In theory it shouldn't matter, as far as I am aware, since the actual electronic contact area remains the same. But can anyone report success with cutting down such a mini SIM for the N9 (rather than examples of success for the iPhone)? I ask because my current mini SIM is of the large format

I am on vacation in the Philippines. I went and bought a sim card from slow arse suntel so I could put it into my N9. They said they don't sell Micro sims for prepaid accounts so I got the card anyways and went upstairs to another place to have them cut it for me using one of those sim card cutters you can get off of amazon or ebay.
After they cut it I tried it and it did not work so i flipped it over and laid it side by side against a globe micro sim that does work in my N9.

You can see the top part is unneeded and so I just cut it off flipped it over and cut it at the end to match the shape of the rest of it and inserted the two pieces into the N9 micro sim tray and it works now

You need to take a knife and scrape along the edges and also along the back side to thin it out and get rid of the burs just to let you know.

Seems like a useable bug for hearing the fmradio from the phone with headphones as antenna;)

Re: N9 owners: answer questions & get help!

Hello all,

I initially posted a few questions on this site and that was many days ago and I was sad to see no attempt at getting an answer. I had an iPhone 4s and was considering getting the N9 but was concerned about the bluetooth capabilities in regards to a porsche in car communications set up.

Well I pulled the trigger. I bought the N9 and my plan was to use it a couple days and then either return my 4S and stay contract free or sell the N9 on ebay. Well I went as far as putting the N9 on ebay and got many offers but in the end I could not part with the Nokia. The reasons for hesitation were due to the N9 NOT being as smooth as the 4S. The camera is on the N9 is not nearly as good as on the 4S and the browsing is also not as good BUT the N9 has class. It offers a sophistication that simply can't be had by a mass market device such as iPhone. I love typing on it, the feel is so uniques and nothing like I have ever had before in a mobile phone.

For anyone that cares the bluetooth DOES support phonebook transfer. Now that I have this great piece I have a few question that I hope can be answered. For onething I notice a great deal of lag in having the ability to enter text into a return message. What I am saying is that its sometimes takes a while to get the phone to respond to bring up the keyboard. Other than that I love the phone. I really like the ringtones and alerts but is there a way to get more alerts and more ringtones? I am not into musical ones.

Also I wish the phone had different alert tones for different contacts. I also wish it had bookmarks. And one more thing, the volume on the speaker phone sucks. Having come from the iPhone 4S I can say that the phone is actually pretty quick as pages load fast and I get better service compared to the 4S. I also am curious as to how to use the forward camera and wish there was a way to get the indicator light to do more. Like maybe breathe or blink with different colors for different events? Or maybe have an option to use just the indicator and shut down the time? Just an idea.

All in all I am very happy and will be returning the 4s on Sunday. For your reference I am in Chicago with a black 16gb N9.

when editing a contact, one of the bottom options is to set a custom ringtone for him.

the phone is also going to get an update soon, and it should fix quite a lot of issues, so hopefully tha will also improve the rare laggyness.

I know about the ringtone per contact but it would also be cool to have a text message alert per contact. Also.. when the update comes how will I know and how will I be able to apply it?

Re: N9 owners: answer questions & get help!

I've just received a popup: Battery Draining Detected. Average idle drain was 20mA, now 43mA.

Uh-oh! :(

I enabled Developer Mode so I could use the terminal - I think I read somewhere that the SSH server which it silently starts might be the cause? I probably don't need SSH server most of the time, so I'd rather have it as a manual start. I've disabled Developer Mode again for now to see if the idle consumption goes back down.

Also: anyone else experiencing frequent music stuttering or just full-on stop/start when opening/closing other apps, particularly the built in facebook client (which I'm finding distinctly underwhelming given that I'm used to just using facebook.com on the N900 which was slow but fully featured).

I'd have thought that Audio Playback service(s) would already be prioritised/nice'd appropriately. Anyone know more?

