Ubuntu for Phones enforces a strict, iOS-like App Cycle policy. Applications cannot run in the background like they can on Android unless they have been whitelisted to do so (e.g., as the default Music app).

Instead app developers are encouraged to use native system services, like Push Messaging and the Content/Media Hubs, to handle their traditional background functionality.

“Applications are not allowed to run in background. Our application lifecycle is strict in this respect and we only guarantee focused applications to be running.” ~ Thomas Voss, Canonical

Will this affect multitasking? Ish. Background apps are able to continue running for a short period when unfocused, but their access to the CPU, GPU or network features is not guaranteed. They will still be listed in the (slick new) App Switcher, and will instantly be brought back to life as soon as you call them up again.

Being firm about what applications can and cannot do is needed to offer a predictable and dependable battery life.

One of the things I loved showing off on Maemo and Meego Harmatten devices is how well they multitask.

Now would be perfect with first phone with ubuntu since jolla didn't released a phone. I have some money to spend...on ubuntu, tizen or jolla. Whatever comes first.

meizu mx4 pro was announced today, but no word about ubounty version.

This is quite understandable as a default system setting BUT very un-linuxish if it cannot be changed. After all, is choice not meant to be what it's all about?

Why do almost all goo down this road? It's not like that computers do that. Phones are powerful enough not to do that. Or implement an on/off flag.

But android and iOS manged to survive with this tactic so it's notnesseserly all bad even if it sucks.

Proper mobile power management seems to be a hard task. Nokia exceled at it, that's why they were able to build Linux phones with proper multitasking and without the Android wakelock stuff in the kernel.

Canonical OTOH has no experience in mobile devices, so they take the easy route. Which is no problem as most users don't know it could be any better anyway.
