Re: Dell Releases What n900 Should Have Been (Dell Streak)

I've been looking for a replacement for my 810 since I bought it in 2007.
I really wanted the same size, unix, better camera, and a source for stylii :).

I "cut my teeth" on an HP95LX about 1995, then went thru a 100LX and 200LX. Then sat it out until the 810 came along. I tried a slew of PDA's, none fit the bill.

The bill:
Screen of decent size
Easy input
OS I can work with (I'll have to learn some Android:( )
Good connectivity
Community support (I learned early on never rely on mfg support)
Storage

Everything that's come along since has been useless to me. The Dell looks like it will fit in my shirt pocket. And to me one of the most important thing is to have your tools with you. It will be at about the max range of shirt pocket, but I won't need cargo pants.

Since 1995 I've been one of the geeks that when something came up in a meeting I could usually just whip out my computer and get an answer or fix things. I've remoted into Unix computers in Bosnia to fix things, with my 95LX. Ever since I got the N810 my peers were amazed. They would have to "go to their computer" or "get the laptop", I'd just wi-fi in and have the answer.

The iPhone looked great, but too small. The Newton and iPad too big.

I hope to be able to order my Streak soon.

I picked up a Dell Streak as a companion device to my n900. Thanks Fonebank £260 for 3GS. I use the streak for Google Maps navigation, browsing and various alternatives to n900 functions. The best of both worlds. A nice ssh tool ConnectBot and c:geo for Geocaching.
I love the n900, it is and will remain my primary device. If it was a choice between the 2 it would be no contest. However, for train journeys the n900 and streak combination removes the need for a laptop or netbook.
On the storage side I have 32GB in the streak and 48GB in the n900.

@lynjar
I am glad that you are happy and satisfied with your N900. What raises my curiosity is why the Streak should be so lacking in your comparison.

If you could find the time to elaborate perhaps you could post in more detail?

Where does the Streak fall short? Is it in screen quality – clarity, resolution, sharpness, colour reproduction.

Or is it more related to general optimisation, overall speed including opening web pages.

Is it lack of compatibility with standards, e.g. Flash, video playback, audio playback, codec support. Could it be to do with a paucity of useful applications?

Do you find the size and weight to be unwieldy? Is it the physical keyboard on the N900 that makes all the difference for you?

Sorry for so many questions but you are adamant in your preference for the N900, no reason why not so I am not posing this as an argument or a challenge, it is just that I would have expected there to be less of a difference in it then you clearly have found.

I am puzzled as well by the combination of these two devices in order not to have need for a netbook. Can you elaborate here as well? What is you do on a netbook than be done equally as well on a Streak and what else on the N900 and vice versa.

To declare my interest, the Streak is on a short list of two at the moment and I really need more personal opinions to help me decide. Also I can’t help but experience a twinge of envy over the contents of your gadget bag. I hope you get great enjoyment and use from your devices.

Thanks for the reference to Fonebank, i too am selling a 3GS in order to help fund my next purchase and this source is new to me.

err, that link talks about nokia products...

not that i would mind a 7" meego from nokia (tho i would worry about long term support until proven otherwise).

Support documents are available here:

According to the Quick Reference Guide, you have to hold the camera key for 3 to 4 seconds to start the camera!

...or, touch the Camera icon... you likely don't want to take random pictures of the inside of your pocket...

Does the streak have FM transmitter ? I dont see it in specs...
Or could it be added by car dock, or with some kindof universal cigaret-lighter-usbcharger-fmtransmitter device?

Any news on the Streak's launch? I heard rumors it was suppose to launch on AT&T today.
