On N900 I have never even bothered to install the APK launcher because all it would offer me is play some Android game and wear my precious device.

Different situation on Sailfish. Want to surf comfortably: Firefox, want to SIP call: csipsimple , need to Skype: install Skype apk and allow access to your contacts for it to work etc..

If you're going to quote me, please do it accurately. You missed out half of my sentence which was the part pertaining to the point I was making. I completely understand that people want to run Android apps.

I don't see how the amount of attention on together.jolla.com is relevant when we are on talk.maemo.org here. Both sfdroid and Shashlik have been discussed and have their own threads. In the case of sfdroid, there are details on how to install, test, use.

My mention of Shashlik was somewhat hypothetical. It's still in early stages of development and won't yet run on Sailfish. I mentioned it as it shows potential in different areas to sfdroid. One of their aims is to be lightweight, the Android base will be stripped down to a minimum. Also it's not a Sailfish or Wayland only solution so it may eventually run on N900, N9, Neo900, etc.

If having a comfortable experience is your main concern then you are better off using an Android phone than Alien Dalvik. Solutions like sfdroid have a chance to be as good as Alien Dalvik but not if they get ignored.

This community exists because of free software. Free software largely defines it. Making proprietary software a decisive device purchasing factor hurts it and leads me to wonder why you are even here in the first place. Purchase a Fairphone not because it might run Alien Dalvik should some corporate overlords decide so, purchase it because it's likely that it will run sfdroid.

For me the Alien Dalvik belongs to category "would be nice to have", I currently still use N9 and can live with no Android apps.

However, as long as there is no good offline native navigation software (preferably with vector based maps) for Sailfish I would need some sort of Android emulation.

And good Exchange support is needed, I need it both for my work and personal email and calender sync. So: for me official port of Sailfish is needed before I can migrate.

To me, the offline navigation, even if I don't run it so often to be honest, is a must have. And I don't think sfdroid is ready for a daily use. But correctly if I'm wrong.

IMHO, the FP2+SFOS association shows the limitation of such thing.

When the N9 was released, it was a beautiful piece of engineering on BOTH hardware and software. For example, Harmattan was designed to be driven with one hand only and the N9 hardware was totally on the same line: a small width to well handle the phone, and (already!) what's called today a 2.5D screen to really feel the screen edges under your thumb.

With all the respect the FP2 deserves (and it deserves a lot), a 74 mm wide phone would never gives the same comfort and efficiency to drive SFOS with one hand only. Except, of course, for people who have really big hands.

I finally gave up with the N5, because, even at 69 mm, it's too big for me (plus it has some issues with SFOS). I first tought of buying a FP2 to support them, but once I took back my Jolla in hands, I felt really, really more at ease to use my phone.

Let's hope for a FP2 Mini!

While I find aliendalvik very useful for filling some gaps, it's hijacked this question a bit. The issue is about an official port rather than a community port, which means:

• Supported hardware adaptation i.e. driver bugs get fixed
• Sailfish updates are tested for and automatically delivered to the phone

On top of that, there may be commercial Sailfish components included, such as:

• Xt9 autocomplete
• Activesync, MS Exchange support
• A Map/Navigation application
• Aliendalvik

Alien Dalvik is of course an important, useful feature which sets Sailfish apart (though I'd be happier if I had more control over it) but it's not the be all and end all of official support. I do hope they'll deliver it even if they can't include dalvik, as I'd still buy it. I'm not buying it with community support only though, and I'm not buying the android version until I know I can flash it with an official, supported, Sailfish image. Maybe I should point that out...
