Thanks Peter, using posted .deb and it works much better!

Sorry it took me a while getting back to you, I wanted to fully test the latest .deb for issues.

Re: Ovi Store - Instinctiv

Just read through the entire thread and gotta say that the dev response on this app is AWESOME.

Would like to add an additional vote for browse by folder, would definately replace default player if Instinctiv had that feature.

I noticed nobody mentioned anything in regards to possible shake to control integration. There's an app for the default media player called "Shake 2 Control" where shaking the N900 side to side would skip to next track, and shaking it towards you would pause the track. It also has a nice feature which prevents it from activating if the proximity sensor senses something (i.e. N900 is in your pocket). Problem there is that none of the features are configurable, so you can't change shake sensitivity or disable the "pause" function or somesuch (I only really need next track). Apparently source code for that is here: http://talk.maemo.org/showpost.php?p=539997&postcount=7
Would be nice to have just a checkbox somewhere for "shake for next track", even better if its configurable, but not too picky about it =P

In regards to volume/camkey for playback control, qwerty12 wrote a closed app for default media player called "Extended Locked Media Player Control" which does stuff similar to what people were suggesting. Not sure how he did his magic, but just some food for thought. Code is closed cause he was completely pissed at the community/Nokia, though.

Anyways, just good to know that someone is actively working on providing a GREAT media player application, will keep tabs on this project as it definately seems promising.

We've got some unicode issues for sure that should be addressed in the last big bug fix we roll out (probably still two releases away -- or about 4 weeks). Remember, it took Apple like 2 years to get copy and paste on the iPhone :p so give us a bit more time to sort these remaining issues out :)

There was an update 2 weeks ago that makes the app usable. Peter said there should be another release in about 4 weeks, He said this about a week or 2 ago

September 28th I believe... >> YO <<

This version when installed on a clean device (no files from previous versions left on board) will pull user album art if ii is in a cover.jpg file stored in the albums directory.

Other formats and schemes may work but this^ is what works for me. cover.jpg may supersede embedded art or it may not even look at embedded art, IDK. All my albums have a cover.jpg image.

Some of my songs have a different image embedded however, only the cover.jpg is shown.

That's all I got.

When you first start Instinctiv give it some time to find your art, index, and whatever else it does. Closing mid process seems to cause more directories and files to be created then needed.

BTW, the following image shows what they are apparently working on. Maybe we can give this thread a break if our issue is listed. No need to state it again and again. :)

We actually have landscape mode working except for one bug -- when we lay the phone flat it ALWAYS defaults to landscape no matter what the orientation previously was. We're trying to set that straight but once we do we'll do a mini update on the forum.

I have seen this happen before with other landscape/portrait mode apps. So, I doubt it is your bug. :)

Re: Ovi Store - Instinctiv

Browser doesn't. At least mine doesn't.

If it's an external call I guess it's a general bug, but isn't it possible to read accel manually, in code, and only switch in clear conditions? Like, 80 percent on needed axis and max 30 or so on the others.

P.S. Images don't do this on my device, either. Open image, rotate to portrait, lay phone back, no change.

Also, maybe you could fix to landscape on kbd open, that should help.

You're probably using the HILDON_PORTRAIT_MODE_SUPPORT flag, which does that for some reason...
Using mce.h from libmce-dev to get orientation might solve it.

another great feature would be the ability to select music based on the rating found in the mp3's tag and to also let users rate music and then store this in the tag. most music players let you select music based on rating and popularity (number of times you listened to individual tracks). it was dissapointing that the built in player missed both of these features...

I would like to give a big hearty second to both these feature requests. I'm currently trying to expand my musical tastes so I regularly add new stuff and try to listen to it to sort out the good from the bad. Any chance these features are being worked on? Do any of the other music players for the N900 support anything like this? I've tried the default one, Mediabox, and Tunewiki and couldn't find anyway to do so.

Peter, if I use the Identify function and don't have internet connection, it keeps identifying forever (or longer than my patience :D ). Is there a time out set for it?

And one more request: can you make Instinctiv pull media files the same way as media player does (so that those of us using tracker-cfg could remove some folders from being monitored and prevent media files from being added).

Actually on that point, can there be a setting to automatically select a default and secondary internet connection for Identify, so it auto connects, identifies then disconnects?

