I had a PM request for the applet names on my desktop, so I updated my original post with links. After all, I don't want to be a prick.

I think this is a brilliant idea :). And thank you!

Just wanted to go on record here; there is an ImageMagick port for Maemo, so you needn't have the chrooting leetness of Qole, or the quad-booting 16-GB card of yours truly, to do that... But you really should do one or the other or both, it's cool. Really.

Just a warning: the maemo ImageMagick port is big. If you're running on a stock firmware, you might run out of space on your tablet.

I'm leet, even though I'm not running Diablo? :p

Omweather has 45 station of Norway. Choose nearest from you city. Or use GPS ("Enable GPS" checkbox in omweather settings) for automatically look up nearest station.

Ja!

But you'd be teh Üb3r1337z0r if you did both. Right now, I'm messing with (in parallel) enhancing the bootmenu and getting omnipresent chrooting amongst my quad of OSes... you could still be first with Diablo/Debian chrooting.

Vlad.

what part of rural did you miss?

also, norway is the land of the fjords. being on the coastline can be quite different from being deep in one of those. and the closest weather one i could find was just that...

still, it would be kinda fun if omweather could make use of yr.no xml data ;)

sadly, i dont think there is a documentation for the format in english. just yet that is. ill contact them and see if its possible to get hold of it...

here is a english description of the page:

. I guess I need to find out what an mCalendar is, and how to get one on my system, now... but that's well outside the scope of this "screenshots" thread, so...
mCalendar is a small GTK Calendar which sync with google agenda. The applet display the next event.

It s still in dev ... (extras-devel).

yep.. thanks... I did notice that I already had it on my tablet, and I have been (since discovering it!) using it regularly. Except for the (known) issue with repeat events, it's working splendidly.

Here is a screenshot showing a new home applet: Countdown Home

It is shown here semi-transparent because of the theme I am using (NuvoClear2). It will look different for other themes. Colours are customizable.

See: http://www.internettablettalk.com/fo...ad.php?t=20945

But I can't post screenshots like this in that Flickr group, since, while it is a screenshot of my N800 running Firefox 3 (Iceweasel is the Debian rename of Firefox), it isn't Maemo...

I thought IceWeasel was a separate project from FireFox. Sort of a full Internet Browser (FireFox + Thunderbird)

No, that's Seamonkey (called Iceape in Debian), the ghost of the Netscape / Mozilla suite.

Benson 2008-06-16 21:28

Re: Show off your screenshots

No, IceWeasel is a FireFox "fork" maintained by Debian. The extent of forkage is to replace the copyrighted images (and name) due to licensing issues; everything except graphics & name tracks FireFox exactly.

gary201 2008-06-16 22:25

Re: Show off your screenshots

I'm confused. What's the point of forking software if all that changes is the branding. Call me silly, but I don't see the point of it (assuming that's all that will happen with it).

qole 2008-06-16 22:30

Re: Show off your screenshots

It has nothing to do with technology. It's all politics and people ruffling up their feathers. See the Wikipedia article for a fairly sanitized retelling of the sorry tale. But I must say, even if we got nothing better out of it, the Iceweasel logo really rocks.

Benson 2008-06-16 22:33

Re: Show off your screenshots

Licensing issues. Debian takes such things very seriously, as perhaps more people should.

Agreed. I think it is the Firefox guys who take things too seriously.

Quote:

In February 2006, Mike Connor, representing the Mozilla Corporation, wrote to Debian and informed them that Mozilla did not consider the way in which Debian was using the Firefox name to be acceptable. Connor confirmed that the Mozilla Corporation was revoking the previous agreement with Debian which allowed them to use the Firefox name. Further messages from Mike Connor clarified Mozilla's current policies: "Yes, if you are shipping a browser called Firefox, we should be signing off on every deviation from what we ship."; and "If you are going to use the Firefox name, you must also use the rest of the branding."
This wasn't because the browser was any different. No, this was because Debian couldn't use the Firefox artwork due to an incompatible license.

Re: Show off your screenshots

This seems to be the whole FSF vs OSI argument again. It is these petty feuds that are killing FLOSS in the eyes of the mass market.

gary201 2008-06-17 23:02

Re: Show off your screenshots

I must agree, this seems all very petty. It's all pretty sad, because just imagine all the wasted energy building and releasing redundant copies of things for such minor things as an icon. That energy could be put to use solving the larger problems that continue to hold back Linux distros from being more widely accepted/used.

Benson 2008-06-17 23:14

Re: Show off your screenshots

Insanity, it's really nothing to do with that. Read the Wikipedia article Qole suggested?

I can't see how it's all very petty; I disagree with Mozilla's (and Joerg Schilling's, in a similar, but completely separate, matter) decision on what steps are necessary to protect their brand, though petty seems the wrong term, but Debian's actions were quite proper. (And it should not be surprising that Mozilla does not share your concern for Linux distros being more widely accepted/used; Debian probably isn't as concerned about it as you two manage to sound, but at least has some interest.)
