Re: Mobile Phones Direct N900 Customers

Tell you what, should CPW start selling it (or taking pre-orders) and MPD still haven't started sending out N900's I'd try and get CPW to match my MPD deal (T-Mob, free phone, etc) and move to them. But for the moment, I hate to say, MPD is the best bet at getting it on the deal I have as soon as I *should* get it.

I'm actually away all next week then back home for 1 week then off to stop with the family until the new year, so for me if it's not here during that 1 week window (w/c Mon 14th Dec) then I'll seriously consider canceling my order!

Now i cant remember who said it but someone claimed that if there were a recall then nokia would have to make it public. This is not the case. That only happens when the product is being recalled for health and saftey reasons, ie might burst into flames. If its not a dangerous fault they wont make the recall public, I know this because were i used to work i was managing the warehouse and delt with ALL the product recalls. some where made public by the manufacturer, for instance a zanussi dishwasher that could potentially catch fire was recalled and zannussi made a press realese regarding it but other products with a manufactering fault that is not dangerous simply get recalled but no press release is done by the manfacturer. I'm hoping this isnt the case but if it is at least we may well all get devices with working mics!

That is a very good point.

The PSU in my PC failed with tons of smoke and when I reported it to the company (Antec) they told me they had recalled that model. I had another PC with one still working in it, they replaced that one too despite it working so clearly it was a recall. But there was never any mention of this recall on their website or in the press, they just waited for defective units to come in under warranty and replaced with a new, better model.

I'm not even sure they recalls stock from the retailers, I think they just discontinued the model and waited until stock dried up. Bearing in mind that had the potential for quite dangerous (if you are in the same room as the PC and it blew while you were sleeping) burning resistor/capacitor smoke, it clearly points out how many recalls must go on sneakily without telling anyone.

Re: Mobile Phones Direct N900 Customers

I hate MPD in every way, shape and form. Their customer service is a disgrace. Their communication is a disgrace. Will I cancel my order? Only if I can get a better deal once its released properly. If the fulfill my order, I'm getting a VERY good deal. Money talks - more so than their customer service department does!

Will I buy a Nokia again? Only if the N900 lives up to the hype...

I suspect they will do the same as last time. Wait until the 3rd (as that is the the date the last e-mail said it would ship) THEN send an e-mail telling us all its been delayed again.

I hope not and that they do ship this week, but I am not feeling very positive.

I sent an email to NFS enquiring when it will be in stock (with a contract) if I cancel my MPD pre-order.

Jon from NFS replied that if I cancel my MPD order (7th of November) and re-order from NFS, I will not get the device any sooner (probably he said it will take longer) since both NFS and MPD will receive the next batch at the same time and pre-orders have already been prefilled.

Re: Mobile Phones Direct N900 Customers

This sucks - if it weren't for the fact i had been looking forward to this device for so long, i#d have cancelled weeks ago.

to be quite honest - i've always had a policy of going straight through the shops, o2, voda, orange etc. as when things go wrong they are always sorted there and then.

for instance - even after ive told o2 i was cancelling my contract and needed a PAC for the n900 voda contract, i broke it. I only pay a fiver a month for refurb insurance - but they sent me a new boxed n95 with all the garb, car charge, mains, ear phones, updated software etc. etc. (bare in mind this is on a sim only contract as well, which makes it more amazing!)

My friend however, has an iphone through carphone warehouse on o2 - broke it just over a month ago and took it into CPW - they are still waiting for it to be "fixed".. after a month? had this been directly through the company it would have been sorted that week - and on their doorstep i should imagine.

I think after much careful consideration i shall be axing my dreams of an n900 after yet another delay - i shall wait and see if this is sold through an operator, or alternatively wait for the next meamo device - which with current technology cycles i should imagine comes out early summer. This new device i should imagine will be sold through one of the operators as they are said to "fix" (in other words update) the phone functionality on maemo devices.

also on that point, they have already announced the next meamo 6 device as a "smart phone" - not a tablet - so will be on operators store shelves rather than vendors. peace and quiet here i dcome - plus i could do with the cash for christmas shopping. maybe i'll spend the extra cash on blowing up MPD? :D

Re: Mobile Phones Direct N900 Customers

Well at least i can see why they never took the 2nd lot of £2 from my account if we arent getting the phone for another few weeks. When it is delivered i will be on my holiday in Oz and wont be back till the end of January. It's a shame that my deal is so nice it isnt worth cancelling, i'll just have to use my xperia in Oz rather than my N900 and pay for two contracts for a month.

