No it isn't the dubstep version.

It's just a little different.

Let me start by saying that I currently use a 16gb iPhone 4s. I had all of the iPhones with a 6 month use of a samsung focus between the iPhone 4 and 4s as I lost the 4 in a cab and needed something till the newest iPhone came out. I also had a bang and olufsen serene before the first iPhone so I appreciate having something that is well designed and somewhat rare, That said the iPhone 4s works very well and I have no complaints except that I recently held the N9 and was quite taken with it.

Now I am considering returning my iPhone 4s and getting the N9 but I have some questions. I have read through all of the posts here and these are the things that are of interest:

I drive a porsche and inside it is a PCM (porsche communications management) that allows me to use the phone through a bluetooth connection. I have read others post with issues of NOT being able to have access to the phones directory. Is this true? Does it work on some systems and not others? If not then is there no way to scroll through my phone book through the cars interface?

How is the use of the speaker phone to conduct calls as I have heard the speaker is rather quiet.

How are the alerts? I really appreciate well done clear alerts that are not song based and the serene I had did this beautifully with super cool noises.

I guess thats all I really want to know. I found the phone to feel and look amazing and I understand that sometimes one has to live with quirks in order to have something unique. If what matters most to me in use is: Make phone calls, robust messaging capabilities, internet and pictures, and facebook will I be happy coming from a 4s? Also does anyone know if Shazam will be available?

LAST question... I read that iTunes will sync your photos and contacts and music ... is this true and is it easily done?>

Thank you very much,

X-

Hello!

The N9 is a very different beast from the i4S. I can try it on my car radio and report back tomorrow, although I don't unfortunately drive a porsche so you could never be sure. The speaker is good enough, and it is on the bottom of the phone so it does not get muffled in your pocket. It is definitely louder than that of a galaxy S and softer than the N900 and the king of the hill the N95.

As for the messaging and call capabilities there is really no competitor (maybe mango could come near it but not yet). Messages are all integrated and it is the same if you receive a call or message on skype or cellular or gtalk, so you don't need to have open apps to use various messaging services. I'm sure more plugins will come to support more protocols, as was the case with the N900.

About iTunes support I have no idea, but you can just transfer your music as you would with a flash drive, and windows media player, banshee, Rhythmbox etc can sync to a mass storage device fine, I assume iTunes can do that too. I don't know about the contacts, but you can sync with google just fine with mail for exchange, it is a two step thing though rather than one.

I have the N9 only for a day so I cannot comment anymore on it, but the software is an improvement of N900's maemo, which I know pretty well, and while it has it's drawbacks, it is a software that is addictive to use, with an outstanding user interface. Those assets were improved even more in Harmattan and I would recommend it, given that you say you are prepared to face some quirks.

EDIT: Now I saw you pulled the trigger! Welcome to our community and have fun. Tip: the most fun comes from things this device will do that we never expected it to do. I bet there will be tons of them

In theory it shouldn't matter, as far as I am aware, since the actual electronic contact area remains the same. But can anyone report success with cutting down such a mini SIM for the N9 (rather than examples of success for the iPhone)? I ask because my current mini SIM is of the large format

i have had no problem mine is from Tmobile in the US and I cut it down. No issues

Is it possible to add more GPRS connections? I can't seem to find a way to do this. Every time I try to add a new network using Settings > Internet connection > Create new connection, I can only create wireless networks.

I still have issues on my N9: random reboots, freezes etc, various applications.

Product variant is 059J1V4. Version is 10.2011.34-1_PR_001 .

I can't download anything at all from Ovi Store, error message is "unable to continue installation due to unresolved error".

I've tried clearing the device settings and files, but it hasn't helped.

I may have to return it, unless anyone knows of a fix for this issue.

Fixed it.

This is so odd. My pin set for Track and Protect was e.g. (making this up now) 987654 and this didnt unlock the phone. but the pin i usually use is 2 digits longer. e.g. 98765432 (8 digits). This was too long for the password to be set but i typed it in anyway. So when I hit forgot password on track and protect it gave me the first 6 digits of that password. Which of course didnt unlock my phone BUT did give me access to the website for track and protect.

