Why don't they post such stuff on their own website too? Oh, wait...
They have more employees than my company, and still keep sucking at communication.

You guys are impatient :D
I bet we will see product announcement on MWC 2013 (25-28 February 2013). Is that soon enough for you?

don_falcone 2013-01-12 12:57

Re: Jolla Sailfish Is stunning! Now on video!

...not being impatient, just questioning their methods / platforms / content of communication.

tissot 2013-01-12 13:18

Re: Jolla Sailfish Is stunning! Now on video!

Lol, and people are already freaking out over here. Why so impatient when there's nothing to wait and at most just surprises to have. If they fail with the hardware announcement, just move on.

Have had no problems waiting for this one compared to Nokia's Maemo and MeeGo devices. Helps when you are not actually waiting for anything.

You all also might wanna remember that while you should expect stuff to happen when you talk about multinational companies with tens of thousands people working for them. We are talking about start up with 60 people. Scale it up.
Again if they manage to actual ship hardware before summer like they said once again yesterday, i will be amazed.

He was quoted about once, and there were countless examples last yr of him being; misquoted, taken out of context, or the writer simply wanting to read more into what he actually said.
Even if that really was their official line from July to Nov*, it was always ridiculously ambitious to be doing the full reveal at that point, so no, you can't use it as some kind of juvenile thing to point to constantly.

*which is extremely questionable

Golla sues Jolla over similar name

Quote:

Finnish mobile phone accessory maker Golla is suing Jolla over the use of similar name. Golla justifies this because the brand has existed 12 years and they have spent over 2 million euros at registering the brand. Golla even says that they have not closed the possibility to make mobile phones at some point . . .

Same story posted some time ago by thedead, my thoughts there:
http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php...71#post1313571
If you follow the source discussions, what they're gunning for sounds great...
But even they're not sure how truly united it could ever be in real-world terms, & whether that would even be practical/ideal.
It probably will end-up being unified on a much more superficial level, or if not, only a very small subset of components etc.

FAQ about Jolla & Sailfish OS

About Sailfish OS

How is Sailfish OS different from Android? Both are described as open source operations systems.
Quote:

Android is controlled by a single corporation and not developed in a way which would allow to contribute to the whole OS from start.
Does Sailfish support Android applications?
Quote:

Yes, via Alien Dalvik by Myriad. Many Android applications will run unmodified on Jolla devices. To benefit from Sailfish's user interface, developers have to port their applications.
Will Sailfish OS have the same menu icons as seen on the preview video? Feedback has been rather negative.
Quote:

Feedback has been clear and current video only shows a preview version and therefore not the final one.
Will MeeGo Harmattan applications run on Sailfish OS?
Quote:

No, but technically apps can be ported easily from Nokia N9.
Will Sailfish OS be available on Nokia N9?
Quote:

Not officially, but Jolla is ready to help the community in porting Sailfish to Nokia N9. The user experience won‘t be the same though as on an original Jolla devices.
Will it be possible to install applications from 3rd party sources?
Quote:

Yes.
Are we going to have haptic feedback (i.e vibration) with click sounds like used in MeeGo Harmattan?
Quote:

Yes, non-graphical feedback will be available.
Is Sailfish OS going to have a notification screen?
Quote:

Yes, there is a place for notifications which will feel quite familiar to MeeGo Harmattan users.
Will Sailfish OS have a similar standby screen like N9 which displays time and notifications?
Quote:

That feature is dependent on the display technology of the device.
Is Jolla going to provide a desktop applications, like Nokia Suite, to connect the smartphone for synchronization, updates, application management, etc.?
Quote:

Jolla will have a standard solution. Details will be published at a later moment.

