Re: [Debian] ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian... opening e-mail attachments

I am really hoping that it will be possible to open OpenOffice e-mail attachments by clicking on them in Modest, the default e-mail application.

I have installed the truly excellent Dbus-Switchboard (all hail, O pipeline!), and set (for example) .doc to oo writer, so that opening a .doc file launches oo writer.

'Saving' a .doc file from Modest to a directory and then clicking on it works, but clicking on a .doc file as an e-mail attachment doesn't work. It launches oo writer, but generates the following oo error message:
/home/user/MyDocs/<9 digit number>/<filename>.doc does not exist
'/home/user/MyDocs' corresponds to 'Nokia N810' in OS2008 terms, but the 9-digit directory doesn't appear to exist. Presumably this is some code internal to Modest.

As an experiment, I cross-referenced .jpg files to Gimp (having defaulted 'image/jpeg' to Dbus-Switchboard). Clicking on a .jpg e-mail attachment duly starts Gimp and opens the file – so far, so good. Now, here's the interesting bit:

I create a new file-type .gob and cross-reference it to Gimp. On my Windows box, I change the extension of a .jpg file to .gob and e-mail it to myself. On the N810, I can 'save' this to a directory and click on it – and Gimp will start and open the file. BUT, if I click on the attachment, Gimp starts but reports the same error as oo writer:
Opening /home/user/MyDocs/<9 digit number>/<filename>.gob failed: No such file or directory
So the problem is not unique to oo writer – and .doc and .gob appear to be treated in the same way. However, .jpg is handed correctly to Gimp. Is it that Modest specially treats .jpg, and helpfully extracts the file and/or passes it over with a proper path; but doesn't extract .doc and .gob and/or produces a rubbish path for them?

The other case I've looked at is .pdf. This I have cross-referenced to Evince (and defaulted 'application/pdf' to Dbus-Switchboard), and this works fine – clicking on .pdf as an attachment or in a directory starts Evince and opens the file. So .pdf may be specially treated by Modest as well.

I wonder how we can disentangle this?

Re: [Debian] ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian Turbo-Charged Edition!

Also, a warning to those with not much main memory left: IceWeasel appears to do its caching to the main memory rather than the memory card. There may be a sneaky way to change this, but it's not obvious to me (does anyone else know?). I couldn't find anything in about:config, other than turning caching off altogether or maybe reducing the cache size.

Re: [Debian] ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian Turbo-Charged Edition!

armtwister: We actually have DBus-switchboard working with Easy Debian applications, including having OpenOffice open MS Word docs that are attached to Modest e-mails; the attached files are saved in the /var/tmp folder, not the /home/user/MyDocs folder.
The handler for oowriter should be
Code:

sudo debian hilda oowriter "%params%"
Please post over in the DBus-switchboard thread with any further problems.

buurmas: the cache directory for Iceweasel will be under /home/user/.mozilla, which is in the "main memory". You can start Iceweasel like so:
Code:

debbie iceweasel -P
This will open the profiles box and you can tell Iceweasel to put your profile on the SD card (/media/mmc2 or something) instead of in your home directory.

Yes, it is that. I've now seen pipeline's debugging info, and I can see where the problem is arising. I will post on Dbus-Switchboard thread. Thanks.

Hi qole, I guess my question has been missed out coz of numerous other questions, so here it is again: I'm using yours 'switch to lxde' and I'm having problem with getting battery info as it shuts down without any notifications if the battery runs out and the only way to get battery info is to logout of lxde which isn't convenient at all. So is there anyway I can get the battery info even while using Easy Debian? Thank you..

qole 2009-03-26 04:02

Re: [Debian] ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian Turbo-Charged Edition!

Jaeezzy: I didn't answer because I don't know the answer.

Anybody know a battery applet compatible with LXDE that actually works?

I know the E17 battery applet works...

Hi qole, I was wondering how actually can I compile and execute java files in Easy Debian coz when I tried I got the message, "No matching plugin was found" when I tried with jre-6u13-linux-i586.bin. thank you.

Are you sure about this, or am I possibly running a different version of Easy Debian? On my n800, Easy Debian (and all that that implies) is running fullscreen inside a Maemo window. Have you tried the Home button? It should popup the Application Switcher while simultaneously showing you your Hildon desktop and thus the battery status. And then it's just one click to get back to LXDE.

You should only have to "logout" of LXDE if you are done with it. That's part of its beauty.

qole 2009-03-30 16:22

Re: [Debian] ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian Turbo-Charged Edition!

jaeezzy is using the Easy Debian LXDE As Replacement Desktop system, which actually shuts down the Hildon desktop and replaces it with the LXDE desktop from Easy Debian.

The benefit of this is that it runs more quickly, since there is only one desktop running instead of two. One of the downsides of this is that this desktop doesn't have any way to check the battery status.

