I took a look at winmapper and it only downloaded zero byte files so I figured I'll ask to see if there is something different others are using.

Feature idea:

Wilderness mode.

How would it work?

Well, first you'd set up some waypoints, and then enable "wilderness mode", optionally you then plug headphones and stick one/two in your ear...

Then you start walking, and peridically MM will tell you something like "Waypoint one 20 degrees left, Waypoint one 5 degrees left" (any other ways? sound? different kind of beeps?, stereo sound (surround sound would be nice) ) and you keep walking.

Ofcourse you could customize the way it reports, how often, how verbose etc. (Waypoint two - 50 degrees left, 10km, eta 3 hours) . Perhaps you could also click some button and MM then tells you more info about other waypoints etc.

P.S Here's an interesting way to feel where North is: http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/15.04/esp_pr.html

EDIT: added a feature request to the MM garage page.

I use tracks to show subway and train lines on my maps. It's pretty useful but every track has the same color (red). Is there a way to have different colors?

Sorry, but there are only two different types of paths - your track (where you have been) and your route (where you want to go). Tracks and routes are interchangeable (meaning you can save a track and open it as a route), but that only gives you two color options.

Re: Maemo Mapper v1.4 for 770/N800

As of the past few days, the GPX driving directions and poi web service hasn't been working for me. I had just flashed my n800 to os2008, so I thought that might be the problem, but when I tried using the browser interface I got the same problem. No matter what querry I sent it claims the source or destination is invalid, even the exact same sources that it accepted this time last week.

Have others observed this as well? Perhaps Google simply changed the format of itsresponse pages causing breakage.

Hi,

I can confirm that the POI service seems broken. I tried the web
interface as well and always get an error message.

I want better POI management. Something that lists all POIs in the database or all in X radius from your view point. Also, when you click on the poi it tells you the description as well instead of just title/category. And the ability to have custom fields. It seems like it just grabs it all from a file so it should be doable..

Yep, Google changed there web pages slightly. I have fixed the problems - POI search should work again.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

That's what the "Browse POIs" dialog is for, accessible via the "POI | Browse..." menu item. If you want to list ALL POI, just leave the query blank. Or am I misinterpreting your request?

Descriptions can be arbitrarily long, which might not fit easily in the pop-up info box. If you need to view the whole description, tap-and-hold on the POI and select "POI | View/Edit...". If you really want to see the whole description when you tap on a POI, you can just put the whole description in the Label field.

Custom fields for what, specifically? I mean, I guess I could add "Address" and "Phone Number", but why not just put that information in the Label or Description? (POI are stored in a sqlite3 database, by the way.)

No nuisance - thanks for noticing! I probably would never notice when that web service breaks, since I don't use POI very much, so it helps to get reports from others.

Try it again, and let's hope the fix sticks this time. :)

Re: Maemo Mapper v1.4 for 770/N800

Hi,

Thanks for a great program. It is by far the most useful of my
tablet apps except maybe for the browser.

A few of POI related issues/suggestions though:

1. I use VE to plan a trip. You can add POI:s to a collection and
export them to gpx format which is great. When importing the file
I get a message stating that mm is unable to parse xml. When
looking into this I found out that VE generates a metadata section:

<metadata>
<name>Berlin</name>
<desc />
</metadata

When looking into the schema this seems valid. If I remove this
the import succeeds.

2. When importing the poi list, the poi list dialogue did not receive focus
properly making it impossible to select action. After pressing
a hardware key I managed to get focus and continue.

3. The ordering of the pois displayed when browsing escapes me. I would
like to order by distance, often that seems to be the case but
I have seen exceptions to this.

4. I have a very large poi db with some 36000 entries including one
category with some 10000 restaurants. When browsing the larger
categories the performance is very bad. I believe this might be
caused by mm displaying *all* entries in the category. I suggest
a possibility to specify the maximum no of entrys
to display, this would likely improve performance and often you
are not interested in the information anyway.

I'm not a c programmer and have not done any development on maemo
so it is difficult to implement this myself. I can however provide
the large poi database and volonteer to do testing if it would
be helpful.

by the way I'm using the latest version of mm (2.4.1? Dont have the
tablet at the moment) on a n810.

thanks

Mikael

When Maemo Mapper downloads a route, it doesn't save it to file - it just displays it on the screen. If you want to save it to file, use the "Save..." menu item in the "Route" menu.

Maemo Mapper should be ignoring XML elements it doesn't understand. I'll check to make sure that it is doing so.

I believe it just uses the order specified in the file, but you can change the sort order by tapping on the column names.

Good idea. I'll add a limit to the number of rows returned.

Re: Maemo Mapper v1.4 for 770/N800

thanks! just to make sure I expressed myself clearly, I would prefer:
1. sort the category by distance with the closest pois first
2. limit the number of records from that set by a configurable number
3. present the result in that order, since you typically are interested
in pois near your location

manderss99 2008-04-15 05:20

Re: Maemo Mapper v1.4 for 770/N800

Actually one more (minor) poi request, in the browse poi dialogue
all categories are displayed whether enabled or not. Since only
the enabled ones will return a result maybe the list could be
restricted to display only those categories.

