Mine works just fine.

I'm online during the working day with 5 iM services, all using the standard Conversations application on the N900 (with the MSN plugin). I've had no trouble making.receiving calls while this is happening.

It would be kind of neat if it actually sucked. You could use it as an ultra mini-vac.

Right. I so much love these users who "find" bug and eventually make themselves clowns by making huge rant.

And you gotta love these users who "find" a user pointing out bugs by making huge rants and then make themselves dancing, silly irony-clowns by making a huge rant.

Worksforme and probably to many other users.

I would very very veeery careful when making any generalizations about bugs that I find from my N900. Just because if I did found bug from my n900 and straight forward jump from there making long rant about it and other stuff that is on my mind (reminds me of readers opinions section in local newspaper, I got mostly huge laugh of them because they are so bad) I would at least my self be ashamed if it didnīt hold and was only half true. So first I would try to find if there are others having this bug and do they have this bug in clean device.

Actually I have seen these cases so many. What it is that if you have problem with quite expensive device X and it doensīt work as you expect it to work then some people tend to go totally f-ckwad. I think that to go that level of pure anger needs at least 5 iterations of discussion and reading manuals and doing bug reports and after that you should let the pressure valve open.

e.g. I could take many rants more seriously if they had at least links to bugzilla or proper description of bug and how to reproduce them. Currently Iīm seeing some rants that I find absurd because things people rant (and tend to think that all have that problem) about work on my device.

Re: N900 - Yes, it sucks.

Yes, when working in tech support for eight years or so, I encountered many users who would claim "x doesn't work!!!" and it was obvious that x DID work for almost everyone but that user.

Moral: Don't assume that you are the world (or you and your friends, either)

This phone needs a decent bittorrent-client. I have tried them all: qtrapids, ctorrent, rtorrent, transmission they simply do not work.

I would recommend ctorrent + flashlite + dht + pex

I've used Transmission and others and they have worked for me. I've downloaded gigs of Wikipedia, for example.

Better would be better, of course.

Do you use it with FAT or ext3? I believe it is an file io problem. Using it with ext3 could solve the problem.

I was being sarcastic that time, actually... But I love that you provided more fodder. :) Truth be told, I don't mind people complaining about the bugs at all--not even minding the ranting, so long as they at least provide specific details and suggest how it should work or, better still, a solution.

What does using BitTorrent have to do with whether you're using ext3 or FAT?

So the fact that the screen blanks out for several seconds on an incoming call while it switches orientation is not a problem for you?

I never have the N900 as my main mobile these days - got fed up of calling people back with 'yeah sorry I missed your call'.

The way IM is handled is awesome though.

No, it's not. I have yet to miss a call due to transitions. And that was even before PR1.3 when the IO lag wasn't fixed.

And can we kill this topic, it's old, moldy, and just plain trollbait.

Re: N900 - Yes, it sucks.

Personally, I'm convinced that at least -half- the complaints and issues are probably due to a failing/poor sample chip(or other bit of hardware) that works right enough of the time to keep things running - Just like what happens when you OC the device with slightly too little voltage(most things will work, but odd crashes will happen).
Remember also that -technically- the N900's factory OC'd at 600mhz(or at least I heard that somewhere).

The problem is, the OS won't crash most of the time(It's Linux. It's resilient), and as such the users think it's a software problem.
This is why you can have two users, both with the -exact same- software, and one will have constant problems while the other won't.

For example, I've got a good sample, and while I've got it OC'd to 950mhz, I have had -zero- crashes in the last month or so. It's rock-stable, works great, and I have no problems with it. But, that was only -after- I tweaked the voltage; with a "stock" profile it would be unstable at a lot lower than that!

I used the steps from here to get the MyDocs to be ext3 and the Camera still work.

It's quite a bit of a work but is doable.

I'm not sure why in the world you want your /home to be FAT? That's just bass-ackwards..

Thank you for your reply. I'm an absolute noob, I went for solution #1 swapping home - MyDocs. I was thinking about the camera and other apps if they needed a fat partition. Also I want to know if you use bittorrent and if is more stable with ext3?

