Yes I like the default colours better. I think it's easier to read the text on the light background.

Re: Easy Debian Fremantle Beta Testing

hstende: You can change the theming, you know. It is easier than running stuff through ssh -X.

The cool thing about running an SSH server in the chroot is that you can run your Easy Debian apps on OTHER COMPUTERS. Try running Easy Debian OpenOffice or Gimp on a full PC on the same network as the N900 by using the ssh -X technique! Very, very cool.

Just save your work frequently. ;)

fw190: I would recommend replacing the old image with the new one, so yes, use the "Close Debian" command and then delete the old image before installing the new one.

If you have installed a lot of new stuff into your image, then you'll have to do that again, and you'll have to set up your locale again too...

Thank you all for your patience!

This version has the Function-keys mapped to shift-fn + top row keys (for english keyboards). Your custom .xbindkeysrc won't be overwritten, however. Look for the .xbindkeysrc.dist file after upgrade.

Having not found 0.9.44-1fremantle1 anywhere but 0.9.44-2fremantle1 on Extras-devel, I've installed the latter and looked at .xbindkeysrc.dist.

qole, as far as I can see, you've mapped shift+fn+the upper row of the German keyboard to F1-F10, because F6 is Shift+Mod5 + z as it was in my .xbindkeysrc file. I think that by using only the keycodes one can actually cover both qwerty and qwertz keyboards at the same time - and hopefully all other national variants.

Code:

# F1-F12 mapped to Shift+Mod5 + keys from upper row:

"xvkbd -text "\[F1]""
 m:0x81 + c:24

"xvkbd -text "\[F2]""
 m:0x81 + c:25

"xvkbd -text "\[F3]""
 m:0x81 + c:26

"xvkbd -text "\[F4]""
 m:0x81 + c:27

"xvkbd -text "\[F5]""
 m:0x81 + c:28

"xvkbd -text "\[F6]""
 m:0x81 + c:29

"xvkbd -text "\[F7]""
 m:0x81 + c:30

"xvkbd -text "\[F8]""
 m:0x81 + c:31

"xvkbd -text "\[F9]""
 m:0x81 + c:32

"xvkbd -text "\[F10]""
 m:0x81 + c:33

"xvkbd -text "\[F11]""
 m:0x81 + c:59

"xvkbd -text "\[F12]""
 m:0x81 + c:22

rebhana: good catch. I changed the "comma" but I missed the "z". Will update to the keycodes and issue a new version. Is there an application that uses F6 so we can test the keycodes on various layouts? (EDIT: tested on Iceweasel, it works fine with your keycodes!)

Everyone:
I'm torn about the top menu problems people are having. If I leave the top menu compatible with the "old" LXDE, it will not allow apps to use the top area of the screen (go underneath the bar) by default. This is a big problem, since we have so little space vertically already.

But if I update the bar to work properly in the "new" LXDE, it doesn't work at all in the "old" LXDE. It actually disappears! What to do?

Has anyone tried installing the newest version of Adobe Flash in Easy Debian? I tried but failed. I get some error about xarchiver not recognizing "ar". There are a few sites that use Flash 10 only, and it would be great to be able to view them with my powerful new n900.

djview uses almost all of the function keys as shortcuts.

Concerning the top menu, I had a curious problem also with the "new" LXDE, albeit only once so far: I was not able to click on the application icon in the upper left corner although it was visible, thus couldn't open applications from there and also had to kill LXDE instead of being able to exit normally. (When I clicked on it, the icon below it moved, but didn't open the file manager - only when I clicked that directly.) Also, I didn't remember that the displayed time next to the application icon was in such tiny font. Did that change, too?

EDIT: Would it be possible to give the user the choice over the two possible behaviors? What would one have to do to go back to the old version of the top menu?

I again encountered the problem with the application icon described above, and then it went away when restarting LXDE.

I installed the image from page 45-46. Has the image been updated since then? Also, I edited the shortcuts in the rx-51 file and thought that they would also work in easy debian but they do not. How do I go about making shortcut keys in easy debian. It's hard without using tab, page dn, page up etc. Thanks.

19h39 : I fire up "Deb Img Install".
19h40 : Ask if I want to download from the Main or Sweden Mirror. I chose Main.
19h41 : Ask where I would like to install the image v3b. It will be MyDocs.
19h41 : ETA ~15 min.
20h01 : Asking me to extract the image file. Thanks for the warning ! I would also suggest to ask the user to go in "offline mode". If you receive a phone call of IM while the device is busy it will take a very very long time to be responsive again.

I've filed bug 9353, "File decompression can take a very very long time".

The fuser bug has an internal ID, which means it'll get fixed. Let's hope someone figures out why it can take so long to decompress a file that should only take 8mins to decompress, and we can get this one fixed too.

Thanks and sorry - I have ignored all those posts because I never had that issue before. I have only lenny packages. It stopped working without the / after I upgraded the easy... packages and installing one seemingly harmless application, zim, from lenny. Weird.