I agree that would be super (my Garmin GPS worked like that, and it was very handy indeed). But I apreciate the programming could be tricky!

GNUITE! Good job!!! Very GOOD!!!
But how about converting from the old format to new one?
I have lot of maps downloaded for the old version and I don't want to load it again.
Next, some users have the very poor internet... It's silly... And it's simply for you to write a converter and little bit harder for us.

When you have no time to do it, just describe the database format. What you store in gdbm and how. Do you have ideas to migrate the maps db to sqlite?
If yes, we have to download maps again?

Do you store in gdbm a picture file as is (png\jpg)? Or you store the bitmap?

Whet you yse as the db key?

Is there a way to see a POI description? something faster than [long-tap], select POI, select view/edit.

Why not a setting option to show the name+description instead of just the name?

And while I'm requesting things, it would be cool to open the browser in the description contain an url.

Anyway, thx again for the app :D

Download your route before the trip, and save it to the tablet then you DO NOT have to have internet for its use. If you already has a route, menu>Route>Show Distance to End of Route.

Re: Maemo Mapper v1.4 for 770/N800

Weird problem here. I installed Maemo Mapper, and after toying with it for a few minutes I noticed that it was saving the maps and poi databases to the very small internal memory. Decided to switch that to /media/mmc2, but it turns out that I must set the path for each database for each repository individually! Instead, I decided to symlink .documents/Maps to /media/mmc2/MaemoMapper.
In the process of setting that up, I ended up deleting the existing maps and poi databases.

Now, when I start Maemo Mapper, an error message appears:
"Failed to open or create database:
disk or I/O error"
(And it quits)

I have deleted .maemo-mapper from my home folder, I have reverted that symlinking, I have run dpkg --purge maemo-mapper and reinstalled, I have restarted the system... NOTHING I try is restoring this situation. At this point, I am very confused. Have I bumped into a known issue? Is there a fix other than resetting the universe?

How to export maemo-mapper paths.db to gpx or kml?

I wish to export recorded tracks automatically from Maemo-Mapper (2.4.1-os2008) and place the tracks on an web page so that I could see those later on with google-maps.

This is possible to do manually, saving tracks from the mapper application (Tracks -> Save) and then converting the gpx tracks with gpsbabel to kml.

But. I wish the device to do this automatically when I connect to my home network.

With sqlplus I can get the data out, but in the format that I do not recognize.

tracks$ echo "select * from track_path;" | sqlite3 -csv paths.db | head
1,0,0,0,0
2,418612967,247747092,1216545784,5
3,418612989,247747075,1216545788,3
4,418612997,247747044,1216545790,3
5,418613009,247747016,1216545792,2

What is this format and how to convert it to gpx or kml format. Or at least, is there an easy way to convert it to lat/lon/alt format? I would prefer to use gpsbabel for the conversion.

Thanks for your help.

An example of the manually exported track. This can be really helpfull when looking at the new places.

Each row in the table contains three integers:
1. Point number (monotonically increasing counter, basically)
2. "unitx"
3. "unity"
4. Timestamp (seconds since epoch)
5. Altitude (in meters)

"unitx" and "unity" are Maemo Mapper's way of modeling latitude and longitude. Take a look at the unit2latlon macro in defines.h for the code that translates from unitx/unity to lat/lon.

Support for what? If you're talking about Maemo Mapper itself, it should work fine in Diablo (works for me, anyway). What issues are you running into? Are you using the latest version of Maemo Mapper?

Ah yes. I guess I could add it to Diablo, although there would be nothing Diablo-specific about it. We ran into the same problems with the whole bora-chinook transition. A lot of packages had to be duplicated from bora to chinook because people didn't want to have the "old" repository in their application manager.

I can respect that, and I'll see if I can get a .deb in diablo soon. Thanks for the suggestion (and clarification).

Re: Maemo Mapper v1.4 for 770/N800

Well I found an easy way to load stuff in using POI loader as well as some sites to get them (like POI-Factory). POI Loader can also see all the existing POI though it doesn't have a method for quickly identifying duplicates.

Still don't know how to get google to let me download other categories of POI though.

Though is there anyway to get color differences? Right now all my POI are purple.. so it's hard to distinguish say a resturant from a hotel.

I attached a small JAVA app that I have found useful in making my own POI's from Google searches. I changed the file extension to "zip" so I could attach it.

After downloading, change the "zip" extension back to "jar" and run it on a desktop machine that has the JAVA VM installed.

It is self explanatory. I found that if you limit the search radius to 2 or 300 miles, it captures just about everything. Edit the output in place and then save it how you like.

Re: Maemo Mapper v1.4 for 770/N800

Is there anyway to specify certain routes to take? For example, in Google Maps you can click and drag a route to change it. I ask because I take this route to go up to my gf's parents' house and I can either continue on the highway or take an alternative tunnel (bypassing traffic). I guess Google decides it's faster to go straight on the highway (I suppose it would if you had no traffic) but I want it to go thru this tunnel instead.

I've tried using gmap to gpx after changing the route using maps.google.com but importing the resulting .gpx file into maemo mapper just results in straight lines from waypoint to waypoint..
