I agree, the extra key bounce in OS2008 is very noticeable. Did they increase the sensitivity?

I'm also annoyed that they fiddled with the near-ideal layout - now the useful _ key is gone from the main keyboard, relegated to the special symbols.

Surely they did something: while with os2007 right clicking (i.e. tap & hold) was a pain (most of the times it registered a double click instead), now it's noticeably easier. Pity for the keyboard.

If Nokia is reading this thread... Please, please fix the javascript to get it running faster. It is just nuts that a modern web browser would have so much lag in loading java intensive pages.

Also, why not more system RAM? Seems that it would be easy enough to throw in 512 or more MB at today's prices.

And also that the RAM is an integrated part of a multi-purpose chip. It isn't just a question of deciding how many DIMMs to add (or we could actually have upgraded..)

i was about to order this tablet about an hour ago....I might just hold off now. The one thing that concerned me the entire time I read it was the linux aspect. I'm also in the I.T field, a good 25 years worth, and I am mainly a MS user. I do have experience with Linux over the years among other OS's. However, every time I get interested in a device or linux distro that is "supposed" to a wonderful bunch of things, I try it, and always end up with a bad taste in my mouth. I am just not a fan of linux, and the incredible amount of effort it takes to do the most trivial of things. And my biggest complaint, I'm sorry linux fans, but Linux is far from stable, and the more more GUI it gets, the less stable it seems.

So, my fear with the n800 was will it be stable? My original use for it was to be a mere "remote control" for audio in my HT using a web interface, so perhaps I'll still try it out. I have never been a fan of the Apple Ipods of the world, and while the ipod touch is interesting, I was hoping the more open concept of the nokia would be more useful for other things. My fear here is that its just another Linux based wanna be great at something device that only seems to consume the owners time

I dunno about that.. I've had plenty of desktops and servers running Linux with several years of uptime.

I had one with just over 1100 days, and then the power went out..

My N800 seems to be pretty darn stable so far, I think I've had it a few months, but it's been through a lot :)

newf....a year ago i would have agreed with you entirely but after delving into ubuntu for some months and now maemo on the N800 I'd say things are better than before. 2007 was definitely a good year for Linux and the mainstream.

The sad part is that from my point of view it seems like the elites of the OS, the stalwarts, the ones that count don't seem to want to change their old habits and frankly its not helping a platform that has so much potential.

Stability is not its issue, there is so much Linux can offer, its real problem is its geekiness and the dragging feet of some of its people. It really need to break this bounds and join the party. Ubuntu is great start and Nokia has made a good platform for that move as well. The ball is now in the court of its developers and various elite-ish users. Cater to tom dick and harry, don't so readily dump them in terminal sudo hell.


Anyway, don't loose hope. Buy that N800 or N810, they are very good once you have some patience and you know where to look for apps.

The only times Linux has be unstable for me is when there is an incompatibility with the hardware. If you are using bleeding edge hardware, you might experience problems until the device drivers get a few more revisions. However, this probably only applies to desktops.

lets stick, on topic, my concern was if the n800 was not stable, and this thread certainly indicates it might not be.

I have to admit, the geek in me is still so close to just ordering it.
