Re: MediaBox Media Center 0.96 with UPnP and more

The coverart is indeed pulled from the first file in the folder that has coverart, if there's no album image file in the folder. This results in wrong coverart when files from different albums are in the same folder.
Thanks for reporting this bug. I'll try to fix this in 0.96.4.

Happy to see you like the theme. Things are still to be improved about it, so I'll be there to hear you. :)

It wasn't easy, but I finally found something about MediaBox which I think is less than great. The screen is typically too cluttered, mostly (I think) because a lot of real estate is taken up by the menu on the left. When I'm looking at the list of artists or albums, for example, there isn't much room and the song names are in a small font.

Of course, this is largely an aesthetic complaint, and perhaps I'm alone in these thoughts. I'll cheerfully admit that Martin has much better taste than I do.

This is a valid point. There are surely better ways to browse the media collection. We just have to find them. :)

I don't think so. :P
I'm a software engineer, not a UI designer. Many ideas of MediaBox's UI come from its users, and this is good! :)

Yet in my opinion the aesthetics of MediaBox are almost always superb. It's probably the nicest looking piece of software on my n800.

Just a quick question to the users of MediaBox -- and more specifically those watching worldTV with it: do you have streams which simply won't play? Someone in one of the forums (I think dealing with battery life) talked about watching CNN with it -- however, every time I try, it just says "buffering" and nothing ever happens. It seems to be only the channels I want. If I look at some public station, no problem. I have made some changes to the base set of players, but would that cause a totally failure to play? (And on that note, what were the default setting for media compliance?)

That one issue aside, I love the program and probably use it more than anything else on my N800. Thanks very much!

Thor

You can restore the factory settings for the players mapping by removing the file
Code:

/home/user/.mediabox/players.mapping
while MediaBox is not running.

Some TV streams are not available 24/7 and some may be regionally limited. Maybe you can see the real cause of the problem when running MediaBox from X-Terminal with
Code:

MediaBox -vvv
This will print out the output of the mplayer backend.

Well, I like Mediabox very much and I use it very often, even at work.
I've never felt lost or mentally shocked by it, though it looks very different from what we've been used to seeing in terms of media players. :)

The only thing I would change is the music player.
I would split the "track info" view in 2 :
1 - the "browser" would remain as it is today
2 - "tracks" or whatever -> displays the tracks of the selected album
3 - "info" or "now playing"... -> info about the track being played

IMHO, it would provide enough room for track names to be read more easily. As images are better than words, you can check out the two-picture file I sent with this message.

Another thing :
I've just started to work on a plug-in, my very first time coding in Python, it will be available soon for testing. :)

Thanks, Krazybat!
Your screenshots indeed look better than the current layout. :)
I like this idea.
