Re: Maemo Mapper v1.4 for 770/N800
I want start by saying that I think Maemo Mapper is a really cool app, and I am having a lot of fun with it. However, I have also run into a few problems that I'd like to try and get sorted out.
The first problem is downloading maps - When downloading an 'area' of large size and several zoom levels, I get a question asking if I want to download X number of maps (a few thousand typically), of Y MB (a few hundred MB). Okay, no problem. After the download starts, at some random (seemingly) period of time MM crashes out (or simply dies). Any thoughts? I'd really like to be able to download a large area with the zooms that are appropriate for what I need to do before I go on a trip. Downloading maps that are just along a route is less useful to me as I often end up a long way from my intended route... Second, when adding POI's using the tap & hold, I can enter exactly one POI. Then if I want to add another using the same method, it crashes out when I hit 'okay'. This is more annoying than much else. The third problem relates to the voice announcement of waypoints - it's not working. I've installed flite... I can load a route and as I drive, I get the text box with the driving instructions, but no voice. There is a 'chime' sound when each new box of text is displayed, but nothing else. As far as what version I have - they are the ones that were included as 'installable' in the repository on my N810. The N810 is the new WiMAX version, so I suspect that it's all the latest software. The built-in GPS works well once a fix is obtained. Any help would be most appreciated. Cheers! |
Re: Maemo Mapper v1.4 for 770/N800
Excellent application, but there are some issues:
There's an option to influence the font size that is used to display the announcements. For some reason it only works for all the other popups, but NOT for the waypoint announcements. Additonally the popups for the waypoint announcement sometimes are too small to display all of the text (often cutting off the distance to go to the next waypoint or even more). Bug? Feature? Oh, and somthing i've been wondering about: OpenStreetmap also provides their data as vector maps, dont they? Would it be possible to utilize them instead of the png files (as those eat up LOTS of space). I'm aware that it probably means including a vector renderer (mapnik?) into the app. |

Tried it, didn't like it. The interface is not intuitive and i had serious problems geting it to show my position and download the maps for it.

gnuite, that remark of branitar's was about RoadMap, right ?...

Re: Maemo Mapper v1.4 for 770/N800
Hi Gnuite,
Nice app, I really like it. Thanks for the fix of flite on the last update. I have a few other questions regarding the map repository... After spending *hours* downloading maps (moving to an area, zooming, unzooming and moving along) I've got a map database of >640MB... All was fine. But now, for some reason, the map database is corrupted. So: 1. Do you have a way of repairing the database? Compact does not work - I get a message that it cannot complete the command. 2. The 'Area' download with zoom levels also does not work reliably, it chugs along merrily and then crashes out. (I suspect that's how the database got trashed to begin with) IEMapper does not seem to work for me - (0 files copied), and Winmapper does not support google terrain maps. What are my options? 3. At least three people have voiced (on a different thread) that IEMapper does not copy the files but no one has responded with anything helpful (actually, there was no response at all). Any help here would be appreciated. I don't really want to go through loading all those maps again... Thanks in advance... |

Re: Maemo Mapper v1.4 for 770/N800
I was under the impression that Nutter had a conversion from 1.X files to 2.X database...
Anyway, any ideas on the corruption of the database, and can you define 'too many maps'? Cheers |
Re: Maemo Mapper v1.4 for 770/N800
I've never been able to nail down the "too many maps" issue, so I don't really know what the limit is or might be. I suspect it could depend on how many other applications are running and whether or not you have enabled swap.
As for the corrupt database, I'm not sure if there is anything you can do besides delete it and start again. Try Googling for "gdbm corrupt" though - maybe you'll find something. |
Alternate GPX route download site
I like to make GPX files on my desktop then download them to my tablet for use by Maemo Mapper.
After grumbling that I had to screen-scrape output from gnuite.com instead of "save to file", and having to copy addresses across from Google Maps once I'd found some that worked, I've finally written my own script using the Google API and then parsing KML. It doesn't work with multiple destinations, but it will do "avoid highway" and "walk". The interactive map won't let you edit the route graphically, but you can paste in a link from a customized route on Google Maps and convert that to GPX. These limitations may be fixable with more work. http://gpx.geotags.com/ The site also works for live downloads. I was playing with multi-homing using DNS so it's currently on 2 servers. If anyone wants to clone it onto another server, or take the code and improve it, please ask. |
Re: Maemo Mapper v1.4 for 770/N800
help! i broke the relation between maps and location in my copy of maemo mapper. everything has been working wonderfully until last week. i updated the app to the latest version and used it to drive from montreal to vermont. no problem. a few days later, i downloaded and opened this link:
http://www.everytrail.com/downloadGP....gpx&name=7578 now, even though maemo mapper shows the coordinates for my gps location (montreal), it draws the gps symbol, the track, all my local pois, and any route i download on new jersey. what's worse, when i use the dpad to rotate the maps, the track, pois, etc move around ar a different rate of rotation than the maps. i've updated, deleted, and reinstalled maemo mapper to no avail. i'm using version 2.5.1 in chinook on an n800 with a bspeech bluetooth gps reciever. please help. i love maemo mapper and would like to be able to use it again without reflashing. edit: i finally figured out that somehow a map correction had been applied. i removed it and now everything's fine. |