I've updated easy debian and a problem came out for me. Again with the menu icon. It was in the left upper corner but when i tried to tap on it nothing was happening. The solution for this was easy. I've taped ot the upper part of the screen and the on Add/Remove Panel items and then deleted the menu icon from the panel and closed the window. The I've opened it again and added the menu icon and then moved it on the first place in the panel and now everything works perfectly.
maybe this will help someone ;)

After closing and opening debian lxde again the problem comes back so I have to through the whole process again

Qole this isn't directly related to Easy Debian but I'm using it to run a web server on my n900. I used the packages from this site to do it http://www.greenhughes.com/content/w...ket-nokia-n900 the question I have is their anyway to move the location for root of webserver out of the chroot enviroment and either in MyDocs or SD card?

rebhana 2010-03-02 16:07

Re: Easy Debian Fremantle Beta Testing

I'm not sure this could possibly have to do with Easy Debian, but I had the following problem (twice now) after I had done nothing expect playing around with Easy Debian (image v3b and newest packages), namely with xbindkeys and how to make that work with zim, a desktop wiki, and then closing Debian chroot. After that, CPU usage went to 100%, with battery draining rapidly, and the process behind that was /usr/bin/maemo-xinput-sounds. Unfortunately, I couldn't reproduce it by retracing what I had done before. Since I remember that qole had to work so hard with pulseaudio, I wonder whether the act of closing Debian chroot could have set this off. Has anybody else encountered similar problems?

rebhana: You've been a victim of bug 6365 (which I'm proud to say I helped to fix by providing a test case). It will be fixed in an upcoming firmware release.

If you see this behaviour, issue the command from the terminal:

andrewfblack: Not exactly sure what you mean by "the location for root of webserver," but if you mean the html root, just edit the httpd.conf file to point "DocumentRoot" at whatever directory you want, including /home/user/MyDocs/webserver or /media/mmc1/webserver. It should work as expected.

EDIT: Some useful info here.

I'm impressed! So it can be triggered by xbindkeys and one should watch out for it when using that?

So after updating I started getting this error.

Mount failure!
/home/user/MyDocs/debian-m5-v3b.img.ext2 failed to mount on loop0

/sbin/qmount: line 195: dmlosetup: not found
mount: mounting /dev/dm-0 on /.debian failed: no such file or directory

And I couldnt find this error in the thread.

Re: Easy Debian Fremantle Beta Testing

I have successfully installed and tested zim, a desktop wiki that seems extremely useful for a device like the N900. The newer version from squeeze is working well under Easy Debian, except that one faces the problem that one would occasionally want to use special characters which are not available on the hardware keyboard.

Running zim under debbie, which I would have preferred, I did not succeed in letting xbindkeys together with xvkbd produce some of the extra characters. Function keys F1-F12 can be emulated, but overloading special characters like bracketleft/right (which are missing on my German keyboard) does not work. I'm puzzled that for example
Code:

"xvkbd -text "\[F9]""
 Shift+Mod5 + o

"xvkbd -xsendevent -text '\t'"
  Control+Shift + t

does work to issue F9 and even allows me to insert a tab character in the text, but apparently no printable characters can be issued by e.g.
Code:

"xvkbd -text "\[asciitilde]""
  m:0x1 + c:65
  Shift + space

"xvkbd -xsendevent -text "\[braceleft]""
  m:0x4 + c:33
  Control + p

Since using xbindkeys in these experiments frequently fires up maemo-xinput-sounds with 100% CPU usage and dramatic battery drains, I switched over to LXDE, where I can in fact just use xmodmap to get more key bindings. (It's a known bug that xmodmap does not work from the terminal, but with LXDE, it's more or less fine, as I've reported earlier here.)

The only problem I'm now having with zim is the black background under Easy Debian. As a theoretical physicist, I would like to be able to insert math formulae, which one can do in zim using LATEX and dvipng , but the result is black on black as I discovered after a seeing nothing until I marked larger areas of the text. Too cool to be useful...

qole, you said earlier that the appearance of LXDE was easily configurable when somebody achieved a white background by ssh -X. But if I change themes, not much if anything changes, I always have black background!

I'm not sure why you can't change the theme. Edit /home/user/.gtkrc-2.0 and comment out the line that says, "MurrinaNightOrange". This will set your colors to the (boring) defaults. Your scroll bars will become narrow again, too.

EDIT: It was xkbcomp that I found triggered the bug.

I got openoffice.org 3.2 to work on my easy debian using the ubuntu-packages for armel, but I destroyed my image in the prossess after when I was cleaning up....

Installed the ubuntuversion found here:

EDIT: It was xmodmap that I found triggered the bug.

I now found that deleting the line "sNet/ThemeName=MurrinaNightOrange" in ~/.config/lxde/config allows me to change the theme from within LXDE. LXDE seems to change only the entry in /home/user/.gtkrc-2.0. Therefore, when the theme is also set in ~/.config/lxde/config, the only effect of changing the theme is in the small information window at startup about the keyboard.

"MurrinaNightOrange" is more beautiful - I'll try perhaps to change only the background color of some applications like zim.

So far I found xmodmap harmless when run under LXDE. Did you do that in terminal mode or debbie?
