Why on Earth can't the N900 do 1900Mhz in 3G but can in 2G?
The N900's radio supports the following frequencies for GSM/2G: 850/900/1800/1900 and HSPA/3G: 900/1700/2100. Rogers supports GSM/2G: 850/1900, HSPA/3G: 850/1900.
So this is what I don't get: if the N900 and Rogers both support 850 and 1900 Mhz why is it that 1900 on the N900 is supported only in GSM/2G and not in HSPA/3G? Clearly if the N900 supports 900Mhz both in 2G and 3G so supporting 2G and 3G over the same frequency is a software issue. So what I don't get is why the N900 can't do 1900 in 3G? |
Re: N900 in Canada (Toronto)
You actually need an uplink and a downlink that are supported in the HSPA/3G frequencies. If you only have one, then as I understand it, it will default to 2G.

Re: N900 in Canada (Toronto)
EIPI, does it mean that to get the full HSPA download speed we need HSPA upload frequency as well (ie it can't use GSM upload frequency)?

Re: N900 in Canada (Toronto)
Can someone summarize for me. Even if I have a US version N900, I am only going to get 2G (EDGE) data service in Canada with it?
Why do I feel like I live in a 3rd world country???? Is it too much to expect to be able to walk in to a Rogers outlet and buy one? |
Re: N900 in Canada (Toronto)
@OrangeBox - I am not too versed in all the details, but I read somewhere that you need two independant 3G frequencies available in order to use the N900 at 3G speeds. No carrier in Canada currently offers this.
@dgenge - I think the frequencies for 3G that the N900 use are common in Europe and Asia. The new spectrum that was auctioned off last year is what we need to use for the N900. But no carrier currently is providing service on that AWS spectrum. |
