If you guys approve this version we'll post it to the Ovi Store and make it offish (that's cool for "official" because I'm totally cool like that ;)). It's not a magic bullet (that's coming later) but it should go a long way. Please report your feedback either here or directly to peter a† instinctiv.com. Thanks!

Re: Ovi Store - Instinctiv

I've just tested the new version and I must say that it's a great improvement. This version is really fast, maybe faster than the default player, I love that you now have pause/play/previous/next buttons in every menu, and I really like (don't know if others will think alike) that when you choose a song from the songs list it goes automatically to random play.

The only thing missing for me is a solution to the scrolling for people with large music collections, maybe something akin to the ABC/CDE/FGH... from the contact list. Otherwise, just bravo, this is an exelect music player as it is now, can't wait so see the complete (but hopefully not final) version.

Well, for one, the "Random" shuffle now actually randomly shuffles, rather than a sequential play as previous...

Re: Ovi Store - Instinctiv

Hi Peter

Great work. I still see some delay in albumcovers showing up, when I scroll my albumcollection (~250 albums). Would it be possible to preload the covers in some way?
And when I choose an album, the cover doesn't show up in front of every song, but when I start playing one of the songs, the cover shows up after a short delay. How the come the albumcover doesn't 'cover' all the songs in an album immediately?

Drekkie 2010-08-31 17:18

Re: Ovi Store - Instinctiv

Can also confirm better CPU utilization than before. Instinctiv is at about 20% and pulseaudio is about 10% while playing a track.

Scrolling the Artist/Song/Album list is incredibly fast now.

Also saw the short delay in some album art being rendered but it did eventually.

Still only have the small subset of songs issue in "Play songs similar to list".

Nice progress Peter and team.

Now onto gapless playback, right? lol

Re: Ovi Store - Instinctiv

The only annoyance I'm noticing with instinctiv is that it's not picking up my entire music library, I've got a split library on the micro sd and internal memory, looks like it's only picking up one of them.

Re: Ovi Store - Instinctiv

About the NEW update....less CPU usage and it loads up the program a bit faster...(not instant but noticeably faster, as fast as the default media player). Also scroll faster!

Problem I have:

1. No cache...so every time you start the program....it reloads the arts all over again and you have to wait.
2. No other features added like landscape mode or repeat mode or ability to delete a song from playlist.

So basically, this update is just CPU improvement from what i noticed.

Thanks for the update!

This^ version works very well. For me, it's a keeper. :)

Although I've asked and I'm sure you answered in the many pages of this thread, I'm still not sure what tag it uses for cover art, where it gets it, how often it looks for it, and where it stores it when it has it...

I don't care how you do it just as long as I understand it so that I can change incorrect covers.

All my images for MP3's are embedded into the file itself but I know it doesn't use them.

All my albums are ripped to 192/WMA format and although I have an image in each album folder called cover.jpg, it doesn't use that either.

The thing is, some of my MP3 are personal recordings of bands and some of the bands were indies and cowboys (and girls) well before MP3's, digital music, and Meta tags were even imagined.

Again, it doesn't much matter to me how you do it, just as long as I can understand it in order to work with it, dig?

Is there a FAQ, WiKi, or other online document you can point me too.?

I'll invest the time to get it right as I think this is a quite stable and fast version and an excellent portrait mode, music player.

Thanks, BTW. :)

Re: Ovi Store - Instinctiv

First of all, great app and thank you!
I am especially impressed with the portrait mode and the fact that the player retrieves the album arts for my music!
I think the only thing that I am missing from the original media player, is the functionality to shuffle within the directory i am in. eg: Shuffle all songs by a certain artist.
Once again, Thank you

EDIT: Seems like the shuffle already works somehow, not entirely sure :$

Fix the reloading of albumart everytime.
Also fix that albumarts dont show for albums that contain for example " ´ " and åäö, shurely othe langues specific chars.

After that I think ist ready.

Some album covers images taked from web sucks, and some of them are not the real ones.
What's the problem using the image stored in .mediaartlocal folder or search if there's a folder.jpg (or cover.jpg or something like that) for this?

Drekkie 2010-09-01 13:53

Re: Ovi Store - Instinctiv

Not sure if this feature request is on file already, but would it be possible to mimic the Media Player's shuffle ability at the Artist level?

For example, in Media Player you can select "Artist A" and if you have multiple albums by this artist, there is a button that will shuffle tracks from Artist A's albums only (not the entire library).

This would be a low priority (way below gapless playback :D) but nice to have.

Better shuffle (and repeat) will be standard issue shortly. That said, I don't want to dash your hopes but gapless playback is at least a month away I'm guessing, unless there's another public outcry -- it's just not very high up on the todo list atm.

hey guys, can we have more public outcry over here please? :)

I probably shouldn't say this, but the fact that it's even being considered in "monthly" timeframe is still extremely encouraging considering the lack of alternatives. I don't believe we'll *ever* see it as part of a Nokia PR release, for example.

I need to send my n900 in for repairs anyway due to the dreaded USB port issue, so that will help temper my anticipation too.