About application development

When will the Sailfish SDK (software development kit) be available?
Quote:

Announced for early Q1 in 2013. Jolla is working hard on the SDK. More information here.
What application framework will be used in Sailfish OS?
Quote:

Focus on Qt & QML but also support for HTML5. At the moment Qt 4.8 (Qt 5 in future).
What about Python, Pyside and Pygame support?
Quote:

Since Sailfish is based on Mer, support will be there - otherwise easily installable.
Is Sailfish OS‘ package manager Debian or RPM based?
Quote:

RPM.
Will Sailfish have a similar security framework like Aegis (MeeGo Harmattan)?
Quote:

No Aegis.
Will chroot (operation that changes root directory for the current running processes) be supported?
Quote:

Yes.

About Jolla

Having people in your team who previously worked on Nokia N9, will you provide any updates for that phone?
Quote:

No, we can‘t do that. N9 is a Nokia product.
Will Sailfish OS exclusively run on Jolla phones?
Quote:

Sailfish OS is not exclusive. We will make devices that run Sailfish, but the operation system will be also licensable by others. ST-Ericsson for example has already announced support for Sailfish.
Do you also consider to produce tablet computers like Samsung Note or iPad?
Quote:

Initially focus is on smartphones, but Sailfish will be available to others which can create various devices.

When will Jolla launch their Sailfish phone?

Quote:

Jolla plans to start selling their first device before summer 2013. Details are yet to be announced.

In what countries will Jolla phones be available?

Quote:

Product or market availability is not announced yet.
Will your phone be available on the US market?
Quote:

Jolla's first focus on product distribution will be in Europe and Asia. US is not planned in the first stage.
Will Jolla have their own factory for the manufacturing of smartphone devices?
Quote:

No, but we have partner for that.
Does Jolla have any IPO (Initial Public Offering; corporations' shares to the public) plans?
Quote:

Jolla is exploring various funding options - stay tuned for more news.
What are current partners/friends of Jolla?
Quote:

D.Phone, DNA, ST-Ericsson, Myriad, Opera, Cyberport, Joiku, Invesdor, Tekes, Digia.

Will Jolla be present at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona in February?

Quote:

No official answer, but possible.
There are various Jolla logos (website). Which is the official one?
Quote:

That's part of the "unlike" idea. Check Jolla.com and click on the logo to comment/vote for your favourite one.

Great news for MeeGo Harmattan developer's community to migrate to Sailfish OS :
- Python/PySide to make Qt/Qt Quick softwares;
- no Aegis;
- chroot à la Maemo 5.
So, in theory, Sailfish OS will be more open for developing purposes than MeeGo Harmattan : compile and run C/C++ programs, easily run Debian/Ubuntu by chrooting.

Just hope that Jolla maintain Qt 4.8 in the future (besides Qt 5.0), because PySide is available up to Qt 4.8 (there is no release date of PySide for Qt 5.0). Doing so, many Python/PySide/Qt Quick softwares for MeeGo Harmattan could be ported to Sailfish OS.

Still, I hope there will be some kind of security framework, just not like aegis.
Actually, almost the same thing, but:
- that would show the required autorisations on install (like android)
- that would let me add my own keys.

Yes, time to come out of the closet. MWC or NEVER.

Let's hope they can release the SDK will before that. I'm more intressting in the SDK at this state and yet a other delay of the sdk would be devastating.

Or at least "thank" Stephen Elop for axing MeeGo so Jolla could exist. That would be an awkward segue.

They have quite a bit of devices looking at their site.

My first thought reading that was that it would be cool to have phablet like Sailfish phone, but then thinking more of it i'm not sure if the vanilla UI really benefits too much from a +5" screen.

That said be it anything between 3-6" screened device, more options is always good.

Re: Jolla Sailfish Is stunning! Now on video!

So Chinese OEM's are already starting to come out of the woodwork, that's great news, this was Jolla/Sailfish's main focus, maybe it's starting to pay-off.
Just 3yrs ago people where saying WTF's ZTE & Huawei, same for many other Chinese OEM's, now some of them are quickly becoming major players.

Announce i guess is the term more often used.

The device will be available before summer and i can promise you that it wont happen in Q1.

Somehow i doubt Jolla has the resources or the need for data collecting at moment like Apple, not to talk about Google that's whole business is to collect data about you and different groups.
