Swipe (push) to close is not included yet in emulator. It's a known issue on sailfishos.org.

Re: Sailfish(Jolla): Ideas/Qns & Concerns/Criticisms

I had this weird dream last night that I won a sailfish phone. It was yellow, thin and shaped like a jelly bean and felt slightly rubbery so it would not slip from your hand. Someone handed it to me and said you won and I was just staring at it going wtf?

Which makes me wonder (now that I am awake) if sailfish can be licensed out may we not see android themed sailfish phones?

You know once an image gets out XDA is going to mod the crap out of it.

Also a suggestion for their first tv commercial in China they could do something similar to this.
http://youtu.be/iGgqEKP0oPc
Where you play on the "other half" idea and have a transition from left to right..

Though it is not a good idea to have several threads about the same thing, you were doing a very good job following up and summarizing the requests.

Hopefully jalyst will at least put a link with heading in the first post to your post above. Otherwise, I am afraid, your list will be lost in this thread.

I've fallen way behind, too busy IRL, apologies for the delay...
I'll initiate what onethreepella & I discussed soon, this'll make it easier for everyone to take more responsibility in maintaining the content, instead of just 1-2 people.
Eventually we'll lock-it-down again, & leave it to just a handful of people to maintain/manage etc.

Re: Sailfish(Jolla): Ideas/Qns & Concerns/Criticisms

Samsung could buy jolla for almost no money(for them), put sailfish in three different devices, all with different size and spec. Instant success. That would be much cheaper then develop their own android copy. Now, what don't they?

Saildish in a real highend device would rock. My criticism are against jolla HW.

I haven't seen this video yet from China.
http://v.youku.com/v_show/id_XNTY3MzIyNjky.html
(^commercial plays before video)

*Shows left and right swipe on messaging cover,
*confirms again the bezel will be smaller on production device
*mentions that app store screen will be open including number of stores and include some type of social media interface to it differentiating it from other OS's approach to apps.
*side by side compare to iphone size
-
Also in another video I saw elsewhere earlier this week a jolla staff mentioned a kid mode other half to keep your kids from causing any damage to your data on the phone.

Re: Sailfish(Jolla): Ideas/Qns & Concerns/Criticisms

what I learned from above video: possible 2nd half with extra battery, camera flash, you name it...as long as 3rd party developers see cash in it it may come available.
And since even for N900 the most diverse peripheries have appeared (game grip, mugen battery etc..)
I consider this good news for our hardware keyboard.

Other bits from that video: actual screen will be larger (indeed) phone will be thinner (sigh...why.. It looks pretty outdated already.. give me IR and FM in the standard half, ok.)

Re: Sailfish(Jolla): Ideas/Qns & Concerns/Criticisms

My concern is about the application open animation. It's the same as on blackberry 10 (move to multitasking view then zoom in) and it's cumbersome, and slow. Please make the apps open immediately, even if they only show a splash screen for a few seconds. Simple transitions (zooming in from the icon, or fading/sliding in) are welcome, they give a nice touch, but the S60v5/BB10 slow and multi-step animations are really tiresome. S60 at least allowed the user to turn them off, and guess what, it felt like you overclocked the phone.

Very interesting indeed, I like the idea of several application stores.
One can imagine original applications stores and therefore no more censorship (see what happens on the Apple app store where some apps are rejected for spurious reasons).

You'll still find the old icons in the SDK. They're all in /usr/share/themes/jolla-ambient/meegotouch/icons/ on the emulator.

This is a longshot I know but:

Did people notice that jolla.com pictures etc... is stored on some amazon server?

Isn't amazon have they'r own "android store" start make me think amazon will help them with appstore and is one of the investors  ?

Loads of companies use Amazon Web Services, so that's not much of an indication by itself.

Jolla might well be intending to use Amazon Appstore as one of its stores, though. I have no idea what licensing for it is like, so I can't comment on that.

Yeah, sharing using proprietary advertising platforms like facebook, twitter and google+. But try sending a picture using bluetooth to an unpaired device... There is simply no need to pair devices when pushing files. The N9 doesn't have this requirement, but android does.

