it ruins it though when you have to explain what a terminal is let alone have some chump in a phone shop say "n900?? not really a smart phone is it?" and try sell me a samsung omnia7 haha. i just walked out shaking my head.

I doubt there are 92K meego developers out there who would apply so maybe there will be one left for him.

Hell half of those who brought the n95 didn't realise it could multitask or that it was a smartphone ..

Now if that was Apple's A95, they would have ..

That is simply nokia's #uberfail

No. Everyone can get it if they want. It's just a device that only developers want. Simple.

Probably so that somebody in Engadget can Dish it tomorrow .. Hopefully I won't get my comments deleted from there ..

Phone shop assistants are usually uninterested in really understanding the phone market. A week before Motorolla Xoom's release in the UK I walked into a Vodafone store (Westfields) and was asked if I meant a phone and not a tablet. Shocked at his ignorance I stood there and explained the Android tablet market and even pointed out Vodafone's website advertising the Xoom.

Why do you care who gets what? Theres room for both types of devices in the consumer space, if the KB version has a limited run with a focus towards devs, then so be it.

Ive long been a hwkb fan but despite trying countless devices over the years, i wasnt able to find a landscape keyboard i was really happy with. Turns out im portrait keyboard man, for small but frequent inputs, the E71 type is perfect for me.

So looks like Nokia made me happy, E6 + N9 for normal life and i will get a Dali if its available.

Its not just the sales person .. Apple has been guilty of it too .. The original iphone was a feature phone .. what did Apple brush it up as ..

...

A smartphone

Yeah, and their attitude is that they know everything most of the time.

Re: The EPIC N9 anticipation thread

I still see the iphone as a feature phone with some additional smartphone abilities - just like s40.

The term smart phone was hijacked to make the average ignorant consumer feel 'smart'. Suddenly they could check weather on their phone and use currency conversion tools and then came the fart apps. People forget Nokia had an App store years before the iPhone (not implemented that great but perhaps the market/tech wasnt ready?) and the N95 I ran with managed to outdo the iphone original (and 3g) in almost every way.

It is still a device that is made to run Apps. it's an App Device. One interface with square buttons to open Apps.

As much as we might complain about apple and the unjust popularity it gains I rather own a device that performs and meets most of my expectations then a device that I spend hundreds of £'s on and then convince myself that is truly is magical. Sad that the mobile/tablet world has been corrupted by imitators.

Krustylicious 2011-06-20 23:54

Re: The EPIC N9 anticipation thread

Afaq, Apple made installing apps easy.. Nokia failed in that .. Sure you can do paralell downloads and install on Nokia Store (bye ovi), but the apple "app" store is actually nicely laid out, especially on the ipad.

Talking of tablets ...

afaq 2011-06-20 23:59

Re: The EPIC N9 anticipation thread

no one denies iphones ease of use. id rather not start a nokia vs apple debate because im sure most of us are in agreement on the key issues.

as for nokia apps - i hope intels appUp store has a big part to play in all of this. ovi was and is a major failure.

Depends what i want from that device, if we look at demographics, most people wanted a featurephone that could check their email or go on facebook.. The iphone serves that task and does that well. Android tries to copy and give extra options. Symbian erm well just gives you every option that you could possibly change but not make it easy for jessy's girl.

Question is has Nokia lost Jessy's girl for good ..

If people that should know say you won't miss the HWKB, they must mean their is some kind of transparent software keyboard overlay mode where you can just see the terminal input as you were typing it on a HWKB

Disruptive stuff: with this generic candybar design I hope for battery life breakthrough and some way of scrolling kinetic scrolling that can be controlled by twisting so I need only one single hand and no touch to the screen to start scrolling.

Well, here's what I think Nokia should do. Keep the variation AND cut down on the top model list.

I had better get a few Thanks! on this, not because I'm so smart but because I used Paint Shop Pro and it's a total pain to use compared to Photoshop. :B

Good idea .. They really only need 4 versions of a device ..

n8 style.
e7 style
e6 style
And touch and type x2 type thingy ..

Oh and stop nokiadirect only selling the coloured versions :O .. try getting an orange n8 on an orange uk pay monthly contract ..

Re: The EPIC N9 anticipation thread

Call me picky but I'm not really liking the right angle corners, wish it had a bit more curve on the device. Will it be 4G is a good question, will it rock Nokia's pentaband radio's or be locked into a certain carrier like AWS or GSM?

I also wished for a HWKB, but a virtual keyboard with tactility seems like the Storm's Surepress which I hope is not repeated. If sends small amounts of current through the skin I wonder how this will fare for the overall battery life?

I've been noticing Nokia has been backing away from high density batteries. I remember 1500mAh was the norm around 2007, 1320mAh batteries and lower are not what I had in mind for faster processors albeit these processors are far more efficient. I say pair efficiency with more battery for the win.

Aside a phone release, I really want to know where MeeGo plays in Nokia's strategy going forward and I am sure to WP7 phones will get a mention just so they can boost the stock price with todays hype espousing phone reveal. Now I mention stocks because this will energize the asian market as it is open during the press conference, and this will work it's way down to the European and American markets.

I will keep my expectations low, that way I can be impressed more easily or hide further disappointment at Nokia if it is a dud.

I'm a developer, though not Nokia developer. So it's still not clear for me what would be the distribution channel for the Dali device. Until some official statement I guess.

I am thinking if there is going to be a special distribution channel for the Dali device, it's going to be the same as for prototype devices. Almost like trade software for hardware.

Oh, and if you keep your expectations low, you're doing the same as stock traders. It was a new low today, at $5.79. Apparently, nobody expects the Spanish e... Eh, russian revo... Uhm, a jolly good show at the Nokia Connection.
