Re: [Announce] fMMS - MMS on the N900

I tried to use fMMS today. For some reason the settings had gotten lost since I used it last time, probably because of the upgrade.
Well I put settings in, send an MMS and all is well. Second MMS won't send and today I suddenly loose my 3g connection. Even though I am connected to my my telephone companys APN I couldn't get on the net. I got access again only after I got the settings via a message from i phone company.

Nokia Seriously needs to take this freeware and integrate it completely into the OS instead of this foolishness. Remember how much heat apple got for not supporting mms nativelyin the Iphone? Nokia should wake up and fix this half baked piece of **** phone.

Mabe Nokia should just get their **** together and support a service that their customers still want?
This piece of freeware is awesome, but it will never be 100% perfect because it isn't fully integrated into the n900 and there are probably parts of the code that is closed so the developer can't make it so (I have no idea I am just a dumb user).
The benefit of MMS is that it is easy, it is quick and usually is dispayed directly on the recipients phone as a popup for instant easy access. While an email is nice it is not directly connected to the recipients phone number and thus their phone.
Many of my friends prefer NOT getting their e.mails on their phones. Mails are often work related and they use their phones for non work related purposes.

The Nokia fanboyism on these forums is sickening.

Please for the love of whatever you believe in, take your Nokia complaints somewhere else. This thread IS NOT the place to vent your anger against Nokia. Thank you.

fMMS 1.2.4 released aka "drafts! DRAFTS! FINALLY THE DRAFT!"

My fmms version 1.2.3 (N900) does not automatically updated to version 1.2.4, this new version is now available in extras-devel? Or maybe you're having some trouble in the auto update N900 (Maemo 5, 10.2010.19-1)?
Thanks, Samuel

Hello Frals,

Sent you the log earlier on and you said you there is no error. The attached image is the error I get when trying to send mms.
Is this by any way related to you removing support for wap protocol.

Someone suggested asking you about expending fMMS to support wap protocol connection, is it possible?

Thank you.

Perhaps some people don't want to synchronise their entire inbox via their mobile connection every time they wish to check for messages, certainly not to receive an MMS in the form of an email they don't know was sent. MMS is instant, universal, simpler to use and doesn't drain on the mobile connection so for a lot of people this will be cheaper too.

I've seen this a few times now, I kind of agree, it wasn't an error in the application, rather I'd messed up either the MMSC or the HTTP proxy. (I don't recall which now)

In the end it was a problem with the 'http://' - I have to use http:// on the mmsc, but just an IP address for the proxy. After I got that sorted, the screenshot you posted went away.

Re: [Announce] fMMS - MMS on the N900

Frals, thanks for the great program :) It's working allmost like I want it to, but I do have a couple small problems with it, both related to scrolling.

1. When i receive a message with a one picture and two lines of text, I can see only the top quarter of the second line, and can't scroll the message. More lines of text, or more pictures, and it scrolls perfectly with hand.

2. When I write a message, after 5 lines the screen doesn't automaticly scroll down to where the cursor goes. Makes it hard to write longer messages.

I'm using version 1.2.2, but these have been there all the time I have been using it. Would be nice if you could find some help to these, also being able to send more than one picture in one message would be super nice :)

Has anyone figured out the T-Mobile USA thumbnail issue? I've tried the user agent gconftool setting, different MMSCs, etc... fMMS worked great for a long time but since early June everything I receive is a thumbnail, out going MMS is fine, I've talked to T-Mobile more than once to no avail, I know this is really their issue but was wondering if anyone knows the right tweak/setting/whatever...

...and thanks Frals for the great work... :)

Re: [Announce] fMMS - MMS on the N900

I'm on Orange UK, I have the setting correct but I cant send or receive messages.
I could about 2 weeks ago as my girlfriend sent me some audio file and I've sent her a few photo's she's definitely received.

When I get a message I'm prompted about it, I click the message, I get the yellow bar saying 'Downloading Message' but after a few minutes it comes back saying 'Unable to retrieve message'.

When I try to send a message it gives me an error telling me to check my settings.

Any ideas?

Thanks

By thumbnail I assume you mean the MMS received is small or resized? I don't think this is an N900 or fMMS issue but a TMobile USA issue. I have experienced this with other phones including the N85 and N97 Mini.

Hi Frals,

I'm not sure if you knew about this problem. fMMS is using the roaming data counter in my N900 also when I am in my home network. I had to disable the roaming warning in the N900 config to avoid high data transfer warnings when sending and receiving MMS.

Thanks.

Hi all
I am in Japan using Softbank silver USIM.
I am quite hopeless with codes and stuff from Linux but still, like and very pleased to be using N900 (Hongkong version)
Could you please tell me how to set up fMMS (V. 1.24) to send and receive MMS via softbank.ne.jp?
I tried, the fMMS can load MMS headers, but always fail to download the whole message.
Tried polite, rude, havoc but all failed.
Tried gconftool-2 -st string /apps/fmms/useragent "New UA String" from X-Terminal too without success.

