Thank you Zim for the firmware comparisons, a very useful post/link!

Thank you! Without this comparison, I would have decided not to update. Now I will as soon as I'm home again.

I waver between optimistic and cynical all the time. I just refuse to think it's over until it's actually over. Haven't seen that last nail yet, so...

Anyway, iFrank: product development these days isn't simple enough to confine to your three options. I'd post more but at the risk of being called a shill. ;)

EDIT: my thanks also to Zim for that great work! :)

Yes, they are technically still selling the 770 (at least directly from nokia.com), but be honest... Brick-and-mortars aren't going to be carrying it anymore. And for good reason: for $40 less, are you really going to buy a 770 instead of an n800?

The new firmware is a great sign that they are still ready to support the 770. But again, let's be honest. They're selling the n800 as a replacement for the 770, not as an optional upgrade. Ari has stressed it himself: they've shifted gears, and now the bulk of their work is going to be focused on the n800, not the 770. Ari is always complaining about never having enough resources to do what's right, and now (for the 770) he has even fewer resources.

So, while they will still do work on the 770 (and we will be grateful), the 770 would have benefited far more if the n800 were built on the same (or at least a compatible) platform.

I still see the 770 on sale at CompUSA stores.

I don't understand the rationale behind continued selling of the 770 when it is only $40 cheaper - further 770 sales only add to the ongoing support issues, and the N800 is better value for money. The 770 should be discontinued, or sold at a substantially lower price than the N800.

Nokia is probably clearing out old inventory. It is hard for me to believe that Nokia is still manufacturing the 770 with outdated parts.

I had some "connection-breakdowns" with the last OS2006 (39-14 or so). With WPA it was nearly unusable, so i reduced security to WEP. Maybe this is fixed!? Are there any better changelogs which tell more than "WLAN improved"?