We're getting really close with that massive update we've been promising. Lyrics, however, won't be a part of it. There is no legally safe way to provide lyrics for free -- we've investigated thoroughly. We did get the rights to lyrics recently however and are looking at how best to monetize that. I'll take a poll on what you guys prefer:

- small recurring (monthly) fee
- single bigger payment
- ads

The bad thing about ads is that they'd probably wind up pretty much everywhere in the player, not just when using lyrics. The good thing about payments is that if you don't want lyrics the existing features are is still free. Also, it'd be helpful to know what you guys would be willing to pay for lyrics. We need to figure out if we can break even on this and if it's worth doing.

You can only show ads in the lyrics display. Actually, it makes more sense, as the lyrics display does not need to show the whole player UI, so you can show a decently sized ad there (or two, top and bottom).

Not so fast :) The problem is that we have a minimum payment we'll owe for the lyrics and a per lyric payment. Showing ads only in the lyrics section probably won't cover it so we'll have to slather the ads on in pretty much every part of the player. (If you can't tell, I hate ads ;))

Agreed. Ads are nasty. I would especially be inclined to pay for lyrics if robust multilanguage support was included; other lyric programs Ive used never seem to pull up stuff for my non-English music.

Not a dime. :)

I don't need lyrics and I don't want a Karaoke machine. You do make a mighty fine portrait mode Media player for the N900 though and I'm hoping you can monetize the profile information that an Instintiv user generates to cover your costs and produce a profit.

I would pay for a stand alone program or add on that would allow me to edit the album art that is associated to individual songs.

I would think others, (including myself) would pay a small fee for a variety of modules or add ons like "Cross fade", "Equalizer", and other DSP settings. :)

Definitely, ads make it feel cheap and a commodity. I love that none of my apps have ever displayed an advert, when i saw one of my Hero I couldn't believe it.

Peter, if ads enter Instinctiv, I will uninstall it, and i doubt i'm the only one. I don't want to, because i think once it's updated it will be amazing and i will use it as default, but not with ads. Please, put the lyrics addon in Ovi with a one-off fee and people will buy it.

noooo no ads, and i have to say i wouldnt pay for lyrics either, they'd be a nice addition but not worth paying for. perhaps a function to incorporate lyrics we have acquired elsewhere?
(then perhaps someone could generate a script for auto fetching seperate from instinctiv)

You found ammo refill! +1 ammo from Ndi.

I'd pay for features if you have a decent price and take PayPal. Maybe individual features, ideally. I'd pay for sync lyrics and EQ. Don't care for crossfade. To each his own.

No to ads!
Down with those ads!
Those ads tuk er jerbs!

More seriously: I'd pay to have features.
Lyrics aren't one of those things that I really care about.
I will pay for better "Identify" success or voice command support.

I will grudgingly pay for gestures - grudgingly because I know Qt has gesture support and for all the free stuff you've provided if gestures cost money then its weird.
(Gestures was just an example, btw)

You may want to consider pricing per feature.

Ads are horrible, please no. You have so far a really good application with potential. Please don't ruin the experience with silly ads. Rather focus on the features and if neccessary, apply a one time payment.

Re: Ovi Store - Instinctiv

Completely agree, I would rather pay for a good product than have to put up with ad support...

Also could care less about lyrics, dont need them in a mobile player at all! Just want a player that is easy to navigate, feature rich (equalizer, album art etc) and allows music to be easily found and selected on the device i.e. 3000+ songs can be tricky to navigate on a smaller screen!

ndi 2010-10-24 23:11

Re: Ovi Store - Instinctiv

Just for clarification, everyone seems to be talking about a lyrics downloading service. My vote was for embedded lyrics support. I don't care for automatic retrieval on the device, what I want is for the device to display the lyrics from the MP3 file.

I use the PC to manage my music collection. I find that manually combing a five digit number of songs and associated media is a task that should not be undertaken on a portable device. Personal opinion.

romanianusa 2010-10-25 00:49

Re: Ovi Store - Instinctiv

Peter, did you know ads is the most hated thing on the internet?? Now you know!

Anyway, I am willing to pay for the lyric functionality than to deal with ads. I don't think it cost much. I will pay for the functionality of the ability to change arts also. Also, i like to pay for a "repeat" option for single song and entire playlist. And a landscape mode that change arts when swipe.

That's all...looking forward to next update.
