Re: Samsung Galaxy Note

A caveat to those using the SpeedMod kernel: in its clockworkmod recovery, internal and.external flash memory mount points are exchanged. And this is very dangerous.
Yesterday, after editing my datafs and ums partitions to give more space to apps (4GB instead than 2) I tried to format my internal flash in recovery, silly me.
And I gave the command "format /emmc" in recovery. One second after, I reminded that those mount points are inverted.... :(
But my external sdcard was already blank formatted. Everything was kaputt, including my latest nandroid backup (did I say I hadn't restored./data that far?), photos, videos, documents, firmwares...
Luckily I had a nandroid from last month, with docs backup, and part of my recent files could be found and restored with testdisk.
But it took me several hours to put it back almost as before my silly command.

So, the point of this story is: beware SpeedMod recovery and its borked mountpoints!

No the point of the story is: Always backup to a secure place!

(I mean what if you took the microSD out for whatevereason and it dropped into a hole you couldn't get it out from)

I got one too, should be here within a week.
It's $649 on Kogan.

By here, I mean to my older bro for his bday. I wont be upgrading now.
At least not until they get even cheaper, or something

Note 2 is insanely fast. No problem in rooting and transferring apps through Titanium backup. Only nuisance, I had to cut my sim card into a microsim.
Why I am here, go try 'naked browser'. It's ugly but fast and responsive.

Congratulations on your purchase! How do you like multi-windows? Any problems running linux on android?

Still holding out to see what US carriers offer...

Multi windows isn't available yet. Where did you buy it?

Re: Samsung Galaxy Note

There is an OTA that's been out for a couple days/week and it brings or activates the Multi-Window function.

However the ROM itself is about 1GB large. About 4 times larger than stock Android, or double the size of other OEM ROMs. Its like, what the hell was stuffed inside it?!!?

just an update - some of the guys at xda have been experimenting with editing an xml file to put new apps into the split window function and some posted screenshots of non stock rom multi screen apps working.

so its possible to put new apps in, but how well it works in split screen may vary from app to app.

Free RAM is a pointless thing to ask.
Android works exactly like desktop Linux in this regard, it stuff the system files (OS) into the RAM, then it decides how much to leave free, then it calculates how much spare it has, then it stuffs that with the things that are used most often.

So if you have 1GB RAM, and the OS consumes about 200MB, and you've elected to leave 100MBs free. Android will calculate that it has 700MB of free RAM. Then it will look at all your Apps. Lets say the total of your Apps is 1.5GB, well Android will take the first 700MB of Apps... ones that are used most often.

You'll have roughly 100MB of free RAM... but when you are doing normal things (OS-bound) things will be snappy. When you use your apps, most often, it will pop right open because its right there ready to be accessed inside the RAM. When you click on a function or App that is seldom used... the OS will have to pull that out from your SSD/NAND or the microSD-slot (basically wherever it resides). And there will be slow delay as the OS kills off certain things in the RAM and attemots to load the function/app into the RAM.

Its a basic concept, and it works wonderfully.

concerning Linux, I had to edit the boot script because mount points are different from expected. It's faster than Note1 (d'oh!).
Multi windows is potentially useful but I haven't used it yet. ..
I am quite used to switching back and forth between apps with TaskSwitcher...

Got my Note II today. Proud owner.

I put my old micro SD card in - and noticed a lot of my photo folders do not appear in the gallery but did show up on my S3.

Any clues peeps?

Major find! As an indication of how well it works can you try something like angrybirds in one view and youtube (or some others, like an editor, maybe linux on android etc...) in the other window.

Also, in regards to my question concerning RAM and ROM I just want to know how much RAM is used up by the OS?

Paranoid Android rom, yesterday's nightly with phablet mode and 201dpi is a joy to use. Much prettier and IMO more usable than the stock one.