So i tried entering the 8 digit passcode and it worked. How odd and strange is this? Find it quite ridiculous.

Thanks for the help guys

what did you install and enable? it's most likely related. anything that was alpha or beta? dev mode enabled? etc.

I found that the Twitter client would not connect the first time if I was connected through WiFi - in fact using WireShark it was apparent the client was not even making the attempt. I switched to the 3G network and it connected first go. After that it would connect OK with WiFi.

It still gives me "unable to load trending topic" though on the search screen, WiFi or 3G.

The "unable to continue installation due to unresolved error" was due to low battery in my situation. I just don't know why some apps throw unresolved error and some others clearly state that the battery is low. Anyway when I plugged the charger everything installed fine

By the way my compass thumbnail is NOT live like in this video

Yeah my compass thumb nail isnt active like in that video either. I think I read somewhere that they made a snapshot instead of having it run live in the tiles, for some reason. May be untrue.

Thanks for replying, the crashing started before I installed anything, just using the browser and built in apps, so perhaps it is network or hardware related? (I am on O2 in the UK)

I tried installing the following from the store (nothing in beta AFAIK):

Filebox (installed after a few attempts) but is no longer visible
Compass (installed after a few attempts)

Both the above showed some kind of download error.

No other applications would install: Recorder, Battery Usage, Nokia City Scene, Finger Drums, Spotify, SreenshotMee etc. All say 'download error' then when trying again, fails with the same error: "unable to continue installation due to unresolved error".

I've tried this on both wifi and 3g.

I'm attaching some poor quality photos, as I can't even take screenshots.

Note I can't remove the application by holding down the icon and clicking the 'x' for the compass app, I get a "Can't delete OK" dialogue box.

I only enabled dev mode later to see if it would let me uninstall things, but it didn't help, enabling/disabling it doesn't make a difference.

Thanks for any help :)

WiFi, Bluetooth on always. Usually a half dozen apps running all the time (clock, calendar, battery usage among others).

Finally it seemed like it just got gummed up (how's that for a technical term?) so I shut it down and restarted (probably only the third restart in the time I've had it.) Smooth as glass again.

As yet I haven't turned Developer Mode on.

I'm not in the habit of rebooting my phone often - I used to let the N900 run for a l-o-n-g time. Anyone else seen anything like this?

Check memory consumption and check especially how much dirty memory (=non-recoverable until app exists) is consumed.

Re: N9 owners: answer questions & get help!

I've got 2 problems thus far:

Not sure if this is a problem with Nokia link or the media player application on the N9, but it doesn't seem to pick up changes to playlists.

I've twice deleted all music and playlists, only for Nokia link to tell me that the device doesn't have enough room onboard. The N9 itself reports plenty of room, so I'm not sure where Nokia link is getting its data.

The second issue is MfE. The error message implies that it can't connect to the server, but the server is reachable from my home network.

Any help is appreciated.

I had the same concern. I have a 3+year old US t-mobile mini sim I was going to attempt to cut myself. The chip does not look like the ones in the link but like this:

http://share.ovi.com/media/Drekkie.m.../Drekkie.10001

I took it to the T-mobile store where they had not heard of the N9 so they just put it in a sim cutter to try it (so if they messed up then at least they would replace it for me). It works fine.

EDIT: that's a pic of the cut sim in the N9 holder.

It is durable in a sense that it will protect the inner parts of the telephone adequately. (inner parts, not the screen)

Actually dents are not that bad - the device is way too slippery and that will problem will increase once the matt surface wears off due to daily use.
It will turn into a semi-glossy one with some battle scars here and there.

Only the upcoming white version will start looking pretty ugly soon due to dirt residing in many micro scratches.

for those of you in the states and have tmobile, I walked into the store yesterday, asked if they have micro-sims and the guy gave me one for free. so doesn't hurt trying to walk into a store first before you cut your sim down.

and actually the guy for a second thought he ran out of micro-sims and was about to cut down my current sim for me, but then he remembered he had some in the back.