Also, the N95 could share locations as well, by transferring the geocoordinates in an open format by bluetooth, sms, e-mail. This feature seems to be gone, thanks to all the proprietary shizzle these days.

Whether you like it or not, support of the three proprietary advertising platforms is necessary for survival these days. If Jolla did not include these or use these for their campaign - you wouldn't have had the chance bitching about it - because then the Jolla Phone would never had happen. At this moment there are no alternatives.

No I have never ever sent nor received anything using bluetooth, I don't even use the radio on the N900 anymore.

well then I am sure sailfishos will do all what android does except for crap like g+ feeds(there is no api) however picassa(integrated part of g+ should work. Btw the sharing api used in sailfish also works in nemomobile AFAIK

What i personally hope for is that SailfishOS would get a function like Autodisconnect on the N900.

It will kill al your connections if idle for a certain time.

Another wannahave is a Mega plugin just like Dropbox is in the N9 intergrated.

I doubt many applications are using X directly. Most are using frameworks and libraries (Qt, EGL and etc.). So they can be rebuilt for Wayland easily.

Sure, but that's the issue. As Qt4 does not really work with Wayland, having no XWayland means no Qt4 on Sailfish.

Therefore all the Qt4 applications already running on Nemo mobile, Fremantle and Harmattan will need to be converted to Qt5 to run on Sailfish.

Another issue is Python bindings. The PySide bindings that are already available for Nemo currently do not support Qt5 at all (Sfiet Konstantin said he will look into it, so let's hope for the better :)).

The alternative PyQt Python bindings do support Qt5, but currently don't support QtQuick at all, but it hopefully will in the future. Another potential issue with PyQt is, that it is GPL only, meaning your application has to be GPL when using it. PySide is LGPL, meaning applications using it don't have to be GPL. Also unlike PySide, there are not yet any PyQt packages in Mer/Nemo.

All in all, another issue might be with backporting Sailfish stuff to Harmattan and Fremantle - unless we can get Qt5 running on them, then backports might not be possible at all. And it is unlikely many developers will want to maintain a Qt4 only version once converting they application to Qt5.

So that's my "analysis" of possible issues with Sailfish using Wayland only. :)

I don't see any issues to not support X11 it's time to move forward not backward. We have waiting to long to get rid of crappy X11 on desktop too. And as we know KDE it will take a year or so before we get rid of it on KDE desktop. So in case of embedded platforms like Sailfish and the PlasmaTablet UI its good decision too get rid of X11 now.

And about PyQT I don't get why we need two bindings anyway except maybe the GPL only fanatics. PySide is the way to go for all users. Abandon PyQT IMHO...

Btw. isn't the plan to move nemomobile to Qt5+Wayland also?

Re: Sailfish(Jolla): Ideas/Qns & Concerns/Criticisms

My guess is, that Jolla have limited resources, and they decided to let Qt 4 go since their switch to Wayland. It's up to the libraries like PySide to catch up. I think from Jolla's perspective it's a good move. They can't support legacy cases in order to move forward swifter.

As for backporting to Harmattan (and let alone to Maemo) - I see no reason for Jolla to worry about that. They have no need to support stalled historic systems. They focus on Mer as a base, and Mer is using Qt 5 with Wayland going forward (it still offers the case of Qt 4 with Xorg for those who want it, but it's Jolla's choice not to use those I guess).

jalyst 2013-07-14 16:54

Re: Sailfish(Jolla): Ideas/Qns & Concerns/Criticisms

Jolla's focus is to ensure it's as easy as possible to port apps from Freemantle/Harmattan/Elsewhere to Sailfish* via Qt5/HTML5/AlienDalvik, no more & no less.

It's up to Freemantle/Harmattan devs to decide whether or not to support their N9xx users by back-porting...
OR by getting Qt5 working nicely in Freemantle/Harmattan (if doable?) & maintaining their apps (tweaked for each UX) via it for Freemantle/Harmattan/Sailfish.

*even port many non-core/3rd-party apps themselves (they also need to focus on sourcing content, not just apps)

Re: Sailfish(Jolla): Ideas/Qns & Concerns/Criticisms

from what I seen Wayland does have plenty of legacy support, It will be able to talk to X servers and ect.
