Here he says he's not sure if he will finish the application, and says there are things about Sailfish OS he doesn't like ( Says the power management is like on Android, what do you think he meant by that?) and cannot justify the purchase of Jolla device to himself :/

Well, that's a quote from April (and March), so nothing new here (except for the power management, that has changed completely :p Now you can always ssh into the device.).

I don't think that the fundamental concept actually changed - if you leave an application running and turn of the screen it will still be frozen after a while AFAIK. They probably just fixed the WiFi wakeup, so that the device wakes up once it gets a packet over WiFi so you can connect over SSH even when it is not plugged in.

That depends entirely on the application and the way it is coded.

Re: What Applications would you like to see on Sailfish Devices?

If i did not make my statement clear before...:

ability to record phone calls... and... personal ringtones for contact/group... Don't drop phonecall to 2G when 3G is available (2G voice sound is terrible bad quality in Jolla)

And, like Manatus said before... Pinball...

N9 is still better... I hope Jolla could be the next one... Now it is kind of little tablet for me... waiting...

salyavin 2014-11-26 22:32

Re: What Applications would you like to see on Sailfish Devices?

You can record phone calls on Jolla but for now you have to take the opt-in update (I did) keeping in mind the memory issues being worked on then from openrepoes you install the call recorder. It works just great.

On personal ringtones I agree. On my N9 I have a ringtone for my wife, a different ringtone for work stuff (I am on call in IT), and a more general ringtone.

On Sailfish limitation is how commhistory stops SMS blocking: "SMS blocking is currently not possible because Sailfish's "commhistory" daemon (which receives SMSes and alerts the user about them, among other things) installs itself as a Telepathy observer instead of an approver or handler, thus making it impossible to override through the Telepathy API. (This is also why blocked voice calls will still appear in your list of recent calls.)" http://sourceforge.net/p/scumstopper/wiki/Home/ That was not the case on the N9, firewall pro blocks SMS just great as well as calls.

At least Jolla does not have Aegis like N9. Maybe Sailfish is another percent or 2 open. The community involvement through Mer and Nemo portions are nice, Nokia was developing more behind closed doors.

I find I need the android compatability (alien dalvik) as the Sailfish ecosystem is still so small compared even to Harmattan. We lose some developers because Jolla does not work in some countries and they have no paid apps option. Maybe try a bounty for apps you want on Sailfish like say porting cutetube?

I do feel it is best to support Jolla/Sailfish as Harmattan has no future being ported to other devices. Ubuntu touch does not seem to multitask well (see alternatives/Ubuntu thread). Our options seem a bit limited. Harmattan was clearly more mature.

Is there any interest in porting rtorrent to sailfish. I find it the best torrent client out there, light fast, and cli based:D

I have tried to use transmission for the last couple of days but the cli version does not want to start downloading torrents while gui version simply frozes on me:mad:

A decent forum reader.

I'm currently using Siilihai - which works - but barely. It doesn't follow the Sailfish UI, it's impossible to even post - but as far as I'm aware it's the only native option currently.

I bet this place would be even more active if we could talk in lunch breaks / during commutes ;)

Finally got some spare time on my hands and so I have decided to tackle the rtorrent issue.

What I did was, hunted down all the missing dependencies on RPMfind, using the ones prebuilt for Fedora.
Basically what I needed were 4 packages: xmlrpc-c, libsigc++20, libtorrent and rtorrent itself.

After the installation I needed a working rtorrent.rc file so I have just modified the one from my main computer and copied it to the jolla home folder.

for anyone else interested i've got a build of rtorrent on my mer OBS repository http://repo.merproject.org/obs/home:...atest_armv7hl/

so its as easy as adding the repo to your list and installing via pkcon/zypper

I didn't build it with xmlrpc as I figured people would most likely use rtorrent directly via console rather than with a web frontend

Is there somewhere more up to date application list as the list in the 1st post is misleading?

Didn't have time to go through the thread but many of the apps in the list are now available in Sailfish OS.

Why not ditch CuteTube and have the dev contribute to YTPlayer instead? No need for 2 YouTube clients when YTPlayer is already shaping up quite nicely. (nothing against multiple apps doing the same thing, but we're not mainstream here so no gazillion devs around so let's try to minimize fragmentation)

seriously? I doubt that. But would be cool if true.

Is this the one?
https://openrepos.net/content/llelectronics/webcat

Edit: no its not playing all the vids in browser not even if you select html5 it wont play it.

One thing that i like with it is that you can fast click url and not like standard browser where you have to go to tabs view first.

I remember reading something somewhere about someone (thinking about) developing a 4chan application. Anyone know what I'm talking about and/or if any development has actually taken place?

In any case, I'd definitely be interested in an application for 4chan browsing.

Re: What Applications would you like to see on Sailfish Devices?

I'd like an application that supports encrypting/decrypting files using gnupg keys. Actually, what I'd really like is password-store (aka pass) running on Sailfish, but the first option would be a reasonable workaround, for now.

Once my current work project ends and I get some free time, I may look into porting pass, but just don't have time at the moment.

There are Android apps that will do it (there's an Android version of password-store on FDroid) but there's an issue in the AlienDalvik which means that it and none of the keychain apps can import a key from a file (they can only see image files). That said, I'd prefer it to be native anyway, for no necessarily logical reason.

I looked at the dependencies of pass a couple of days ago and it depends on so much stuff (well, not that much) that isn't available in Sailfish that it really seems like more trouble than it's worth to build it yourself. It also seems to depend on xclip for whatever reason, which itself depends on X.

Yes, that's why I haven't just installed it, like I installed it on my n900. It's just a Bash script, so it would be possible to cut it down. On my n900 I removed the xclip stuff and gpg-agent stuff and just used it from the terminal when I needed to look something up, or add something.

The Android app version of it is basically a separate application that supports a sub-set of it's functionality - which is all I want really. View a password and create one. All the rest will be done on my laptop. Just something to create and decrypt a gpg encrypted file. It'll be a good learning exercise....I hope. :D

Thanks for looking though.

Yes, I used to use Keepass before I switched to pass. I want to keep pass on the laptop, etc., so I'm looking to adapt the Jolla solution to the rest of my set-up, rather than the other way round. :)