Re: Samsung Galaxy Note

I was wondering whether android/GN2 is a viable platform for my needs. Can android users please respond to the following questions:

1. Does android have a openvpn client for routing everything over the remote server?
2. Does android/GN2 have native sip support?
3. Can the sip clients use openvpn as well?
4. Is there a good irc client something like xchat on N900? How is the usability with on screen keyboard.
5. Can it play streaming ogg music (i have my own icecast server)
6. Does it have an openssh server.

Ok, i finally bought GN2 and here are my answers to the questions above:

1. On the play store there is an openvpn client and works quite well even on non-rooted phone. However, only 'tun' interface is supported.
2. There is a very poor 'native' sip support in the dialer. However, there is an application call Csipsimple which is awesome and even supports SRTP/ZRTP. Sip calls are choppiness free unlike N900 (see my signature below).
3. Yes, CSipsimple routes the calls over openvpn.
4. There are some irc clients available, but not as good as xchat. The onscreen keyboard is no match to N900's hardware keyboard. There is a usable keyboard called 'Hackers Keyboard' on google play which provides the full keyboard.
5. This is pathetic on Android. The standard media player cannot even play network streams!. There is a paid application on google play store called xiialive which can play custom icecast urls.
6. Dropbear is available on a rooted device. There is busybox as well available. But out of the box the shell is very poor.

Alternatives for terminal:

Better Terminal Emulator Pro
Download: https://market.android.com/details?i....bettertermpro

VX ConnectBot

Try VX first

Hi. Although the price has gone up since I got it, you might consider airterm which can make multiple floating terminals, has ssh and a version of busybox for non rooted devices.

@rajil.s

Have you considered the *****X IRC client? It is a nicely full featured CLI IRC client that is an OSS staple for many. It is available via 'Terminal IDE' which is a terminal and command line apps (which include busy-box, a bunch of CLI compile tools, etc)..:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...x.spartacuside

More info on *****X here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/*****X

... oh, and I totally agree with deb in his recommendation of VX ConnectBot. It works impeccably well, has tons of features, and has great support for external keyboards (something that is oddly lacking in other clients). It's a great tool for local and remote CLI.

Unfortunately the forum censor has killed the link and all references to the IRC client you recommended.

I'm curious as to what it is because I couldn't think of the 5 letter word that could precede X.

The forum censor's a b*tch, isn't it? ;)

Also, I wonder why you'd want to use a terminal IRC client on a fully-touchscreen device. Man, if messing with conf files in vi on Connectbot was painful...

I'd recommend AndChat for IRC on Android.

Doh!

The client is a popular console app by the name of b-i-t-c-h-x (without the dashes). I don't use IRC, so I'm going on the testimony of others.

Has anybody successfully mounted N900 as a storage device on android?

I would like to use N900 as a storage medium. I connected the N900 to Note2 using an otg cable. The android phone only sees N900 UMS once i stop the charging using 'stop bme'. Although the Note2 phone does see the UMS but i get a "Damaged usb storage" notification.

The N900 is running stock kernel with stable CSSU while the Note2 is running stock kernel/rom.

I'm the less expert on this planet but I think android just see fat filesystem drive with usb otg... People more expert could confirm or correct me. Just my 2 cents.

Yeah, bad news. It seems that every android update comes with an annoying bug as the super-brick bug that came with android ICS 4.0.

Besides, this exploit seems to be the reason behind postponing the release of the android jelly bean 4.1 for the s2 and the original note gtn7000 till 2013 : http://www.phonearena.com/news/Andro...l-2013_id37806

Re: Samsung Galaxy Note

Samsung confirmed Jelly bean update(which is a promising update) for the original galaxy note. They included a silly typo as well. They said "project buffer " instead of "project butter":). The only missing thing is that they didn't state the update date.
I've bean eagerly waiting for this update because of its project butter, air view, multi window and other note 2 features.

There have already been several "leaked" Samsung JB ROMs for the GNote (4.1.1 and 4.1.2) making the rounds, but it seems all of them were still less than mature (bugs and battery life etc.).

If Samsung manages to come up with a couple more excuses like this one, the GNote III will be out before the upgrade :-)
