ST-Ericsson brings PC speeds to mobile devices: First 3GHz smartphone prototype demo at Mobile World Congress

Quote:

In addition to speed and multiband support, the NovaThor L8580 consumes 35% less power than rival architectures at comparable high frequencies. And last but not least, the L8580’s ground breaking 0.6V low power mode consumes 50% less power at 1GHz redefining the active standby experience for users of mobile devices while adding hours of battery life,” continued Lamouche. “All of these factors highlight the innovation and product differentiation that ST-Ericsson can now deliver to its customers.

0.6V at 1GHz? This sounds too good to be true for the whole SoC.
If they do reach even 0.7V Vcc at 1GHz for the whole SoC at 50% load I'll eat my hat.

At that voltage range, 2GHz is a reality on 1.0V. Imagine an A15@2GHz on a phone.

I have no clue what you talking about. I demand an image!

Image or lie...especially that part with the hat.

Re: Jolla Sailfish Is stunning! Now on video!

Sounds way too fanciful, we need to see some real/bench-able devices using it, I doubt it'll end-up being competitive with Qualcomm SoCs coming, let alone blow them out of the water.
Aside from that, I still hold to the contention that Jolla won't be using this, if they do use STE it'll be the U8500, or the model just below the L8580...

So they added "kill swipe" Top to bottom :P.
And from the Home you will acces to the Apps (multitasking screen?)

^^or is it only the running app (one app)? So, it is still only max 9 app multitasking?

There is some new information available (in Finnish). Finnish financial magazine Taloussanomat reports that Marc Dillon has confirmed that Jolla aims to have their first phone available in Finland for the Christmas an in China for the Chinese New Year. Jolla will also announce new information about the device soon, hopefully during March-April. They aim to announce the phone early to ensure that they have enough time to concentrate to logistics and other distribution related stuff.

Price of the device will not be the highest among smartphones (reporter speculates about 400€) but the phone will still be highend.

What happend with the SUuUmMMer? When is Chinese new year? During summer?

Where did jolla confirmed this? Have they totally lost their minds? If that is true they have totally lost the credibility!

Sigh... what a joke... Jolla, Jolla, Jolla....
I also suspected they were going to shift the goal posts on it being a "truly premium device", to one that's "kinda high-end".
Partly because they're probably using something quite mediocre like the U8500, or the next model up at best (not the top-most one*).
With availability not till Dec or later, it's sheer stupidity to continue with their original plans to outline everything about the device within Q1.
If they do that & it doesn't have some very strong specs or at least one or two unique or top-notch hw aspects, then it's a major set-back
Sure the small community that's always rallied around Maemo/MeeGo et al will probably (at least partly) stick by them, but it won't get much wider momentum/appeal.
We'd have to hope that another Sailfish vendor does much better hw-wise, but then they prolly won't have some of the nice sw that Jolla plans to keep exclusive.
And the only vendors we've heard about so far aren't exactly well-known for quality builds, the best they may do is put powerful core components in there, & not value-add much elsewhere.
I pray to God this is a total BS story, & they're just "talking out of their ***" by making-up stuff that was never said...

*then again, being released in Dec+ now means the topmost one is possible, but there's still some Qn over how "truly competitive" that SoC is, esp. in Dec/Jan.

I dont need the topmost I am more scared I will not see the device in Sweden :( And if only finland It may very well be operator locked so no way to import :(

I'm not worried about that. I'm more worried we won't even see a phone on Any market. If they just like that lied about summer. What makes you think they won't push it another 6 month to July 2014? Then they have it right again becouse its summer... They don't have a clue what they are doing!

Where is the will, there is the way.. Of corse we must get it to Sweden too and other neighbors! I personaly don't beleave, that there is going to be any operator lock.

But what a f! End of the year! So, the Sailfish is not that ready after all... Ubuntu phone vs Jolla? Well.. One good thing. I bought LG Nexux 4 :) Welcome Ubuntu phone OS.