I figured as much, but then I checked what thread I was in after I posted. It just goes t' show ya... and then I have nothing.

This is FUD and we both know it. :) But here's a fact: you don't have to logout to get this information.

Threads and splitting hairs. That reminds me. Note to self: step away from the computer and get hair cut.

Qole,

This may have come up already... upon installing the latest easy-debian scripts and launching debian chroot library libuuid is reported as missing. No big deal to install it... should you add that as a dependency for installation?

Re: [Debian] ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian Turbo-Charged Edition!

I didn't realize that this library is missing... I thought it was covered by my dependencies.

I've installed easy-deb-chroot in a newly flashed tablet and I didn't see this error...

I'll add it as an explicit dependency, I guess.

Re: [Debian] ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian Turbo-Charged Edition!

Hi,

I have downloaded the easy debian image file from my N810. however, it displayed an error message of saying taht the EASY DEBIAN IMAGE FILE package appears damaged. And ask me if I like to press OK to download again or cancel to keep the file.
I tried both and didn't work. The problem is, the image file is big and it has already occupied the hard drive space and I have no ideas how I could remove it and I don't know where else I could get a clean EASY DEBIAN copy.

Anyone has any ideas ? THanks a lot.

Re: [Debian] ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian Turbo-Charged Edition!

hi,

I need help on this easy-debian image file.
i have downloaded the file either on my N810 or online. both shown me an error message of "Easy Debian Image File package appears damaged. Press OK to try downloading again or Cancel to keep the damaged file"
I have tried both twice and have no success.
I suspect it is some files in my N810 are corrupted.
But I already have the firmware updated from the Nokia site.

What should I do next to ensure I have a cleand and good copy of easy debian image file ?
where I should go to may be delete files that causes the error ?

I have already gone through file manager folder and it's hard to locate files that I want to search even I have done search files.

Linux is completely new to me and I'm not a developer at all.
Thank you very much of your help.

qole 2009-04-12 02:49

Re: [Debian] ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian Turbo-Charged Edition!

wendythepooh: I really don't know what's wrong. It should not be damaged twice in a row.

Press OK to try downloading again. This should delete the file and download it again.

Re: [Debian] ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian Turbo-Charged Edition!

i manged to find a zipped debian-final.img.ext2 file online. since the internal memory is very small. i tried remove mapdata(s) and copied it from my PC to N810. The first time I pasted the file. It said the debian.img is missing...sigh...weird. and now I tried the second time, the copy and paste is completed.
Honestly, not just filed two in a row, I have tried for two days.......
anyway, I'll see if this debian-final.img from other source works or not.

I have used Win OS for years but I don't have a single clue about Linux...man...if I could get this work, I'll buy myself a XXXXLarge TimHortons coffee for today !!!!!

wendythepooh 2009-04-12 04:12

Re: [Debian] ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian Turbo-Charged Edition!

sigh....now...I have the debian-final.img.ext2 placed in teh internal memory card MMC2 (as what I could see in the beginning). Now..when I clicked on "set debian HW keys" just to give it a try to see what applications I could use, it shows me the message of "mount failure...debian-final.img.ext2 failed to mount on loop1..."
then i see there's a file called easy-chroot used to mount and chroot into images/partitions and it's already installed on my N810.
sigh......could I return this N810 ?!?!?

Re: [Debian] ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian Turbo-Charged Edition!

hi qole,

just to let you know...since the installation was unsucessful yesterday, I eventually reinstalled the OS2008 and immediately downloaded the easy-debian from maemo.org site without installing other applications. I was a bit "anxious" when checking the file was taking sooooooooo long without any hour glass showing. But finally I see the Congratulations box.
Thanks for your previous replies anyway.
I hope I dont' have to come back to this particular topic again :)

very "unfortunate". after i have so-called successfully installed the image file, I still not able to open all debian related applications. I have the following message appears ..

Re: [Debian] ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian Turbo-Charged Edition!

Qole,

It seems that after installing Abiword the dependencies for Kasehakase get screwed up. When trying to launch it, I end up with:

Code:

/debian has a qmount already!
/media/mmc2/debian-final.img.ext2 already mounted on /debian...
Everything set up, running chroot...
Xlib:  extension "RANDR" missing on display ":0.0".
kazehakase: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/ruby/1.8/arm-linux-eabi/gtk2.so:
undefined symbol: gtk_file_system_error_quark
~ $

Yes, I know: that damm Abiword again! I don't use Kasehakase anyway so this is nothing important... is it still the case that it is dangerous to attempt doing an "apt-get upgrade" of the easy-debian image?