You receive few answers because few people have the N9 yet, but your findings are very welcome!
Some bugs/missing features will be fixed in the next month or so, but don't know specifically. You can tell what you don't like to Nokia Care :)
Also I think that you can bookmark pages as applications (but folder will only come in PR1.2)

Yes it works fine.

Open the "drive" application
press the right button (three bars) for options
press "settings"
press "navigation voice"
there you get the option to download new.

There are many languages and for some there are male and female voices.

Re: N9 owners: answer questions & get help!

I ran my N9 for 9 days, 4 hours and some number of minutes (information courtesy of the Battery Usage app). From time to time there was some lag, particularly starting applications.

A lot of email (3 accounts), multiple calendar sync (with CalDAV), SMS, RSS and Facebook feeds to the notification screen, maps, web browsing, music (using FLAC as the encoding format), video (mostly downloaded using CuteTube), the above mentioned Battery Usage app running all the time, oh yeah - and some phone calls. WiFi, Bluetooth on always. Usually a half dozen apps running all the time (clock, calendar, battery usage among others).

Finally it seemed like it just got gummed up (how's that for a technical term?) so I shut it down and restarted (probably only the third restart in the time I've had it.) Smooth as glass again.

As yet I haven't turned Developer Mode on.

I'm not in the habit of rebooting my phone often - I used to let the N900 run for a l-o-n-g time. Anyone else seen anything like this?

I have had similar experiences, seems that some program is leaking memory or something. I close all programs once per day, which seem to keep the phone responsive. I have also adopted a habit of closing most third party apps and web browser windows after I use them. First software version of N900 was quite the same, the rough edges were fixed in later updates.

I believe so. Can't remember where I saw it. I'd suggest going to meego.com and looking in the handset forum. IIRC, there was definitely something on Ovi though I can't remember if it was Symbian or Meego (was looking for stuff for my old 5800 before.)

Has anybody tried to update maps in N9 and succeeded in it? I was trying to remove unnecessary Nordic & Baltic maps from my N9, but could not first find any way to do it. Then I noticed that map update can/will remove those maps which are not updated, which was fine by me.

However, the update does not work so well:
-Upload does not seem to be able to activate WLAN properly and does not start before I have activated WLAN manually first.
-Uploading Finnish map (~160MB) takes around 30-60mins over WLAN (yes, my WLAN & ADSL behind it are working fine ).
-After the upload is complete, map installation starts but quite soon goes to "Paused" state by itself and stays there forever. After that only canceling the update helps.

Yes I was successful to upload new maps. I deleted all the maps which was on my all from Asia and downloaded the maps for Us all, which was about 1.7GB and it all worked fine.

Re: N9 owners: answer questions & get help!

I have tasks, two calendars, contacts, and email synced between MacBook Air and N9. I use Google for contacts and two calendars, but it is famously hard to get Google tasks synced, so I don't use it for tasks. Instead I use a plugin for the Mac to sync my tasks (in iCal) to Todoodle and Nuevasync syncs my tasks from Todoodle to the N9. Meanwhile Nuevasync also syncs the Contacts from Google and one of the Calendars from Google - it has to sync the same calendar that has the tasks in my Macbook, otherwise I won't get the tasks from Todoodle. The other calendar is on a different Google account, and I use CalDav in the N9 to sync that. That way the two calendars are preserved as two separate calendars in the N9 (hooray! never could do that with the N900). However I do NOT use Nuevasync for email sync, even though it would be nice to have push email. The email account has a lot of folders in it and, like with the N900, it is not possible to only sync a subset of folders with Exchange in the N9. Trying to do so resulted in a 14 hour sync and it still hadn't finished, and lots of messed up stuff (the Exchange client is still quite buggy). So I just sync the email using the native N9 email client, so there's no push email, unfortunately. Nuevasync does have a solution to prevent any folders under a certain specially-named folder getting synced as a workaround, and implementing that -- if you have a lot of folders -- you could also get push email, too.

