So one year tomorrow since I collected my Jolla, will this be release day too for the next os version? It's been a 1/3 of a year since the last one.

Although I contributed to the Jolla Tablet when it was announced, I wish Jolla had used their resources completely to smooth out the "rough edges" in the Jolla smartphone and given us a stable, everyday phone and then focussed on the Tablet.

Those edges will be smoothened, I'm sure of that. Moving on to tablets is inevitable and would require more resources the later it's done.

Also, for the time being Jolla is a device manufacturer and needs to sell devices to survive. A million € more revenue can't hurt...

its here any day now
Do you rembember that cartoon guy: we aims to release update every month since we are unlike, agile and so forth". Now it looks like one every year...

Nothing wrong with that, just don't try to be unlike when you can't.

Either way. Just send a mail to me when I can upgrade to anything new.

Re: Update 1.0.9.n this week?

Some ppl here lost their ability to count. A ~monthly update cycle would mean that from shipping in Dec 2013 to now, there should have been 11 updates, right?

  1. Dec 9th, 2013: 1.0.1.10
  2. Dec 16th, 2013: 1.0.1.12
  3. Dec 27th, 2013: 1.0.2.5
  4. Jan 31st, 2014: 1.0.3.8
  5. Mar 17th, 2014: 1.0.4.20
  6. Apr 11th, 2014: 1.0.5.16
  7. Apr 24th, 2014: 1.0.5.19
  8. Jun 9th, 2014: 1.0.7.16
  9. Jul 14th, 2014: 1.0.8.19
  10. Oct 23rd, 2014: 1.1.0.38
  11. Oct 24th, 2014: 1.1.0.39

... and that doesn't even include the connectivity trial they did in June, nor does it account for the summer break that should have reduced the number of updates to 10 or 9 (depending on how long summers are...)

Just if you want to know there was 35 usable releases, not only 11 you know. ;)

LOL

You're a tough case.

I'll change to "counting only those that were offered me for download", stressing both 'offered' and 'me' separately. :)

Re: Update 1.0.9.n this week?

@benny1967 actually it was just for fun, i forgot to tell you what i need exactly: update is version bump. 1.0.1.10 to 1.0.1.12 is not update, 1.0.5.16 to 1.0.5.19 is not update, 1.1.0.38 to 1.1.0.39 is not update also.

Matter of definition. Version numbers are just that: numbers. Somebody once decided that Sailfish OS is no longer beta. They also decided that instead of version 1.0.9 there'd be 1.1. It's arbitrary to a certain degree.

If they give me system packages to download and install on my phone, it's an update. What else would it be? In my world, an update isn't defined by how many packages are changed or how big the changes are. 1.0.5.19, for example, was essential for me and made a greater difference in user experience / feature set than 1.0.5.16. Why then wouldn't I count it as a full update?

Re: Update 1.0.9.n this week?

Perhaps they ran into some issues that they are having difficulty fixing. Possibly they are still working on the low memory issues. I do find the opt-in release quite usable though. I'd rather have software released based on progress than a date.

"The system's handling of out of memory (OOM) conditions still needs some work, meaning

The device can behave sluggishly when it is low in memory. This can cause annoyances during heavy daily use of your Jolla. A reboot makes things better, but we understand that this is not something our users want to do frequently.
Common tasks like answering calls, opening notifications, multitasking, switching between apps etc can take tens or hundreds of milliseconds to operate in low memory conditions. For a smooth operation, the OS needs to makes sure that the memory is never critically low.
Communication between Sailfish apps and background processes (daemons) can take longer when the system is swapping in low memory conditions. This is experienced as stutter in the UI and in extreme cases, it can freeze the UI completely."

Re: Update 1.0.9.n this week?

Helsinki, October 2014
New Sailfish OS update is here – for volunteers now, soon to others!
It’s been a while since the last full Sailfish OS software update, and we realize that there are many of you who’ve been waiting a lot for this update. We now have good news for you: we have an update available for you!
After the Finnish summer holidays we started to work on a major technological change in our software development, in technical terms ‘updated our UI framework from Qt5.1 to Qt5.2’. In practice this change makes life a lot easier for e.g. application developers. This is of course just one of the benefits of this change, but it is definitely one of the more important ones.
In relation to the technical upgrade, we have some important fine-tuning still to do, and thus we have decided to give this update to our more advanced users, i.e. to those of you who wish to have it. So if you want to opt-in for this software update (called ‘Uitukka’), please send an email to update9-opt-in@jolla.com.
Read more about the opt-in, and see the full release notes here.
What new in this update?
The most important features in this update are:
New overlays for Maps – satellite, car (daylight mode), transit (public transport) and night mode
Auto save of mail drafts
Account setup process on the phone has been made more user friendly, also new services added: Fruux, Memotoo ja Yahoo!
Experimental improved out of memory handling by Android runtime environment
The next full software update is expected to be ready and delivered to all users during November!
Sail on!
Jolla Team

WHERE IS THE NEXT FULL ******* UPDATE !?!?!!?! COME ON YOU JOLLA !!!

hmmh, expected, not guaranteed.

I know it is always nice and exciting to get a new update, and of course I am looking forward to it.
There's no point crying like a baby, you will not get it a minute earlier by doing so :p

I don't. I have worked for large (>1.5k employees worldwide) and small (3 employees) companies. All I can say on this topic is that the smaller the company is, the more vital it is to keep your promises and manage your customers' expectations.

If you want them, as a company, to survive and continue to improve the software on the devices they run now and in the future, then you should welcome their taking steps to produce new products (earning them more money, which will help finance continued improvements to the OS).

If you want them to die due to lack of funding thanks to their only product being an increasingly uncompetitive device (just being realistic here - it was already not the hottest thing on the HW end when it was released), then sure, perhaps they shouldn't work on something new.

Spelling this out in a slightly different way: the intention, as I always understood it, was to run multiple devices from a single codeline. They don't have the resources, or desire, to repeat the Nokia mistake of branching entire OS development just because the hardware target changes.

tl;dr: The software that runs on your tablet, will probably also run on your phone (with some concessions for different form factors and the like).

Re: Update 1.0.9.n this week?

I think most of us here want Jolla to survive, but it does feel like the phone has been abandoned whilst they work on the Tablet.

I look on these things as a consumer and currently i have a phone that does not work correctly, is not smart and has very few native apps, I bought into Jolla because they were different and I mistakenly believed the offering would be very similar to Meego on the N9. I expected Android compatibility to be a little used feature not one that has become essential.

I would love to see the Sailfish launcher on my Android tablet too but this feature, along with running sailfish on android phones, is too model specific.

The fact remains that monthly updates have stalled and there is very little information coming from Jolla on anything other than the Tablet.

I enjoyed being involved in the early days of the phone and pre-purchase and wnated to get involved. Now there is little official information and jolla.together is so cluttered as to be near useless.

I want to recommend a Jolla phone to friends and family, However I (and I suspect many others) can't do that now and that is something Jolla needs to be aware of.
