Re: [Announce] SMScon (control your device with SMS)

Hello,

Since this app has to do with security of the phone, I would like to sudjest the following:

If the phone is connected with bluetooth, and it looses the connection with it, to start a siren on the phone. Most people keep on their clothes the hands free, and it would be a nice idea if when they forget the phone and leave for more than 10 meters ( or less ) the bluetooth looses connection, and then it sounds an alarm on the phone.

It could be also cool if it could check the strength of bluetooth signal, and be able to configure the level.

This is also usefull to put your bluetooth hands free in your bag on a train/ ship and have an alarm if someone tries to steal it ;)

In my opinion (and only), it is a great idea for a separate application.

BTW, anyone which tested the QA criteria should feel free to vote for promotion here:
here and here. Thanks

For that, would be nice to have DBUS-interface to smscon-daemon so separate applications could control it and use it as a backend.

Has anyone worked out how to get hotmail working with smscon? I've tried both smtp ports 25 and 587 and still no joy.

Hi all,

I hope to release 0.8 in the next 2 weeks... (i'm very busy at work & private life).

This will be also be the last release for the upcoming time, maybe I will develop futher in the future... I want to use my time on other projects (non-maemo releated).

Re: [Announce] SMScon (control your device with SMS)

try 12345 as a password first to open the smscon editor and then change it as per your desire !

Re: [Announce] SMScon (control your device with SMS)

Hello,

I've not tried smscon, but I'm installing it right now. However, I noticed the versioning scheme you're using for smscon. While the following are not mandatory for maemo, I guess it would be better to consider them just to be more correct.

The versioning of debian packages is in the form XXX-Y. For example, smscon's version is 0.7-2. This means that the actual version of smscon is 0.7 and that there were two different packagings of that version. 0.7-1 was the first packaging and 0.7-2 the second.

As a rule of thumb: If you change the code of your program then modify the first part (the program's version). If you change anything under debian/, repackage it and re-upload it then change the second number.

IOW, the first number if the version that the developer keeps while the second number is the version that the packager keeps. If you're packaging someone else's program then you'd download their program (let's say version 1.2.2) and add your own versioning (1.2.2-1, 1.2.2-2, etc) whenever you modified the debian scripts.

Geia sou Stefane,

Thanks for the very detailed explanation.
I know you are are strong as a programmer; will appreciate if you check also parts of the code if you find time.

Re: [Announce] SMScon (control your device with SMS)

Hi, thanks for this excellent app. But i have a problem. When i change the sim card, i donī t receive the new number in my other cellphone. All the options tests work fine. See this part of the log file:

DAEMON INFO: reading 1 IMSI codes from "smscon_code" file
DAEMON WARNING: IMSI code has changed to "xxxxxxxxxx"
DAEMON INFO: added IMSI code (xxxxxxxxxx) to "smscon_code" file

(the Xs are numbers)

It should send the new number, not add the IMSI code.

thanks in advance for you help.

Re: [Announce] SMScon (control your device with SMS)

Hi, i havent read this thread in a while, maybe only the first post when it gets updated.

I had the unconfortable situation of being in a brookstone store the other day and sat down on those massage chairs that moves you in all the right ways. but 2 min after getting up from the chair i noticed my phone was missing, must of slipped out during the chair ride.
of coursed i panic, i told the people that were with me to call my phone, no reply, then i activated the trackon command and althoug the command was accepted, there was no gps signal in the mall.

at that moment i really wanted a command that would sound an alarm, as loud as possible, i know you could play with scripts and/or open a shell but is it feasible to include such command?

I am officialy and humbly requesting an alarm command to be executed from sms.

this could be proven very valuable when you cant find your phone, specially in a closed space with no gps.

fortunetly one of the store clercks found the phone and put it in a drawer, and after seeing my "i have lost my most valuable posesion" face as i walked in circles around the store, he ask me if i had lost my phone and gave it back.

just my 2cp

ps:sorry for the terrible english, not 1st language and im typing on the phone so no spellcheck.

Re: [Announce] SMScon (control your device with SMS)

I got a problem when I installed a new version of SMSCon. I didn't give a root pw then. When I tried to open app, I got a dialog for PW, and since I didn't give it, I don't have one. Removing and re-installing didn't reset it either. How I could reset the pw, is there a folder or file somewhere which I should e.g. delete between uninstalling and re-installing.

Thank You for Your help in advance!