Re: Mobile Phones Direct N900 Customers

here is my update based on the conversation I have just had with MPD in the Nokia Flagship store @ Regents St.

First of all, forget about CPW, you will not be able to buy this phone from anyone but Nokia/mpd ON CONTRACT this side of xmas. They might be advertising it, but they won't have it before next year.

I was going down there to cancel my MPD order and re-order in sore with a vodafone contract. While he was willing to do this for me, I was advised that it would not get me the phone any quicker as any stock that came in was reserved for pre-orders, and this is where it gets interesting.
Last Fri, they were expecting in a delivery of 1000 n900's, they got 100!! These units went on clearing some of the backlog from the september pre-orders. Now the guy claims that they are operating a first come first served process, not just for the people who ordered in person, but for the online orders as well?!? The stock coming in from Nokia is going to those who ordered in store and those that ordered online through MPD on a date ordered basis...

Can anyone confirm who picked their phone up last weekend whether they ordered online from MPD or just in store???

He claimed that the delivery date of the 4th is still on, not because he knew the stock would be in, but because Nokia themselves have been widely publicising the 4th as the release date and it would be a PR disaster if they fail to meet that.

His best advice for me was to wait until Thurs night, they would know by then whether the order was in, how many units etc and then make a choice over whether to switch to vodafone or not. His personal reccomendation was to wait it out, as I would not be able to get as good a deal as my t-mobile deal through vodafone.
He (obviously) blamed Nokia, as they were not meeting their shipments and the deliveries that were coming through were 10% of the amount that had actually been ordered

What I can do is pop in there Thurs night and give you guys a heads up on whether they have had a delivery or not and then you can take it from there..

but if that is the case wouldnt nokia have not delivered any devices, but realistically that wouldnt be any reason to delay delivery, how do nintendo know if you do or dont have the original games.
i expect the delay is more likely to be down to bad management at MPD, they cant manage their customers expectations, they cant manage their order tracking, they cant manage their staff so they all sing from the same hymn book.........

Oh yeah, I do agree. I just think that someone at MPD would know outright if those phones were on their way as they'd have a tracking number....full stop! So they're either misinforming their staff or are just plain stupid.

Nokia of course are ultimately to blame for all of this - this is a disgrace. Lets hope Jon is correct - can Nokia really handle another PR disaster?...

Re: Mobile Phones Direct N900 Customers

well, i waited ages for concrete release info, have ignored the criticism of MPD and nokia (and the fact the phone has a resistive screen) and have fallen hook, line and sinker for this 'dec 3rd' figure, ordering with MPD, voda contract, 18 months.

have just (nearly) completed 18 months with an orange BB contract, but at least there were some software updates to make it feel a bit newer in that time. hopefully the adaptability of the n900 will make the timeframe bearable (and i'll be able to get through every SNES game i've never played). plus i want to be in a position to upgrade to a maemo 6 device if the n900 turns out not to be compatible. worked out better value than the 24 month too.

one thing i don't get is these people who add up the contract costs (including unltd web and text), come out with a figure bigger than the sim-free cost and decide it's better value. am i missing something?

fingers crossed either way. as long as it comes before xmas i don't really care.

Yes, to compare like with like, we add up the sim free cost of the phone plus the cost of a suitable sim only phone service over the same period (12/18 month)

because the total cost of my 18month Tmobile n900 order is £467, which makes it £75 more expensive than the cheapest sim-free deal for the n900.

given that i spend £10/month on PayG credit currently (which is about as cheap as it is possible to be), if you take the sim free cost of £392 and add £180 in monthly cost you come to a grand total of £572.

which makes it £105 more expensive to go sim-free for a product that has ZERO data and less minutes/texts than the contract will provide.

that make it any clearer?