MM and map misalignment
Hi,
I haven't been able to find again an old article about fixing google maps misalignment in MM. The problem I'm facing in short is that Google Maps at least in Beijing are quite much misaligned (hundreds of meters). This makes Google Maps totally unusable here when using GPS with MM. It's a pitty that the Google Maps repository however has the best map coverage and details. Openstreet maps, yahoo maps etc. are correctly aligned but lack needed details. Even Google satellite images are correctly aligned, but then I lack the street names etc. I can start MM, turn on the GPS, get lat/lon and know my correct location on the map. How can I then do the correction in MM for Google Maps alignment? To reproduce just open a location from Beijing in MM and switch between OSM, Google map and Google sat image without changing the location and you should see what I mean. Any help is highly appreciated. |

Unfortunately this of course doesn't solve the root cause of the problem and e.g. route functionality is still unusable in Beijing. Even if the route is "correct" for Google Street map, the map is misaligned with GPS. After the map correction, the map and GPS are aligned but route is still according to misaligned Google Map... |

To sum up, since Google also has their maps shifted, maemo mapper would need a function which also shifts the route by the same amount as your manually aligned google map... |
Re: Maemo Mapper v1.4 for 770/N800
Hello everyone,
Sorry for hijacking this thread but I've searched both on these forums and through google and I can't seem to find the answer to my question regarding maemo mapper. I'm able to get on-demand routing while driving by tethering to my cell and can download decent size maps through maemo mapper itself. Now, I want to download the map of the entire Rochester, NY region so I don't need to be logged into the net all the time. I've tried downloading the 834 meg file through maemo mapper onto a 8gig card but it seems to fail at some point along the way every time I try. The farthest I've gotten is 442 megs downloaded. I've seen some tutorials in youtube on how to use winmapper and downloaded the map of the Rochester area accordingly onto my XP desktop. What I haven't figured out to do is how to turn those downloaded google map files into .db format so that maemo mapper can read them. Is there some kind of converter for this or is it a built in function of winmapper. Either way, can some one please point me in the right direction? Thanks |
Re: Maemo Mapper v1.4 for 770/N800
MM < v2 uses directly stored maps as files and could be used with winmapper.
MM > v2 uses a database and could NOT be used with winmapper. Don't know if winmapper had updates for translating files into db for MM v2. |
Re: Maemo Mapper v1.4 for 770/N800
Thanks for the reply murphy,
I tried to download the map of the Rochester region which came out to around 700megs and as of this morning the download failed at 300meg. If not winmapper, is there any other way to download large maps other than using maemo mapper on n810. I am using Diablo with latest version of maemo mapper. |
Re: Maemo Mapper v1.4 for 770/N800
If you try to download again the same region, I think it will continue to download the remaining tiles (if not checked "overwrite").
I've no other idea. |
Re: Maemo Mapper v1.4 for 770/N800
If it can resume downloads from maemo mapper that would great. I'm going to try it when I get home. I sure hope I can resume so I don't have to redownload the 300 megs.

Re: Maemo Mapper v1.4 for 770/N800
I've tried searching but found nothing.
Maemo Mapper is brilliant, but does anyone else experience an annoying flickering from the pop-up announcements? It seems like they are progress bars set to expire instantly. Any ideas? Many thanks |
Re: Maemo Mapper v1.4 for 770/N800
There's a progress bar when you have charged a route and come closer to a route point.
|
Re: Maemo Mapper v1.4 for 770/N800
ahh, that would make sense!
Cheers, I didn't think to test it while moving. On a related note, I've had my n800 a few weeks and am amazed by the community surrounding these litttle marvels. Thanks to everyone, and I'm installing scratchbox now with some porting plans... |
Re: Maemo Mapper v1.4 for 770/N800
I cant get maemo mapper to install. :( I get conflict with application packages
hildon-application-framework-rx34 libhildonmime0(2.0.2.1) Any help would be great. Looking at buying a n95 here in a few days. |
Re: Maemo Mapper v1.4 for 770/N800

Re: Maemo Mapper v1.4 for 770/N800
Great app but having a little trouble, im in Cyprus and the default route finder source under Gunite does not recognise any routes in Cyprus. I can download maps and POI but cannot get a route to download keep getting invalid start point or destination. This worked like a charm in the UK. Any way to get around this or put in a new source for the route download.

Re: Maemo Mapper v1.4 for 770/N800
Is there any way for Maemo Mapper to support projections other than simple Mercator? I've put together a script that allows tiles from http://www.geoportail.fr to be output with sensible coordinates, but it uses a Lambert II Etendu projection (EPSG:27582). I am working on reprojection in the script, but I'm having trouble getting my head around proj.

An invert colors option would also be nice for night use, and a flip screen horizontal and/or vertical option would allow me to place the 770 on my dash and use the display as a HUD reflected off the windshield. :D Maemo Mapper is a WONDERFUL program, gnuite. Thank you so much for being willing to write such an application, and for making it available to us! :) :) |
Re: Maemo Mapper v1.4 for 770/N800
Couple of questions, and i'm sure they've been answered already, but:
1) Font size in the Display bar, how do i make it bigger? Its too small to read safely while driving. 2) How to stop the postion indicator and compass, etc from being so 'fidgety' (jumping around) when not moving. Looks like Godzilla is playing basketball with the car at every red light! 3) I prefer imperial units over metric. How do i change that in the display? In fact is there a universal setting for imperial/metric for the whole of the NIT? 4) Auto-centering. Is there a shortcut to turn this on/off? I like to scroll around the map to see whats coming up (especially when out hiking and using satellite maps), but then i have to go back through the menu to get autocentering back on. PITA. Thanks. |
Re: Maemo Mapper v1.4 for 770/N800
is the openstreemap.org functionality of Maemo Map going to be ported into the N900?