I don't care only about how optimised the sw is, or how open/flexible it is, specs DO MATTER...
Esp. for a co. like Jolla which has sold itself as: "we're just as much about the hw as the sw", & "we will offer a premium end device".
They need a "Nexus" ph to spark some momentum around Sailfish, having awesome code is only part of the equation, sure probably the most important, but specs are still weighty.
If the specs aren't top-notch, then the price better not remain "premium" as well... >.>

If developers and the community start show the world how far more ready sailfish SDK is, Jolla can take back the developers.

Sf-OS is already WAY more intresting that Ubuntus halfbacked touchos. Especially for all those developers in the QT and KDE community.

So there is still hope. But first strategy now, for Jolla, is to get the library opened so it can be ported to N9 ASAP. This is VERY IMPORTANT if they want apps ported to theyr comming device!

Such an anti-climax, if the Finnish business magazine has translated Dillon correctly. I thought it was only few days since it was confirmed that the device is out before summer, but looking at the news articles, it does not look like it was. And also in the latest tweets it looks like that the Q1 announcement could be postponed (https://twitter.com/JollaHQ/status/304151175207452673)

Im not that suprised after reading about the Creoir cooperation only in January. It hints that the physical design needed extra resources. http://nokiagadgets.com/2013/01/12/j...nounced-in-q1/ In the YLE article from January, Jolla is still communicating the Q1/before Summer schedule.

Here's a extremely bad quality new video of the UI with Marc: http://youtu.be/vkAv5_a7--M
Despite the quality, one can see a bit of the events feed and how to set favourites eg in settings.

ps. my first post here at TMO. I try my best to follow the example laid by my favourite, Dave :)

I find it quite funny how you claim they lied when they made no promises.

The reason Jolla was so vague and ambiguous with that they said was in case they couldn't deliver on what they said that's why they made no empty promises.

It's sad I know, but I would rather see a finished product than a buggy mess.

Agreed, lied might not be the right word here. The argument don't want a "buggy device" is such a classic. It's always so fun to read it. No one wants a buggy device and this issue is not about that either.

That was very good translate:

"We are launching the first phone on the second half of this year in Finland and China. We aim at the Christmas market in Finland and the Chinese New Year market, Dillon says Taloussanomat."

It sound odd.. first he say it's out 2/2 - 3/4 of this year and then Christmas which is 4/4 of this year? Right? So... i am little pessimist :D, 2014 1/4 same time when Ubuntu phone is out too. Hope not, but i fear...

don_falcone 2013-02-27 13:56

Re: Jolla Sailfish Is stunning! Now on video!

...before Christmas? Seriously? The Motorola Nexus will be out before... And even if it comes earlier, there's a good bet it won't have that much _serious_ software available. (Sorry, hackjobs don't count) So it looks like i will have to switch all devices to Android as i don't want to drag things on & on, at least in the meantime/maybe next two years. (hello gerbick ;) For me it's proven that where i set my importance on works. I can live without HW keyboard, if circumstances are that way.

On video ~4:00->:
"we have 9 applications with active covers on the screen and other are available by scrolling". So, for now. Not so good multitasking device than N900 and N9/50 :(.

But Sailfish looking much better than it looked before (first videos)! Must say it too... redo icons! They don't look good and not blend in with the OS

NokiaFanatic 2013-02-27 14:30

Re: Jolla Sailfish Is stunning! Now on video!

Hate to say it, but each month that Jolla delay, they are falling further and further behind the competition. Windows Phone has been out 2.5 years now and despite Microsoft throwing oceans of money at the platform, it's still miles behind catching up with Android and Ios. If Jolla are talking about a Christmas release, then you're looking at two years at very least before you have an eco-system that is mature enough for the average user, and that's assuming that Jolla actually is supported by devs. Are people going to wait until 2016 to have a comparable phone to the current market leaders? Also, the mobile market could be in a completely different place to where Jolla are in that time period.

Not true, it's based "largely" on CM, even uses Android's SurfaceFlinger (less open/free than Wayland etc), sure there's lot of their own little tweaks, esp. at the upper layers, but overall it's very disappointing that they're going that route. I can totally understand why they are, in many ways it's more pragmatic than Jolla's approach, but at the same time it's somewhat cowardly/uncreative/boring compared to Jolla's approach.
