Re: The EPIC N9 anticipation thread
Oddly the menu says 7MP:
damion@pants:/tmp$ exif 20110621_001.jpg EXIF tags in '20110621_001.jpg' ('Intel' byte order): --------------------+---------------------------------------------------------- Tag |Value --------------------+---------------------------------------------------------- Manufacturer |Nokia Model |N950 ... ... It's 3522x3000 in its maximum size. Video is terribly broken up in mplayer which reports: VIDEO: [mp4v] 1280x720 24bpp 300.000 fps 0.0 kbps ( 0.0 kbyte/s) Opening audio decoder: [faad] AAC (MPEG2/4 Advanced Audio Coding) FAAD: compressed input bitrate missing, assuming 128kbit/s! AUDIO: 48000 Hz, 2 ch, s16le, 128.0 kbit/8.33% (ratio: 16000->192000) It wasn't broken up in vlc. I'll try on the PS3 which I'll be quite excited about if that works as the n900 mp4s don't work. I've enabled usb syncing and it send dhcp requests to my usb0 (My desktop is linux) but I don't have a dhcp server listening to that interface. I was hoping to nmap it and see if it's listening on anything. I can't see any way to install a terminal and it's asking for a software update for the store. I need to hand it back as it's the end of the day now but will try and play more tomorrow. Oh I nabbed the useragent: User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (MeeGo; NokiaN950-00/00) AppleWebKit/534.13 (KHTML, like Gecko) NokiaBrowser/8.5.0 Mobile Safari/534.13 Note that it doesn't work with youtube at all, html5 in the browser apparently just means most of the latest html5 stuff, not working <video> tag, so without flash it's pretty useless. Also when scrolling up I kept switching to the menu in portrait mode. This seems to only have 16GB or storage, divided up much like the n900 with loads of vfat and 2GB of app space. |
Re: The EPIC N9 anticipation thread

Re: The EPIC N9 anticipation thread
"Nokia is planning to ship the N9 to stores later this year, and announce availability and pricing closer to the start of sales. (Don’t be surprised if this one isn’t cheap.) And it may not be long before it hits shelves: one source close to Nokia says the company would give out a developers’ edition of the phone straight away, while a full commercial edition will be available within a month." :)

Re: The EPIC N9 anticipation thread
As a side-note, the 16:9 image resolution from the 12mpix sensor on the N8-00 is actually 9mpix, so it's pretty close to the 8mpx on the N9. In addition, the N9 has a f/2.2 lens, soo... It looks good?

https://meego.com/community/device-program edit: through the community device program only 250 devices are available, they will be sent out from next week on. through the commercial (commercial doesn't mean you can buy one) device program at http://developer.nokia.com there are much more. I mean MUCH more. |
Re: The EPIC N9 anticipation thread
I don't know if this was mentioned before: The port in the image below looks way bigger than a regular micro usb port.
http://blog.gsmarena.com/pics/11/06/...marena_008.jpg It actually looks like a MHL port: http://www.google.com/url?source=img...SyFBmOKIIdUkCA |

@ Chrome
I hope thats the case as it would make this phone a much more attractive option, although Slashgear did say that it was only micro USB, so here's to hoping. Does anyone know if it's confirmed that there is no usb on the go? |

The coding competition has nothing to do with the community device program. If you've done someting for the maemo/MeeGo community in the past, or plan to do so, just apply for the device program. I wish you all good luck! Quote:

Re: The EPIC N9 anticipation thread
i think everyone should have a browse through here:
http://www.developer.nokia.com/swipe...g_started.html I have to say i'm very impressed. They've really learned alot from previous mistakes and upped the game. is anyone planning on developing for this? i've an idea for an integrated app which i wouldn't mind seeing, i'm not a developer and i've no time to learn. |

MHL: MHL is connection agnostic (i.e., not tied to a specific type of hardware connector). The first implementations dual-purpose the most popular mobile connection (micro USB) and the most popular HDTV connection (HDMI). Other than the connectors being used, no USB nor HDMI technology is being used. It is exclusively MHL signalling through the connectors and over the cable. Other proprietary and custom connections are also allowed. |

I understand they will be (have been) handed out to reviewers, devs, partners, carriers, commercial devs and so on, but the production figure still seems high to account for the difference. At least I hope commercial developers are obliged to write software if they receive a free/leased Dali. Any info on that? |

Re: The EPIC N9 anticipation thread
For those missing the FM transmitter, most other phones don't have one either. So you could just get one of the many bluetooth fm transmitters available. I couldn't find one that supported NFC, but I'm sure those will come soon too.

my development tools also instantly updated, it can compile Qt programs to run on harmattan that were designed using the symbian and maemo 5 targets with like 2 clicks. I already tested that much, just need a developer device now ;) |

To be honest, I would have preferred that Nokia distributed some devices via the Meego Coding Competion, where the merit of a developer's work is judged by users/other developers. I'm not entirely comfortable with being 'gifted' a device by some Nokia guy. It gives me the uneasy feeling of being in Nokia's back pocket. I'm sure I'll change my mind if I get one. Then it will be 'Hail Nokia!' :D |
Re: The EPIC N9 anticipation thread
Why do people always look at products from their point of view?
I have seen lot of posts saying what the N9 hasn't and not promoting what it has. Do you think that Nokia has targeted the N9 with the same intentions as with the N900? N900 was a gift from Nokia in the pre-MicroSoft era. regards |

I'll even expound. Most people are buying based on comparisons with competing manufactures and OS's. If Nokia keeps releasing "premium" devices at premium costs without premium hardware people most likely aren't going to bite. The average client who wants a easy to use smart phone has either gone or is going with apple and it's Nokia's hope that they'll also go with Microsoft's phone 7. People who are still undecided are going to want something that can match the competition at the same price. You may point out that the iphone wasn't always the latest in technology but where the iphone usually fell back on was processor speed or ram and even then not by much. in area's like their screen were they were obviously deficient they came back and smoked the competition. Where they've fallen back they've been either quick to catch up or surpass the competition when they do. The beauty of Apple is they've always known where to cut and where to add on to. but within apples product line you almost never ended up with a product that does less than it's lower priced equivalent. Having said that, I don't want a iphone or an android phone. I would like to get the next Maemo/Meego phone but I'm left stumped wondering why, after almost 2 years, this is almost an upgrade and almost not. This N9 is not a mid tier priced device. I expect it to also have the equivalent functionalities of other equivalently priced phones and at the very least important functionalities that mid tiered priced devices have. This isn't about wanting the fastest phone in the world and not being happy because specs aren't all above the rest. but this about wondering why Nokia is asking such a pretty penny for a product that doesn't have the very useful functions that they've included in their other products. Functions that really could have been added easily and not added much to the cost or size of this phone. |

Re: The EPIC N9 anticipation thread
Ok here is another quick question about the N9, it takes a micro sim. So I have an old school plan with AT&T on my N900 and they think I have some old samsung phone with data, and they haven't changed it yet, so I am paying something like 9.99 for unlimited data. There is no way in hell I'm going to them asking for a micro sim and having my plan all changed up. So is there a process to clone a regular sim onto a micro sim, or is there a way to mod the sim (by cutting it) to a compatible micro sim?
|
Re: The EPIC N9 anticipation thread
Wait for somebody that really knows, but i believe you can cut it. So i have heard.
My microsim looks exactly same as the normal one, chip is same size, but the plastic around it is almost nonexistent. |