High times, the apps have arrived to Extras repos!! Thanks to all testers/voters for their time, effort and comments.

As digitalvoid said, we are preparing the next version with all (read: most) requests. It should be the terminal version.

Cheers.

Hi! Just installed this awesome application. Thank you for your work.

I'm having a little issue: my phone tries to connect to GPRS every 10~15 minutes. Is this a common/default behavior or can be disabled?

Goto to "Settings" > "Internet connections" and change the "Connect
automatically" to your preferred method.

If you activate with a command once the SMSCON it will switch this
method to choose always the GPRS.

Reading the wiki will help you.

Hi, I just found this application. Thank you for your great work. Reading this thread and the description, it seems exactly what I have been looking for.

But, I got a problem, when I try to install SMSCON Editor (from Extras with the Application Manager). I allways get the message, that there is a conflict with the packages

python2.5-qt4-network (4.7.3-maemo5) and
python2.5-qt4-webkit (4.7.3-maemo5)

Can you give me some advice, what to do?

Thanks!

open the x-terminal and write:

root

apt-get install python2.5-qt4-network python2.5-qt4-webkit

then you can install smscon editor.

How about a screenshot by e-mail as well as SMS about the recent phonecall or SMSes sent from the new SIM? though the current features are more than handy.
thanks.

Proposal: automatic SMS resend to email

It would be nice if you could add one choice: send all incoming and sent SMS automatically to preset email.

This would be handy feature for archiving SMS. Email header could contain tag SMS, sender phone number and name if found in contacts, and time.

The root password you entered during the installation was for the SSH server.

The editor password is different and it is 12345. You can change it from inside the app.

It is a nice idea and many will find it useful I believe. The problem is it doesn't match the purpose of this application. It needs to be in a separate one.

you are right, separate program may be better. Just thought you propably know how to do this, and because this SMScon handles SMS anyway, so this could be little "add-on"

There was this kind of program for s60-series symbian phones, named SMS2Email, tiny handy program, i really liked it. It was so easy to find a SMS with gmail search

Re: [Announce] SMScon (control your device with SMS)

Hi,

i really like this useful program and would wished to have it on the handy which I lost a few weeks ago.
i installed it today on my n900 and i'm very happy about its fuctionality.

But i recognized some little problems when testing it today. my girlfriend sended my the 'Locate' command and got 4 sms with
"-unlock-
phone was already unlocked."
and 3 sms with the "accepted" message which i think is a bit overkill :)
luckily my prepaid card ran out of money before my n900 could send another 50 sms :D

no serious: i think this bug is maybe some problem with the sms timeout or something

in my logs appeared these message:
Code:

DAEMON ERROR: failed to send SMS to "..."
DAEMON ERROR: failed to send SMS to "..."

the user should also have the ability to deactivate the default gprs connection when a command has been received. i also didn't found any possibility to turn the "unlock" message off. is there any?

I solve that. You have to edit the smscon_daemon file (i use vi). Where is GSMmodem, change Maxretry to 1 (default 3).

Ok, my problem is:

I have 3 cellphones: my great n900, my mother's cellphone and my father's cellphone. So i decided to check the great feature of receiving the new sim number (when i change the sim card).

I set my mother number in the smscon-editor and all the test work fine. I type smscon -imsi and i see 1 imsi number (mine). Then i change the sim card (i put my father's sim) to check that great feature. But i don't receive my father's number via sms to my mother's cellphone. I type again smscon -imsi and now i see 2 imsi numbers. I type smscon -log and i see:

Thanks for the details. It makes absolutely sense now.

One question, is your father's sim able to sent SMSs from your phone?
This is they only way I could think it can fail.

Edit: also forgot to mention the retry will be after 900 seconds for this. did you wait that long?

Hi Brian_7,

When you did smscon -imsi (with your fathers card inside) you did 'learn' smscon that this card is trusted so after this when ever you insert this card in a later time again is NOT seen as a possible card from a thief.

I don't have a explanation why smscon didn't send a SMS to your mother's card the first time your fathers card was inserted (it should have). Maybe Saturn's remark has some validity...

Strange indeed, some people suffer from this behaviour, I personally have never experienced this during the development of smscon. I will look into it again, maybe I can find the explanation why this is happening. Otherwise I will simplyfy the 'retry' routine when SMS sending fails. I will rewrite/change the 'unlock' SMS sending routine...