Link: http://wiki.maemo.org/Repartitioning_the_flash

P.S: I have read it - it seems a bit complicated. A download would be nice! Also swapping home with MyDocs that you can keep a widely compatible ( not only Linux ) USB - massstorage device. That's what it makes so interesting. Also I want to know how is the keyboard layout for the n900. I'm really needing for the pipe-sign, the lesser and the greater sign. Any idea?

Also I need some tester for my performance tweaks:
http://n900-tune-up.sourceforge.net

It tweaks certain kernel parameters, installs a simple firewall and a traffic-shapping script. Also it is throwing some errors and its speed not as good as wondershaper I believe it could be useful. I have ported it from my Linksys WAG54 device - the script is running very stable on this device. Its uptime now is about 100 days and I have about monthly 50 GB download and 150 GB upload.

If you follow the steps in my link, the Camera and stuff will no longer need FAT. Your home and your MyDocs will both be EXT3 and everything will work fine.

Yup, many ways to skin a cat and all that.. I used one of those solutions for a long time but dealing with FAT just got annoying (desktop is Linux as well so ext3 on everything doesn't affect me.)

Won't work that way. /home is not mounted when you connect via USB to the computer. Only SD cards and MyDocs are mounted. If you make MyDocs ext3 that is what will be exported to the computer via USB.

Those are in the Symbols menu. Not hard to get to but having them readily available would be nice. There is some how-to's in this forum to do that I believe (I seem to recall coming across them).. I don't have them off hand though. Look around, should find it.

The problem with ctorrent is that you have to delete all udp and bad tracker by yourself. Just dl the torrent-file and then go to www.torrenteditor.com and edit it. Delete all udp tracker and bad tracker (red color). That's all and ctorrent should find and connect them. I usually use this code:

ctorrent -d -U 30 torrentfile. I'm getting very good results also my device is sometimes unstable. Also there is no resume but it works with fat and it uses only about 10 percent cpu so that you can do other things.

Correct me if I'm wrong!

P.S.: get ctorrent + flashlite here:
https://wiki.cc.gatech.edu/epl/index.php/FlashLite

Never used ctorrent. Transmission on the N900 or qBittorrent on the desktop are usually the ones I use. The problem with FAT is the limit to file size is like 2GB or 4GB.. sometimes the files I download are larger than that. So I use ext3.

Conversation App Sucks!
User Interface Sucks!
File Manager Sucks!

I have been using nokia phones since i was 10.

I have developed Apps for Symbian & Maemo phones.
I used to love Nokia . I used to defend Nokia in all discussions against iphone and android...

Nokia will have a hard time to gain its old trust again...They have to lower prices to actually get us to buy their newer devices...I hope they learn to stop selling "prototype" phones to end-users.

and yes i wont be buying a Nokia phone in the near future.

i agree that n900 deserves that it's the closest portable device to a computer...
but there are some issues with its design

Actually one thing that really bothers is its portrait usability.
Nokia did not even made a portrait home screen.it is made by a hacker here in the forum ( thanks to that guy ). Isnt that a shame that much of a powerful phone doesnt come with portrait mode. :/

Because of the lack of design in UI im having a big need to use qwerty keyboard. I dont feel that much of hardware keyboard need in nitdroid . I dont hate it at all you know it could be a perfect phone with a better design.

the other day i wrote about "conversation app sucks etc." i was quite angry because conversation kinda crash over and over again + didnt receive messages + lost the order of messages
and that kinda caused a misunderstanding and lead an argue with my gf

never mind ,even that happens some time ,many say here,N900 was a prototype and duh mother nokia didnt even feed well to this cutie pie ..so you are right but it happens ..And best part of N900 is TWEAKs ,you may see many users here ,buying iphone/android etc and soon they realise that it is fartingly useless cuz you cant drive those handsets your way ,you just gotta follow them .but N900 umm ,who knows you might be interested in being a developer? so <3 it ( thats all what i think about N900- all personal )

Actually what _i_ love from the 900 is the landscape design. Its better for holding & texting on it (compare to that really crappy chat timeline on the iPhone!), and it's better to view webpages on since you have to scroll vertically anyway, but often have the whole horizontal resolution for viewing - not like on iPotatos or generic Droids. I really dunno what portrait is taht useful for - phone calls / dialing screens coming to mind, but what else?