Please please please help
Thanks

Re: [Announce] fMMS - MMS on the N900

Ah crap, I performed an apt-get -f upgrade to fix an unrelated apps's libsdl-tff error and while it did fix that, it's installed Python updates that are screwing up other python apps.

Now both Fmms, Gpodder, and Panucci fail. They all report:
ImportError: No module named cairo

Can anyone suggest an apt-get method to put my python version back to normal? There's so many python runtime packages, I'm not even sure which ones to look at.

I do not get any sound alert for new MMS !

I do not get any visual alert for new MMS!

only way to know a new MMS has arrived is accidentially by opening multitasking window.

Please advise!

I'd really appreciate some help! Thanks in advance.

I installed fMMS a few weeks ago. Ever since my phone automatically connects to an MMS network instead of T-Mobile (USA). I have to go in and manually switch it over after each time my phone scans for available networks. (Annoying!) I got so fed up I uninstalled fMMS trying to resolve the issue...but it didn't work.

I already tried to go delete MMS from my Connections in Settings, and the delete button for it is grayed out.

Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks.

The MMS and T-Mobile Internet access points are exactly the same. It does not matter which one your N900 connects to. fMMS installs the MMS access point for havoc mode use, but it's harmless for using as your N900's access point.

Your device will connect to it probably because of it's auto connect settings for GPRS networks defaulting to the network name's alphabetic listing.

If you REALLY want to delete the access point, you can only do so by installing and using the fAPN application.

That's odd as my N900 often waffles between mms and t-mobile internet access points randomly and I never noticed any difference.

Maybe you could try re-installing fMMS? It's possible that the MMS access point isn't fully defined if it was created by fMMS but then had the fMMS app removed.

Or you could just use fAPN to delete the mms access point if you're not interested in MMS capability.

mms is a clone of the t-mobile internet access point.

somehow i can't recieve mms anymore. when i click on the mms message, it says it's busy downloading the mms

but after a while it says that it was unable to download the mms. The strange thing is that i've recieved mms before and it wasn't a problem, however i haven't changed any of the settings.

Maybe i installed an update, but i don't think that would be the problem.

what could be the problem? (it are only images i'm recieving).

You need to replace "New UA String" with the string one of softbanks approved devices sends, which I can't remember of the top of my head but there is a post *somewhere* on this forum with it if you search iirc.

Seems like either the database has been corrupted or your memory card, you can try the following, note that it will delete your MMS message list in the UI (messages are still present at /home/user/.fmms/mms):
rm /home/user/.fmms/mms.db
and then start fMMS, it should give you a new clear list and hopefully you can send/receive messages again. :)

i.e. no reencoding is done so dont send huge files!

Re: [Announce] fMMS - MMS on the N900

Say... a few months ago there was a question about supporting videos in fMMS. The answer then was:

actually, the encoder is build into Maemo. Try on the command line:

Quote:

$ gst-launch-0.10 filesrc location="/home/user/MyDocs/.videos/Nokia_N900.mp4" ! decodebin2 name=all \
hantromp4mux filetype=1 name=muxer ! filesink location="/home/user/MyDocs/.videos/outfile.3gp" \
all. ! queue2 use-buffering=TRUE ! videoscale ! "video/x-raw-yuv, width=(int)176,height=(int)144" ! videorate ! "video/x-raw-yuv, framerate=(fraction)15/1" ! dsph263enc ! muxer.
This is only as far as I got while experimenting for another reason, but it takes only 33 seconds on my N900 to reduce the 1min14sec promo-video from 33,4 MB to 763,8 KB. Given that things you want to send as MMS may be shorter and may be recorded in low resolution to start with this Gstreamer-thingie may be an option.

Problems: I couldn't get sound to work at all. In theory, the pipe should look like this to have both video and sound:

Quote:

gst-launch-0.10 filesrc location="/home/user/MyDocs/.videos/Nokia_N900.mp4" ! decodebin2 name=all \
hantromp4mux filetype=1 name=muxer ! filesink location="/home/user/MyDocs/.videos/outfile.3gp" \
all. ! queue2 use-buffering=TRUE ! audioconvert ! audioresample ! nokiaamrnbenc ! muxer. \
all. ! queue2 use-buffering=TRUE ! videoscale ! "video/x-raw-yuv, width=(int)176,height=(int)144" ! videorate ! "video/x-raw-yuv, framerate=(fraction)15/1" ! dsph263enc ! muxer.
Never works. Probably something with buffering and whatnot - a Maemo/GStreamer expert would have to look at it. (Maybe it's easier to set up fom within an application when you can listen to and react to Gstreamer messages).

Also, I didn't get one effects working that would make 16:9-videos appear letterboxed in a 4:3 frame (which is not what I'd want, but probably people would expect this). More experimenting needed - it does work on the desktop with different encoders.

Maybe one could further optimize the quality/size by setting parameters... I did not looked into this at all.

Does in future be possible to add more images into one mms message and send to other people?

Yes Frals I too am interested in getting this issue fixed. I can only send pics to one person at a time. Where with normal mms you can send to multiple recipients. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

And great work on this forum, and this goes to all that help out in any form.
