For me it would be a working video call enabled Skype App.

I already videocalled with Skype once. I had a wifi connection and I made a video call with someone on an iPad with my N900. The quality of the front camera really sucks, but it worked nonetheless. I didn't do any configuration or anything.
This was with a wifi connection, both of us where on the same network.

The main aim is to have a fully functional single conversations feature. You might think it's not much, but by fully functional I mean having those single conversation built on top of an almost complete core of the app. So we'd have notifications, settings interface, chat logging, connection monitoring, delivery statuses, presence updates, contacts management and others.

Having those things stuff built correctly and tested would allow most of the focus afterwards to be directly on more chat-related features (group chats, sending media..etc).

It sounds like nothing on paper, but when coding I know it's a pain in the ***. Thank you for your continued efforts tgalal, I look forward to your release of whatsapp.

Re: [WIP] Porting Whatsapp to Meego/Maemo (N9, N900)

The version you are going to release differs much from the video showed? Because it seems that message deliver status doesn't work on the video (all red dots), may be i get it wrong, but...
Also, i want to know more about the UI, it's QML-based? I know you are mainly a Phyton coder, but want to know if you have expertize in other programming languages / toolkits.
Can you please add a list of supported / non supported & TODO / WIP features? may be opening a new thread once the first beta arrives?
What about notifications in LPS (low power screen), are supported?
Thanks a lot and expect a donation ;-)

Yeah delivery status in the video didn't work. But now it works. Wazapp is in python (with PySide) and QML. When first beta is out I will setup an online bugtracker. I'm not sure about LPS as for some reason I can't get the main standby screen to show on N950 (not supported maybe?), but definitely it would be on Todo list ;)

Hi tgalal, great that you're online and thanks for making wazapp for the N9. Quick question about the notifications, will they come up even if the app itself is closed?

Thanks

Thanks

If you close the app it remains running in background. So when you receive a new message a notification appears, which when clicked re-shows the app.

You make some valid points, especially the legal issue is something I also thought about after I finished the icon. Because of that I created an alternative icon (long ago), where i flipped the bubble (not because of the logical reading direction, I'm not that comic reading guy), fully filled the form and inversed and also enlarged the telephone glyph.

About the peak of the bubble: Yeah, it's to close to the edge, but if you shift the bubble more to the right it's no longer centered and that would look weird (though it's already not completely centered but it's hard to notice).

The reason why I didn't (and won't) create a complete redesigned icon is because I'm acutally not a designer, I just composed some elements which were alread there because I happen to know how to use Illustrator and have some basic design knowledge.

So if tgalal cares about the icon this would be my altered version:

@tgalal

I wanted to sum up on the "thank you" stream on this very nice *development* thread.

As you will probably we aware of, mostly every N9 user will download your app on May 1st. I have been always very curious on how many N9's are out there (I am sure I am not the only one), and this information is hard to get from Nokia, so...

..so my question is: are you planning to count downloads? It would be very nice to see that number published on this forum.

Thank you very much for your work, it is really appreciated.
Āl.

Yeah I will be counting, so I'd appreciate if downloads are to be made only from the website (wazapp.im) when I put the link up :)

Hehe I hope the website won't be completely down that day because of too many simultaneous downloads ;)

In case of legal issues i think its kinda 50/50. It's not a clone but still very close.
I kno of cases with less similarity in work of designers/companies who
got sued and lost upon court. Theres a risk but not so much like b4, so its up to you guys.

I kno it's almost centred. Well you could try to make the bubble a bit smaller.
Mayb better to try to make the peak smaller. A more drastic way would be not to use a circle form.

So Tgalal.

How is the app doing with battery power? If this app uses push notifications can we expect a good battery life?

dcastrog 2012-04-27 22:06

Re: [WIP] Porting Whatsapp to Meego/Maemo (N9, N900)

BTW the new app ICON shown in the first post of this page looks way better than the original. It will give the Nokia N9 its own uniqueness, the way it was intended to be in the first place. Id choose it over the generic one any day!

Please consider it Tgalal!

@The Best Isaac, just a suggestion..why don't we put the bubble tip on all of the four corners of the squircle...since (I think) that is what really is the core of WhatsApp- is to have a multiple conversations in one go.:D

Yes, the similarity is still there. But the same goes to the app name "Wazapp": It's not the original name but if you know the original WhatsApp messenger you'll know that it was the reference for this app.

I've included the Illustrator source file in the zip package, so feel free to design a new icon and post it here. But of course it's up to tgalal to decide which icon he'll include.

We'll, nice idea in theory, but i don't think this will work because people wouldn't recognize it as a bubble anymore. ;)

Hey Tgalal and thanx a million for the Good work,

1) What's going to happen if someone sends us Media files since it's not yet supported?

2) Is Whatapp paid for, if so how will this payment be made to them since the N9 version is not produced by them?

3) Also, when you check in Whatsapp Webside, they saying it's a hoax that they'll be charging for this App, but Wikipedia has the following :
Quote:

Android, Windows Phone, Blackberry, Symbian and Nokia S40 users can use the app 1 year for free, whereafter they have to pay US$1.99 (or local equivalent) per year. iPhone users can buy the app for a one-off fee of US$0.99 (or local equivalent) although the app is occasionally free for limited periods
. What's the truth here?

Re: [WIP] Porting Whatsapp to Meego/Maemo (N9, N900)

The app is free but the service isn't. After a year you'll have to pay $2/year.

You are right. As the N950 does not have an AMOLED display, it cannot have the LPS, because that would consume just as much battery as having the display fully activated. So, the LPS does only exist on the N9.

Thank you for your great work!

I think it is not so good.Because there should be four rounded corners for all app icons.
