yep intel are expensive, its not so much amazing cpu i want its just something half decent for devving (sick of 4-6hour+ compile times for android.) but i ideally need system to be pretty quiet (one i have at min is near enough silent once the hdds spin down)

Steve, do you think next week's MeeGo for N900 release would have some useful stuff for you? Both MeeGo and FroYo are using same kernel version (2.6.33).

I figure why not, since I'm not using them, and probably never will...
If you're willing to get a dual processor socket 771 motherboard (they cost ~$200 last time I checked), I have 2 (yes, two :) ) Quad Core Xeon processors, running at a speed of 2Ghz each... Forget i5's and i7's, when you can have make -j9.

I'll even throw in 4GB of FB-DIMMS... These things are cool running too... I used them with just a passive heatsink, no fans.

Re: [Android] NITDroid V2 Development Topic

quite possibly yes if we have aworkign kernel their

Re: [Android] NITDroid V2 Development Topic

AMD coolNQuiet...its a feature pretty much every single AMD CPU has now a days...and they are pretty darn quiet! Lets just say, you can most probably get a quad amd for the price of a duo Intel...so, if you're budget is tight, go for a duo/tri core amd...really good, and you can overclock the hell out of them :)

But dude, thanks again for working on this! Once i get my money, ill shove some of into your paypal :)

Re: [Android] NITDroid V2 Development Topic

yea C'n'Q is running on this sempron, this cpu is crazy though even on full load it NEVER EVER breaks ~40 degrees temps - my x2 runs at 40 idle lol

Re: [Android] NITDroid V2 Development Topic

Well it would only require like 40 people to chip in 5 dollars, or 20 to chip in 10 dollars, and if we cant find that many people you would at least be helped ALOT on the way.

I'm willing to donate! And im turning my pennies these months, I'll just ask mom if I can please have some more money to help me, heck if she would chip and by me food even one time I can easily donate 10 dollars, maybe even more! IF you can get that double quad core rig!!

Re: [Android] NITDroid V2 Development Topic

lol id happily go for said system but cheapest mobo i saw on ebay is £150

Siggen 2010-05-20 19:05

Re: [Android] NITDroid V2 Development Topic

well I hope other people as well will donate.
Ill try to spare 10 quid, if 15 people would do that, you would have your mobo! heck if 10 people would spare 10 quid you would have a double quad core system for 50 quid!

haha, how was wifi now? I see that in your 8/5/2010 update on NITdorid you have set it as working and not working.

I seme to remember that you said something about searching for SSID's did not work, what about manually entering them?

you need the right version of the linux kernel,
if that isnt' the current version the n900 uses then patch it with n900 drivers,
patch it with everything android needs,
and then theoretically it would boot.

sounds like dj_steve has already done that bit since we have it booting.

the next step then is getting the hardware to use the drivers and work? I'm still a bit confused about this part. Looks like the hardware drivers are patched to the kernel, so they should all be there already.

Is it just a matter of getting android to load the drivers properly?

Mer has you copy over the drivers from maemos /lib/firmware to Mer's. Maybe we need to do same in android so the kernel side of things will work.

MER is much more similar to Maemo than Android is to Maemo, dj_steve can answer this much better than me, but I think that wont be possible... Heck it might have been something he has already done.

Lets just hope that he can apply his findings on Android 2.1 to Android 2.2 without any unforeseen problems and really really fast when the source gets released :)

Something has been bothering me:
Someone (I can't remember who) linked to this device earlier.
It has wifi, but no GSM. How does it get to Google Apps?

This bothers me. It seems to be something Google did, and there must be a way around it.

I think it requires specialized apps from slatedroids site, not sure

wifi is more permissions issue than drivers, the driversand firmware loads up fine, just permissions on folders is dodgy and i cant work out why at min.

Stupid question, cant you just chmod every file that has to do with wifi to 755?

dj_steve 2010-05-21 08:39

Re: [Android] NITDroid V2 Development Topic

yea but since 1 is not created until wpa_supplicant starts and android promptly shuts down wpa_supplicant after scan fails its a bit hard

Flynx 2010-05-21 08:42

Re: [Android] NITDroid V2 Development Topic

gah, this is complicated. i was just reading system/etc/permissions/platform.xml
why does every process have to have its own user id?

You have the source of the binary that is creating the file? I know this would be a dirty hack, but cant you just make the same binary chmod the file after it spawns it? Than you would not even have to change the algorithm of how the file is made.

Oh, you would also have to figure out (if you dont know) what binary is creating it, but you might be able to do that with ssh and top if your lucky.