Re: [Debian] ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian Turbo-Charged Edition!

hi bdraws,

No...it doesn't clear up the mess after reboot. All Debian related applications I started still contain with the same messages.
I have tried all I could with my very limited understanding from this site.
I guess, for the moment, I have to live with the basic interface and functions on this N810 :( and hopefully I'll find someone to "hack" it for me.
I continuously tried with different sequences/order in downloading the applications and keep on reinstalling the OS2008 updates. Unfortunately all these just didn't work.
I don't know what else I could do anymore.

Just a heads-up, everyone.

maemobox.org, my current host, is going offline on Tuesday night, April 28th.

This will be the end of Easy Debian, unless I find another free host.

So if you want to get a last-minute copy of the Easy Debian image file, get it now!

Good news, I've set up a new server, qole.org, where I'll be hosting my files in the future.

While I'm at it, I'll freshen things up and update the image file to the new Debian Stable so you aren't swamped by 200MB of updates as soon as you try to install anything...

I'll be busy the next day or so...

Re: [Debian] ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian Turbo-Charged Edition!

UPDATE: Links now point to new files with locales fixed.

New version coming.

This is going to be a bit of a nuke dropped on people: the new updated version has OpenOffice.org 3.0, Gimp 2.6, and Epiphany browser (instead of Kazehakase).

There's a few possible serious downsides.
  • OpenOffice may be slower for some people: some have reported Ubuntu's 3.0 is quite slow.
  • Some things might be broken; I've done some testing, but I just haven't had time to fully test things.
  • I used docpurge to clear out the documents; there's no more docs and you might have serious problems setting up your Easy Debian for non-English locales. Please, someone from somewhere non-English-speaking (like a volcanic island south of Italy), try configuring the locales and tell me how it goes!

Here is the rootfs for putting in a partition:
debian-squeeze-rootfs.tar.bz2

Here is the image file:
debian-squeeze-img.tar.bz2

Please report back!

Thanks for the heads up, Stskeeps. Yet another side effect of trying to save a few megabytes. It worked so well to squeeze down the size of your Mer rootfs, I thought I'd use it on mine.

My biggest worry is still the locales; most people don't mess with upgrading my rootfs.

Re: [Debian] ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian Turbo-Charged Edition!

I just realized that I didn't give many details about the new version.

The primary difference is that I've updated the sources.list to the latest repositories. I've also added the debian-multimedia repository (where you can download an mplayer with no omapfb output and see why our maemo version is so much better) and the deblet repository.

So you should have an even bigger choice of applications to install. A vast panoply of applications. ;-)

Epiphany really is a nice browser. Not as fast as Tear, but it is fast enough, and it does Java. At least, it should, I haven't actually tested it yet. :o

Re: [Debian] ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian Turbo-Charged Edition!

News from that volcanic island amidst the Mediterranean:
as foreseen, "dpkg-reconfigure locales" does not work.

You wanna non-english locales? You gotta get them all again for a while (more than 70 megs).

Localepurge docs suggest to do the following:
Code:

apt-get -u --reinstall --fix-missing install $(dpkg -S LC_MESSAGES | cut -d: -f1 | tr ', ' '\n' | sort -u)
then you could

2:
Code:

dpkg-reconfigure locales
localepurge

...but doesn't work for me  Everything is still in English
(this might be due to apt-get telling me "couldn't configure pre-depend coreutils for dpkg, probably a dependency cycle")

I'm going to start over if my daughter leaves me the time to.

qole 2009-04-29 19:20

Re: [Debian] ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian Turbo-Charged Edition!

Oh dear.

Ernesto, please keep trying to find a way to make this work... Perhaps you need to uninstall localepurge first?

The other option is that I start again and rebuild the rootfs from the old one. I'll start that; you keep trying to salvage the mess I made with locales.

debernardis 2009-04-30 11:19

Re: [Debian] ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian Turbo-Charged Edition!

You're right in that localepurge has to be removed before all.

It's being quite annoying to make it work, and no, no joy for now. Even setting those environment variables like that:

Code:

export LC_CTYPE=it_IT@euro
export LC_MESSAGES=it_IT@euro
export LC_ALL=it_IT@euro
export LANGUAGEL=it_IT@euro
dpkg-reconfigure locales

doesn't work.

Eventually we'll succeed, but I am convinced that any solution involving the use of debian console will be tough for many, so maybe it's better to prepare a rootfs which includes all the needed locales, and insert also a shell script which allows the user to choose its locale and then install and run localepurge to free those 70M+ space.

Yeah, but we had to disable it for the time being. One possibility is to instead of deleting the files, truncating them instead to 0 bytes - feel like hacking up docpurge to do that?

Re: [Debian] ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian Turbo-Charged Edition!

I have an older version of Easy Debian installed, but I've never updated anything. Can someone post some simple steps for how to do this? The update of the actual easy-deb-chroot application is simple enough; happens automatically through application manager. What do I have to do to update the image?

Thanks!
