Nicolai has rewritten both the "Display" and the "Notification lights" applets in Settings, at first glance, you won't notice any changes (after all, that's why they're "clones"), however, if you apply CTRL+SHIFT+R, then you'll see the applets are displayed properly now, I'll add portrait support to the control panel in a future update (need to check the rest of the applets that don't work).

Sorry if i sound a little dumb, but what exactly are we looking at here? I did not find any change even after pressing CTRL+SHIFT+R in these two applets.

Probably if somebody actually noticed the difference then they could post a screenshot.

Thanks.

After installing the SSU, i have noticed my phone handing a lot and going slow. It was fine initially but now suddenly it is very slow, high CPU usage, any one with similar experience

You enabe the autorotation with CTRL+SHIFT+R. The portait mode is now working flawlessly for this two applets.

...same here - the whole (OC to 900) device feels snappier - and my battery lifetime did improve a lot...
EDIT: still - using the device as a phone (I know the N900 is more than a phone) drains my battery the most – anything we could about this :)?
Thanks again to the guys involved - keep it coming!

? Then use it as traditional phone. Do not use browser. Use only 2g connection. Donīt connect to wifi and do not use internet. Keep display brightness at minimum and put it on only when you are going to call and/or text message.

Also this forum is full of hints how to make it last little longer and of course our wiki is one place to look for too:
http://wiki.maemo.org/Make_your_battery_last_longer

Then again you have to remember that probably the maximum standby time you can get from it is probably 3-4 days

Sorry - seems like my statement was not clear enough; I use it - of course - as much more than just a phone. Using the CSSU my battery lifetime (checking my eMail accounts, surfing in the INet, etc.) did get better (and yes: having all the other tweaks in place regarding battery consumption) - still:
the most battery drain I can observe while using the device as "traditional phone" - therefore my question...

lol

That is not the mistaken impression the user receives when using the "Open Link in New Tab" function in the Firefox browser running on the N900. The new tab opens in the background, & a brief notification of "New Tab Opened" appears to signal that it has done so while the user continues on the original page. It is a matter of designing to fit operation.

For me the latest cssu modest fails to open unread messages from the message list, and throws out-of-memory errors when using the carat-buttons to cycle through messages.

Would love to give more details but I'm not sure where these problems might be syslogged to.

Fixed:

  • bug #11839: Show the previous e-mail after deleting an e-mail in VIEW mode
  • bug #11858: Unexpected repeated button To:
  • bug #11859: No bottom send button anymore
  • bug #11874: Impossible to select text once the email is scrolled
  • Replaced osso-applet-notificationlight and osso-applet-display with FOSS clones by Nicolai Hess (cloes #11913 and #11932).
  • Merged Thomas Perl's patches to configure font size in the application menu.

And a quick note about the last two lines there.

As for thp's patch, it allows you to easily change the font used in the application launcher, just edit /usr/share/hildon-desktop/transitions.ini and change the font in tile_font (task_nav section).

So thanks to nicolai and thp for their additions to the SSU :)
Also, thanks to naikel (not sure if he's on tmo) for the patches to modest.

I also added a preinst script to hildon-desktop, this should back up your current transitions in /usr/share/hildon-desktop/transitions.ini.old.

2 Questions:

1. How can I check what version of SSU I actually have installed on my N900?

2. How can I update my SSU-Version via OTA or xterm?

NightShift79 2011-02-15 21:49

Re: The in-development Maemo 5 Community SSU

1. open FapMan or AppMan and check the version of the installed Maemo 5 Community pack
2. apt-get update && apt-get upgrade

I am not experiencing this problem and AFAIK i have done nothing special to retain functionality of these drivers. are you sure you aren't experiencing an isolated case specific to your setup/configuration. what about error logs? unless you want to hand your device over to someone else to troubleshoot for you, you are going to have have to give us a little information.

Installed yesterday on my testing N900, seems to work fine.

Any chance of getting the stylus keyboard back, like the one on the 770 and N8x0 ?

Post the output of uname -r, the kernel was not changed in the CSSU so this isn't related anyway.

CSSU seems stable, whilst there were concerns about users having to flash their phones I can't recall anybody on this thread actually having to do that as a result of installing the CSSU.

Although it is up to the user totake the risk

i have been experiencing this problem at seemingly random intervals since i bought the device over a year ago. same go for the power key reboot button not always rebooting the device, but turning it off instead. i believe these are problems with the actual fremantle release, not the ssu. however, if the ssu could remedy these issues that would be great, though they are really more of a very slight annoyance that anything else.

I think, IMO that this problem is related to power kernel. I did never talk about this before because I thought it was knew.
Installing Power Kernel make the phone not to reboot (At least in my case). Each time I Flash my phone, and add reboot option to power menu (or even reboot from command line), everything goes well. But Once I install an application which requires Power Kernel, the phone does not reboot.
So if the community could glance at it, it would be very cool!
By the way, Thanks for this SSU, (even if i did not install it yet) You are making a great job for the community! Thanks a lot!!

Re: The in-development Maemo 5 Community SSU

As suggested by Jaffa here, I made an attempt at adding information about what's to come.
I took some 'artistic liberties' (read: assumptions) about what is going to be added, judged by posts from Mohammed and will expand on this later.

Also, I added a paragraph how to see what version of the CSSU you have installed, suggestions/improvements welcome (it's a very simple draft).