Re: Ovi Store - Instinctiv

Peter, please, when you have got a smaller CD cover art, either scale it with 2xSAI, or do not scale it at all. The current naive scaling algorithm makes a total mess of those smaller images, they come out all pixellated. More about 2xSAI:

http://www.koders.com/c/fid417BB1599...9B.aspx?s=time

Hint: In spite of what some sources may claim, 2xSAI can be used not just for x2 scaling, but for arbitrary scaling as well. You will see it once you write a generalized version of the algorithm (the one in the sample is somewhat messy).

Also, in my version I have two minor annoyances to point out:

a) Instinctive doesn't seem to take aspect ratio into account, stretching all cover art. This distorts the image when art is non-square, such as older tape cover scans, artist pics, etc.

b) I noticed that (at least in playlist addition) auto-capitalize is always on in spite of me turning it off (it breaks a few things I need). Probably few notice since all keep it on, but it should be consistent.

Oh, and, about that public outcry, count me out. Gapless is good, but I'd rather see others first.

Which reminds me, I wanted to say, tested Instinctiv rather extensively against the audio patch (new pulseaudio). Noting on radar thus far, they both work as advertised, no more skips, breaks, stutters, and I seems more inclined to tolerate loads than the default media player. Bigger buffer?

I asked this before but I got no anwer.. so...

How many songs the program can identify? What´s the size of this database?

Is that possible to us to add a song to this database?

In theory the number is in the hundreds of millions. In practice (for now) we're *way* below that but we're enabling more songs by the minute. You can't manually add songs (for security/spam reasons) but we do learn from the contents of your library so in essence you are indirectly adding songs. Unfortunately, we can only learn from your library if you use our desktop app (currently available only for mac, coming soon to windows and linux).

Re: Ovi Store - Instinctiv

I tried the latest version of this today and it's so close to what I need that it hurts. There's just one small thing that needs fixing.

When I go Library->Artist and pick an artist, if they have more than one album, all the albums are in the same list. I'd like to be able to open one album at a time, so when I select an artist, if there are multiple albums, I'd like to be able to pick the one I want to listen to and open just that one. I could search by album, but I tend to think of what band I want to listen to first, then what album. I can't do this right now, while the default media player does this fine. The current system dumps all the songs into one big list, and while it is sorted by album, it's still one big list and kind of cumbersome.

Also, if features are being requested in this thread, being able to access the FM transmitter from the titlebar menu would be pretty sweet. In the default media player, there's a menu option that accesses the FM transmitter settings, the same ones that are accessed in the system settings. This isn't a must-have as I can still access these settings elsewhere but it would certainly be convenient.

Thanks for your time.

It pisses me off big time the default media player behaviour you comment, I almost never want an specific album from an artist, but all songs into one playlist...

Maybe the more Salomonic way would be to have an album selection that allows all albums to be selected with one single tap...?

Re: Ovi Store - Instinctiv

A better solution would be similar to the iPod's, up to at least the 4G (I stopped using it after that), where when you select an artist it lists the albums, but also has an option for "All Songs", letting you list or play everything by that artist.

hey, since about 1-2 weeks, instinctiv on my devise stopped working like the time before, it was closing after ~3 seconds when an opening internet connection was enabled. After reinstalling (recently with the newest version) this problem still holds on. So without an internet connection you can't upgrade album arts...

Does anyone know a solution for this?

also, many album arts from german artist are smaller, so you can see the smaller resolution of the pictures, maybe also any solution, or an setting-update from developer?

thank you, lingling

edit: why the hell do I find a solution only after posting the problem ~.~
my solution:
1.) delete instinctiv.

2.) get access to the root of the n900 (ssh...) and delete the folder /home/user/instinctiv in /home (yes... its /home/home/....)
ATTENTION: DON'T DELETE THE WRONG FOLDER!

3.) also delete the /instinctiv folder in /home/user.

4.) install the newest instinctiv version

5.) have fun

This should work, greets :)

edit 2: still downloading low resolution pictures of german artists :(

Good find!

I have been looking for the artwork for some time and there it is. :)

I wonder if this somehow slows down the whole retrieval thing and I wonder further if our members from Instinctiv are aware of this.

There is also an Instinctive folder in my N900:\home\home\user\Instinctiv\artwork but it may be a remnant from a previous installation on mine because none of it jives with what I have installed now.

Needless to say I snatched up the artwork from where you pointed in N900:\home\home\user\Instinctiv\artwork and its all good.

Later this w/e, for duty and humanity, I try to move the Instinctiv directory that you found to the directory we think it should be in, reboot the app, and see if suttin' s'plodes or suttin'.

EDIT: Well for starters I deleted the second "Home" directory and sub directories and rebooted Instinctive to see what happens...

Nothing blew up and it simply recreated that whole second "Home" directory string so it isn't a simple installer glitch. That directory location is coded into the program...

Oh well. We shall wait and see what comes next from Insinctiv.

Whatever it is, I betcha it will be good
. :)

Yea I noticed this feature was missing when I used the program yesterday. The progress that instinctiv is making is impressive. I can't wait for the next update, it should be enough to make it my default media player

today i saw there is a new version! downloaded it, and voila, there is the "identify" feature.

it works pretty good, but its really intolerant as far as metal and rock goes :D
it wasnt able to recognize mudvayne-songs, let alone cannibal corpse or cryptopsy.

with mainstream-music however, its working pretty well.
