Re: Overclock the N900?

Hi there,

I tried the 900 MHz setting with the PR1.2 kernel for a day. Everything was smooth and stable but I really did not see to much improvement. It is still responsive, has some slow points sometimes. Mine already runs mostly smooth on 600 MHz.

Just flashed back the stock kernel and instead tried lowering the sampling_rate to 150 ms and the up_threshold to 75 percent to get it switch up more quickly. We shall see :)

I am really admiring the hacking (in exactly the way the word says) and I think it is okay to test the boundaries. Although I am a little uncomfortable, when people who do not really know what they are doing recklessly overclock it to 1GHz and more. No offense meant, we are all old enough to know what we do, aren't we? Just don't whine when it breaks :)
I also think we should really be careful if people from Nokia strongly recommend not to exaggerate it. I am pretty sure they gathered lots of data when designing the product in the first place.

Best regards,
Corwin

Dear Corwin:
For sure your unit works smooth and fine at 600mhz, but you know, as we can see, there're a lot of hardware implementations when building n900.
My n900 is a crap running at 600mhz, but sexy as hell when 950 overclocked. Perhaps cheaper components here?
So you are right when you don't overclock it, and I'm right overclocking, having in mind that I assume a very short lifetime for my Lehtokia n950 (but a happy lifetime).
Regards.

EDIT: Obviously, it seems Android is a more capable platform, software-related and hardware-related, they are not so afraid about overclocking as Nokia is. When my lovely OC fries, I know what to buy. It's a shame, surely N9 lauch will be delayed... hardware upgrades in development? "When N9 will be launch?... When portrait mode for N9?..."(only joking...)

I agree this community is awesome! it's like a big family. I'm running 930 mhz for 2 days now and still got no problems at all, everything is stable.

And for that reason if they are really concerned about the whole do-not-overclock-or-your-warranty-is-void issue, they should share at least some facts from that data. Like it was said - we are grownups and some of us are techy enough to understand these facts.
When you want a kid not to do something, you don't just go and say "Don't do that", you should say "Don't do that, because ...".

And if in this case the only "because" Nokia can bring up is "the warranty is void" - then technically this is not a showstopper, but may pull back some people from doing it (certainly not the ones reading this thread :D)

To OVERCLOCK or not to ?

I don't think it's for anyone to convince others about this.

Each of us must decide for himself/herself and learn to live with that decision (or change our minds if/when we choose to).

We must understand that we all have different personalities and experiences that influence our decisions.

The important thing is to be as informed as possible and be aware of the risks involved.

I agree with you. I accept the fact that the lifetime of my n900 would be shorten, but just think about it, in 2 or 3 years from now this phone would be obsolete and we might probably upgraded to a more powerful nokia internet tablet.

So it's better to maximize the power and enjoy it for 2 or 3 years than enjoying it for 10 years with less power.

Yes Todor, we are kids, I 'm not worried about that.
Another fact: Nokia dies killing.

Ups, I was not reffering to us as kids :o I was stressing on the fact that *even* when you talk to a kid you should point out valid reasons (besides the ones we already know - like the warranty ).

the about info should still be there (I know mine was), you can simply check it by going Settings -> about
