Could also be battery % - it does like a good 70% for an OTA update....

Definitely not battery % related as I've been trying since 100%.

If worst comes to worst comes to worst, people having trouble can do both kinds of reformat mentioned on the Wiki. I had to do the eMMC format a few days ago. This doesn't stop you from backing up and restoring, but it helps sort things out and may help root out devils in the graveyard you didn't know were there.

It's a wonderful feeling to get back to the clean, efficient, awesome N900 you had when you first got it, and you learn from the process of starting over again. Just be patient and the N900 will pay you back.

for checking no updates in your region or just problem with you phone use:
1. open x-terminal
2. sudo gainroot (You need rootsh package installed)
3. apt-get update
4. apt-get upgrade
On question upgrade answer no.
Before answering look on list available packages for upgrade....

if you will see applications from list: http://talk.maemo.org/showpost.php?p...4&postcount=16
It is mean problem with your phone and you install packages which prevent you from upgrade. In this case place on the forum question with outcome from "apt-get dist-upgrade" (but answer NO on question install?)...

Close application manager before doing it.

Well, my understanding is that doing so will remove ALL my self-installed apps and then I'd have to re-install them all anyway. A number of these were, if I remember correctly, painful to install and get working properly. Namely, in increasing order of pain-in-the-a**ness:

fMMS
garnet
vncviewer
QStarDict
Stellarium
OpenVPN
debian & CUPS

plus downloading OVI maps (time involved...takes my phone offline).

My wife already thinks I spend way too much time tinkering with this thing and I'm starting to agree!!

Thanks, mikhmv, good instructions.

I've just done this and there's no firmware packages being held back or waiting to upgrade currently for me. I have a 203 (Nokia UK/unlocked) handset, hopefully it'll save some others with a 203 a bit of time checking/asking for the moment

Just confirming, installing devel applications does not necessarily bar you from the update.

NAM (North America) version updates fine.

Appologies if this has been asked but is there a delay for this update in the uk?
having checked for the updates and thru the nokia software updater at

Go to http://europe.nokia.com/A4305060 i then receive the following message:

Latest available software for Nokia N900, product code xxxxxxx
Version: 2.2009.51.1

Compare numbers
If this version is greater than your current software version, update now to get the latest features, applications and improvements. Go to Nokia Software Updater download

You sound like Mr Micawber!

I begin to suspect we're going to be denied this one. I blame vodafone. Not that I have a vodafone device, just that they seem good people to blame. And it's a change from blaming Nokia for once. Or Tony Blair. Or Jonathon Ross. Or the Bankers.

So for tonight, yes, UK won't get it and it's all vodafone's fault. I'll think of someone else to blame tomorrow.

I'm with Kathy, it's Vodafones fault! Ha ha. I broke out of my 'Direct-from-Vodafone' 205 thinngy and reflashed to 203 before the last minor and subsequent major update so I blame VF too :D

Tried to update using NSU, to the latest firmware 3.2010... NSU started to freeze in step 3/3, 1 sec remaining, after a our! NSU timed out and said it failed.. Tried to restart, claimed it couldn't find the phone! (The phone was still in update mode) So i unplugged it and tried to "boot" it.. And it failed, just stays at NOKIA and white background...

Then i tried flasher, but when connecting the USB while holding the U Button.. seems NOT to work!, the USB icon will not appear in right top screen!

Now i picked up a older laptop with XP on it, same method, holding U while usb.. XP recognize as Nokia flasher something (right bottom corner of the screen) then it say's.. Hardware won't work properly, and still NO usb icon on the nokia! Tried all the USB port's.. Damnit, this all because NSU failed to work :/

eeeeeeeeeeek - erm good question now, i'm assuming its a call to nokia support? (Not that i'd expect much back....) - there are many other threads on constant rebooting, do a search and a hunt first before posting for specific help.... may get lost in this thread.

Shouldn't do :) - it won't let you do it OTA if it detects problems or conflicts beforehand.

Is the battery fully charged? The N900 won't switch into USB flashing mode unless the battery is sufficiently charged.

No, but something might break compatibility with some apps (no specifics... it just got released...)

I'm just holding off because my rootfs is below 42 MB (http://wiki.maemo.org/Maemo_5/PR1.1.1) and I can't be bothered to uninstall anything.

Anywho, I've already broke some stuff, and just looking for another excuse to re-flash.

You may need to flash the eMMC as well then. Power off the N900 and connect it via USB first - it should start up in mass storage mode, allowing you to backup the data from the MyDocs folder before you reflash it.

You'll need to charge it externally then - either in a compatible phone (e.g. Nokia 5800) or a separate battery charger (you can pick them up cheaply on ebay).

The following packages have been kept back:

What's that??

Re: New N900 firmware 3.2010.02-8 released today (16 Feb)

Just entered my product code into the flasher tool binary files website.

I was offered all the available binaries, and have downloaded the Global binary.

For everyones information, there are inly three new binaries available:

USA: RX-51_2009SE_3.2010.02-8.002_PR_COMBINED_002_ARM.bin
MENA: RX-51_2009SE_3.2010.02-8.003_PR_COMBINED_003_ARM.bin
Global: RX-51_2009SE_3.2010.02-8_PR_COMBINED_MR0_ARM.bin

There is no, I repeat, NO UK variant of the firmware available. The latest UK version is still:

UK: RX-51_2009SE_1.2009.42-11.203.2_PR_COMBINED_203_ARM.bin

The question is, will I damage my phone if I try to install the Global binary onto my (UK) hardware?

I suspect that Vodafone is to blame - they will be developing the UK unbranded version in parallel with the UK Vodafone version, and if the Vodafone version gets held up in approvals then us unbranded users will also get hit
