Maemo Mapper v1.4.3 Released

Download and Install Maemo Mapper v1.4.3

Phew. Long night. Just had to get this out the door before my work week started.

I fixed the WMS bug, and I added formal support for OpenStreetMap. The following URL formats can be used for OpenStreetMap:

Traditional "Mapnik"
http://tile.openstreetmap.org/%0d/%d/%d.png

Developmental "Osmarender"
http://dev.openstreetmap.org/~ojw/Ti.../%0d/%d/%d.png

A slew of other minor changes were made. Here's the complete Change Log, in case you're interested:

* Fixed bug that caused announcements to be late.
* Fixed bug with WMS repositories.
* Added native support for OpenStreetMap; made it the default repo.
* Added support for remapping all of the hardware keys. In doing so, I
removed the "Escape Key"-specific stuff in Misc. 2, and cleaned up that
tab a little bit (i.e. moved Info Font Size to Misc. [1]).
* Added Zoom In/Out buttons to the View menu.
* Added a scale.
* Added an About page with version information.
* Added a "Double Pixels" option for repositories; if enabled, maps will be
shown at a minimum of double the pixel size, for those who don't want to
squint.
* Added a "Next-able" option for repositories, which controls whether or not
the repository is selectable via the "Select Next Repository" shortcut.
* Changed "Track Mark" functionality back to old "Track Break" name.
* Added the ability to add waypoint-like "Marks" to the track. Marks are
like Track Breaks, except that you can give a description.
* Added some additional "first time running Maemo Mapper" help.
* Reorganized the track and route code.
* Modified timestamp to use GPS time if available.
* Changed old recursive-make-dir code to just use g_makdir_with_parents.
* Changed Repo Manager to support using ~ in the cache dir.

Re: Maemo Mapper v1.4 for 770/N800

HI,

Is there a way to turn a "Track" into a "Route"?

I visited my dentist today and made a track. I know a few shortcuts that a route would not provide. The next time my daughter-in-law goes to the dentist I would give her the N800.

Thank you!

Tracks and routes use the same GPX format, and they are interchangeable, so just save the track to a file, then open it as a Route.

Re: Maemo Mapper v1.4 for 770/N800

I want to upgrade my Maemo Mapper from v1.35 to the latest version to take advantage of the ever-increasing excellence of this app (THANKS!! Gnuite)
I am running Scirocco (39.14) and I understand that I'd have to upgade to Gregale

My questions are,

1) How difficult is it to upgrade the operating system?
2) Will I have to re-install all my existing apps?
2b) Is that hard to do?
3) Is Gregale known to be buggy? I've read where some folks had a hard time installing apps after upgrading to Gregale.

Thanks,
neil

Re: Maemo Mapper v1.4 for 770/N800

Hi,

I've just run a test of Mapper with my newly received GPS. Everything worked well. Great app - thanks!

What I did was download a route to my work. That route is via main roads that I normally don't take due to traffic. Therefore I tested the auto-update functionality. I set up my Treo in DUN mode and started driving along the incorrect route. Mapper was able to simultaneously keep track of my GPS, download new routes and also update the maps a couple of times. The voice announcements got out of sync once or twice but sorted out once a new route was downloaded.

cheers,
Andrew

It's easy - just download Nokia's firmware update software and follow the directions.

Yes.

The hardest part is probably just keeping track of which software packages you have installed and then tracking them down after you flash the firmware. It should be sufficient to write down the list of installed applications listed in the Application Manager. You might also want to write down which repositories you have added, too.

I haven't had any trouble personally, but it's possible. Theoretically, gregale is backward-compatible with scirocco - it's the other way around where you run into problems.

Thanks for the prompt reply, Gnuite. Since I've never flashed to a new Operating system before, please indulge this NooB a few more questions.

Once I upgrade, and re-install my apps, will I be able to import data backed up to my mmc card? For instance, I am using the gpe suite. Will I be able to import my contacts, calander, to do list, etc once I reinstall GPE? What about my Bookmarks?

Thanks,
Neil

Usually, it depends on the application. With GPE, I think it works fine, so long as you copy the /home/user/.gpe directory to your MMC card and then move it back after you re-flash.

I believe (don't quote me on this) that the Backup utility on the 770 works between scirocco and gregale, so doing a Backup before you reflash and then restoring that backup after you reflash will allow you to keep your bookmarks and other settings (including Maemo Mapper's settings).

I would back up your entire /home/user directory, though, just in case. That directory contains all of your user settings, and (theoretically) you could just copy your old /home/user directory over your new /home/user directory and get all your settings back. I wouldn't actually go that far, though, because some data formats may have changed. Just keep a backup of /home/user handy, so you can selectively try restoring settings on an application-by-application basis. It never hurts to back up files - if you break something trying to restore it, you can always re-flash and try again.

Good luck! :)

That's exactly what I did going from mistral to gregale (skipped scirocco), and it went just fine.