Re: N9 owners: answer questions & get help!

okay... after a week, I have quite a few questions.

Drive will not open for me. Just sits there. Maps works just fine though. Pertaining maps, what I've noticed though is that I cannot manage maps by removing them, I have to update a map and the unchecked ones are deleted. That's an odd way to manage them, but I was able to finally delete the ones in countries I'd never utilize. So what should I expect when I hit Drive? Why is it just sitting there on the green drive icon screen and doing nothing else?

Contacts... having to set up a MfE account, then syncing that way was just plain odd. Once I had done so, got my contacts, they're mashed up with my Skype buddies, GTalk buddies and honestly I liked how Android handled that - show only contacts that have phone numbers. There has to be a better way to handle this - I have too many contacts!

Twitter - there's no way to go from photo to Twitter? I have to e-mail it to myself, or share it on Flickr, then link to it? I've read plenty of people saying that this isn't a feature yet, but there has to be a better way.

Facebook... I just wanna uninstall it. I'll never use Facebook. Went through Application Manager, tried to uninstall it. Wasn't allowed. If I remove it otherwise, would I break something?

Google+... tell me there's a plan or app that integrates as nicely as Twitter and AP news. Also, same thing for GoogleVoice. QGVDial is "okay" but it is not what I'm looking for at all.

AccuWeather... any way to make this always know where I'm at? Also, how do I delete somewhere? It's nice to know what the temp is in Helsinki, but I'm halfway around the globe.

Twitter... how do I trigger an avi update for this app? Some of the Twitter avatars have updated, whereas Twitter hasn't. And is there a way to only show mentions and direct messages in the notifications pane?

Sketching tools... there has to be one great one like Adobe Ideas.

IM integration - am I missing this somewhere? I know I have Skype, Gtalk - which, I've been trying to get everybody on anyway - but there's a few people that still use AIM or MSN... even Yahoo.

On second thought, good riddance.

So where's Evince, FBReader, Xournal and the like?

It should, after some seconds (less than 10) open up a map in your location. Something seems to be wrong in your device. You might want to try opening it in terminal to see if there's some error output.

If you're using the Phone application, it will only show contacts that can be called. Although there too it will show also contacts that can be called via GTalk and Skype. I guess it would be nice if the phone application header was clickable like in some other apps, and you could choose to filter the listing like you wished.

Does Google+ even have a public API yet? In any case I'm pretty sure that will be up to 3rd party developers if it's going to come. Let's call it an opportunity for some aspiring developer :).

Quote:

In a newer version of AccuWeather there is in the Location dialog "Use current Location". Don't know if it updates itself automatically or if you have to manually choose it each time you change place.

Edit "/home/user/.config/AccuWeather, Inc./awxapp.conf"

Good riddance is what I'd suggest also. However, if you're feeling adventurous, you could use a Jabber/XMPP gateway to those services. There is no UI for XMPP account, but you can add XMPP account using "mc-tool" from command-line.

Yes, but it's a read/only API at the moment. This would, at least, have the potential for integration with the notifications view, but not much else.

I rather suspect it will have to be a 3rd party plugin.

I've done the connections trick - wifi, AT&T, or none... no dice.

How to troubleshoot via terminal is my last choice it seems. Great.

Sorry, the additional calendars, under "Other Calendars" in Google don't show up on my phone (I just subscribed to US Holidays & Jewish Holidays - and they aren't in my CalDAV list). :(

Nor can I find any way in Google Calendar to make it show up.

It's nice to hear you say nice words of N9. I have also used many different mobile systems, no iPhone but iPad also s40, symbian, android, maemo and older communicators. I also find N9 to be best I have ever used. I have found few bugs and missing features, but I beleve most will be fixed in pr1.1 in next month and pr1.2 is on its way next spring with more new features.

I beleve there will be successor for N9, but Nokia can not call it meego. And because of new strategy of not saying anything about new products nokia is not revealing anything yet. N9 was the last phone they announced too early.;)
