable the n900 from switching to mms for internet connections, so i redownloaded fmms, but now it did not create the mms access point the second time. any help would be appreciated.

something similar happened to me. what i did was install a really early version of fmms and fapn and manually set the settings. then you have to upgrade to the latest version, and just enter the settings again. for some reason, it worked perfectly after that

Why can't this thing work with wi-fi? As long as i have internet access...i should be able to download pictures. It shouldn't just work with 3G ONLY. I don't have data plan. I just feel like this thing should work without data plan.

I mean i used to have an old old cell phone...like 10yrs ago and that phone can download pictures that come through txt messenging through verizon. And this so called hi tech N900 can't even download picture?? Would it be better to create a program that just access internet without going through Tmobile server?? Maybe that's what email is for...but still if i can use the phone to txt message, i should be able to download images like 10 yrs ago.

hi, thanks for the post. i'm trying to use the fMMS app in netherlands using the latest version(july 17 2010) using the config values for netherlands and kpn from the wiki maemo blog but i'm getting a large yellow error window that has what looks like the source code listed out, and of course the mms doesnt send...

If the device is auto connecting to the MMS APN instead of the regular internet one automatically; runing:
/opt/fmms/fmms_config.py
in the terminal should correct this

I cant get this working. xterminal says the command doesnt exist.

any ideas?

Ok i got it working.

Why is there a difference if i go to map /opt/fmms and try to run fmms_config.py (which won't work) compared to if i enter /opt/fmms/fmms_config.py immediately, it will work?

This is a great program, thankyou for taking the time to create and share it with us all :)

I am having a problem though :( One of the recent MMS that I received seems to be downloading but it never opens, everytime I try to open it, fMMS just keeps downloading it.

When I go to the message fMMS says downloading, then the downloading message goes away with no errors reported but every single time I try to open the message it just downloads again. I have sent and received other MMS messages since receiving this one as well.

I'm running fMMS 1.1.9 on PR 1.2 and my carrier is Telstra (Australia). I've tried receiving the message in both havoc and polite modes. I've attached the logs, any assistance would be greatly appreciated :)

So I have to kill the application. Is there any common misstake that I might have made?

Double and triple check that the settings are correct :)

Last night a friend sent me an MMS message. fMMS promptly started up and displayed "Downloading." It seemed to have hung after several minutes had passed but finally failed with a "Unable to retrieve message" error.

I've tried downloading the message several times using the latest version of fMMS but I get the same behavior described above.

Attached is fMMS's log file -- If anyone can make sense of it I would greatly appreciate your thoughts on what the problem might be.

Check the settings so they are correct, otherwise fMMS can't send the notification to the server that it received the message correctly. :)

Well, it's going to notify you whenever you get an MMS push from your operator - if you want to disable any connection mode so it doesnt try to download while roaming or similar do:
gconftool-2 -st int /apps/fmms/connmode 10

Your 10 year old phone is doing it pretty much the same way as fMMS does it - just it doesn't tell you it goes online to fetch the message (as long as it an MMS, that is), sorry.

Seems there is some error when fMMS tries to parse it (content-length 50 sounds very small as well).

Re: [Announce] fMMS - MMS on the N900

i haven't read the complete thread (too long :-) ), so maybe there was already such a request and a corresponding answer:

a) Is it possible to have all MMS listed like in the conversation dialog (sms), such that there isn't an entry for each MMS but only one for each addresser? My emails are forwarded to my N900 via MMS and the MMS-Conversation-list is huge when each email is listed separatedly. It would be more convenient if all MMS are grouped by the person who sent the MMS.

b) If there's no entry in the the contacts list (i.e. the address book) then the addresser is not displayed correctly. It seems that an arbitrary contact name is chosen from the address book. If you open an MMS and look at the header, you can see the correct address.

fmms is really nice! I hope these (smaller) issues can be resolved, too :-)

Thanks,
nexus

You have to contact your operator and have them make sure that your, on there side, they have the settings that your phone is mms-capable. If the settings on the operator-side isn't set like that, you will only recieve a sms with a link to an online service for checking mms.

Hope this helps

Some providers will change your setting automatically if it sees you sending an MMS as well. You may want to try sending one to yourself or a friend too, if calling your provider is a hassle or is currently not an option.

Dear Developer of this application.

You are a fcuken legend, should be covered in a plaster cast to take a mold of you figure. Once complete, this mold should be filled with Copper and plated with gold. After a sufficient curing time this statue should be placed on a large mountain and a one lane road should be provided for buses to drive up to it and allow people to worship at the feet of the statue. Once prayers are over, someone will collect the group that arrived on the bus in front of the statue, take a photo on their n900 and fmms it to maemo.org participants.

Thank you !

i've sent a sms to my operator requesting mms service and i got a response that my device doesn't accept mms....

also i called the operator tecnical service and he said that the response is automated and they can't manually change it to say that my phone does support mms... he gave me the manual data because I mentioned the app and it is:
home page http://mmsc:10021/mmsc
proxy server 062.169.066.005
proxy port 8799
authentication none or normal

dunno if this will help to fix my problem... but doesn't hurt to say lol

I second janszoon in the post above. ;)

Just installed fMMS on T-Mo US. No changes to any of the default internet connection settings; set it to havoc. Everything worked flawlessly. While connected thru wifi, it opened the GPRS connection in parallel and closed it when done. Did the same when sending and receiving. The sharing plugin is so ingenious!

I know about it since it was launched but hesitated to install it.
Excellent work frals! Thanks!

Hi frals!
Can you add the option for deleting of all messages ? (not one by one)
Thanks

Frals;

we ha a bit of this on twitter but in order to keep the trail properly;

# adressing
In general the look and feel of adressing should be like the build in sms client. giving names and multiple recipients.

# log
I know you disagree but I would still like to see the messages in the general conversation log.

# sharing
when I view a picture and select share using fmms, the caption from the sharing interface isn't propagated to the fmms UI caption field.
