SSH is great. I'm not being sarcastic either in saying that.
The next time you teach the meat of the market how to do SSH will be the first time it was taught.

I kind of get what you are going after, here, but the real truth in here is that the solutions you proposed are something that probably depend on outside resources, some central control point which is between you and your device.
(I suppose so, from what I could find out from Nokia Mobile Web Server and Samsung Kies)

So basically you are trusting your data and your device access to somebody else. Well, that might be okay for you, but I rather like to be guardian of my data and access myself.

These services masquarade as convenience to end-users when actually with a little bit of creative thinking and available tools you can make up a platform for yourself that really is convenient, secure and private.

Nokia's MWS was a mobile web server and Python-driven CMS, pushed thru a Nokia-maintained gateway. The latter being because per their relationships with carriers, the use of a DNS gateway on one's mobile device meant that a user could literally skip the carrier they were on and do other things. Nokia played fair there, but nothing else was on their server. Samsung took everything except the server/gateway side of that tech and made Kies Air - a slightly detuned but smoother CMS over WLAN hosted from your mobile that allows for the management of various aspects of your mobile w/o pulling it from your pocket.

The point of a sever and CMS on your own mobile device - both which were built with open framework, open licences, and open source technologies and behaviors - is that you can manage all of this yourself, without exposing yourself to others.

If people could make it themselves always, then we'd not be having this discussion, because Maemo and the N810 would have been enough. Per the warts of the DIY community, not everyone can - but those who can rarely make it accessible enough that even those w/o their bent can do it. That's the entry point the MWS proposed. It was missed here and especially at Nokia (ask the Jolla board member who was one of the 4 people who created it).

---
Having a server and CMS on your mobile device means that you can create and maintain connections yourself. Every mobile is capable of it, every carrier restricts some important point of it in their terms of use. If people were responsible for this aspect of connectivity and mobility, there'd be a lot less of that central control.

while waiting native geocaching app you can use c:geo. To make it work you must use osm as map source and disable compass (select use only gps in compass view).

Re: What Applications would you like to see on Sailfish Devices?

Allow me to introduce for your please on my openrepos repository (look in my signature)

Hexedit:
hexedit shows a file both in ASCII and in hexadecimal. The file can be a device as the file is not wholly read. You can modify the file and search through it. You have also copy&paste and save to file functions. Truncating or appending to the file is allowed. Modifications are shown in bold.

Nmap:
Nmap ("Network Mapper") is a free and open source (license) utility for network discovery and security auditing. Many systems and network administrators also find it useful for tasks such as network inventory, managing service upgrade schedules, and monitoring host or service uptime. Nmap uses raw IP packets in novel ways to determine what hosts are available on the network, what services (application name and version) those hosts are offering, what operating systems (and OS versions) they are running, what type of packet filters/firewalls are in use, and dozens of other characteristics. It was designed to rapidly scan large networks, but works fine against single hosts. In addition to the classic command-line Nmap executable, the Nmap suite includes a flexible data transfer, redirection, and debugging tool (Ncat), a utility for comparing scan results (Ndiff), and a packet generation and response analysis tool (Nping).

Apache webserver:
The Apache HTTP Server Project is a collaborative software development effort aimed at creating a robust, commercial-grade, featureful, and freely-available source code implementation of an HTTP (Web) server.

Open Garden
Creates a mesh network (and shows you visually what it looks like) between all windows, mac and Android devices nearby and shares internet connections. No root access or USB connection required. Uses GPS and wifi to find other open garden devices nearby to include in mesh network.

Official site with windows and mac apps
http://opengarden.com/

I just tried it on my HTC One and my refurbished and upgraded dell d630 with a tiny little BT dongle that was originally meant for a tiny wireless KB and it worked.
Probably would be nice for you guys using Jolla to have a native client.

From the website here is the list of apps that work and don't work with vpn
http://forum.opengarden.com/vpn-app-list
and their forum
http://forum.opengarden.com/discussions

I assume you have to ask the guys at Microsoft who are responsible for porting Skype to competing platforms. ;)

Has anyone tried compiling/packaging mplayer?

It should be possible with mplayer2 or mpv:
http://wayland.freedesktop.org/extras.html
https://github.com/giselher/mplayer2-wayland

Also SMPlayer would be nice to have and it is already Qt5 complatible:
https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/smplayer-qt5-svn

I would look into it myself, if I had more time (exam period...), but while I know how to compile it on the device or in the emulator, I have no idea how to package it for OpenRepos.

Re: What Applications would you like to see on Sailfish Devices?

The most important application for me is a decent implementation of MMS.

In the n900 we have a third party app for MMS called fMMS. It has so many problems that I can't even bother to use it anymore:
  • Written in python, too slow compared to native apps
  • Its not integrated with Maemo's message system
  • Doesn't receive/send messages! It just stops working
  • Its designed to "send a picture" and "receive a picture". That, and that only.
  • No support for emoji

In Japan everybody uses MMS, not for sending pictures, but as a replacement for SMS. Therefore, with a less than perfect implementation of MMS, this would be useless in Japan.

Any word on the MMS implementation in Sailfish?

Nope not yet.
Xournal was written, and the main app is written, in GTK+ so porting is quite on the time consuming side.
However I know that someone ported the desktop version of Xournal to Qt some time ago and gave the news on the Xournal Mailing List.
Not sure about its status, but could be a starting point.

Probably, however, it'll be much faster to start from scratch and only re-use .xoj handling from original source code and internal handling of object and rely on similar PDF library to port to Sailfish as well.

I did start a New Project on Sailfish IDE called Xournal, but so far, 'Xournal' it's only in the name :)

Re: What Applications would you like to see on Sailfish Devices?

Another app I'd love to see is (a GUI for) Bittorrent Sync.

The Linux binary for ARM actually works just fine executed from command line, but configuration through browser is not quite as nice as on Android app.

Plus, there are some options in the mobile version, like "Backup" and "selective Sync" that don't seem to be available in the desktop version.

Android version on Jolla is not quite doing the trick as I can't sync files outside the Android file system.
