Re: [REQUEST] Community purchase plan for the Nokia N9

well guys im going to visit Mexico city this saturday, i will go check the Nokia store and ask for n9. If they have it im planning to buy at least 3 devices with my money (god thank credit cards). I might find them or not, but if i do and you want me to buy you a device then be prepared to do a fast transaction. Most of banks do not open on Saturday but i think we can use paypal. Any money i get transfered will assure you a device (if they get released this weekend) if they get released i will buy it from you and ship it this monday. if they do not get released you can choose to get the money back or wait until it gets released. First in line serves first. So if you are interested send me an email and will see details.

Upon picture(s), I have the money in my Paypal. Luck to you, but as far as I can tell, as of today the N9 is still not released.

Ask if English is included in the price(s) too, btw.

Nokia Mexico isn't sure if the English-US or even English-GB is included in the price of the phone.

Meaning it might cost extra to not read your phone in Espaņol.

UGH! Nothing's worse than spending all that money just to buy a cell phone that can only take pictures in Spanish!

Android. The stock firmware for almost any Android phone and tablet has NO Indic fonts. I have had to root 2 Android devices I own and every other friends Android device to get Indic fonts on them.

Nokia phones on the other hand have always worked.
But.. "who cares about that old outdated dying company and OS? No one uses it anyway, right?... Right?"

Beep! Wrong.

That's not entirely accurate. It depends on the handset and the region for which it's targeted/sold. Many (India-targeted models in particular) have that support already baked in at sale.

Here's a posting that summarizes it pretty well:

To all those reading this thread... I agree that Android does not have support for Hindi (Devanagari) indic script for all the phones. However some manufacturers like Samsung, LG and Sony Ericsson are releasing their android versions with Devanagari support. But they are not providing support for all of their phone models. The phones that I have tested and provide good support for Devanagari are as follows:

1. Samsung Galaxy Ace GT-S5830 (Support exists from Froyo 2.2.1)
2. LG Optimus One LG-P500 (Support added from Gingerbread 2.3.3)
3. Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc (Support out of the box running Android 2.3)

This shows that there are some packages that need to be bundled in the android update. All these manufacturers are are taking base image of the Google release and customizing it region wise where the phone is going to be sold. This customization is similar to adding APN list of the cellular provider of that region.

Google has done a fantastic work on Indian language in GMail why can't they add this to their core?

Probably as per Google's strategy they give bare bone software to OEM partners and these partners (LG/Samsung etc) go and add region wise stuff. If Google includes all the languages under the sun, it may become bulky and not will get used hence leaving to the partners is better approach. But some OEM partners like HTC are not doing region wise build to make their life easier. HTC is putting the same software image for Europe and India and Asia.

Another reason why these partners don't customize all the phones - they have a target segment of customers. High end users/top business executives in India generally avoid using Hindi or local languages. Phones which are in low and mid range are mass market phones where usage of local language is more and if these people are targets then adding local language feature becomes important for company from marketing angle.

Fewer and fewer, statistically.

All it took was to switch one font file. One. Thats all I needed to get Unicode fonts. WTF was the manufacturer / Google thinking about when they could have just included a Unicode font file that supports everything?

And it's not like it's patented technology requiring costly licenses or additional software support. I used a freely (as in freedom) available font.

But I digress. Lets get back to the original thread topic: Nokia N9: Gimme!

since you didnot mention anything about you not being in position to answer the initial question, can we take your answer as an answer from Nokia USA in general.
thanks.

they will not support it no matter what anyone tells you.

these devices have origin codes and the esn/imei is slated to specific countries....they can track it. so for alabama...unless you live right there, you need to go online to check your warranty.

i would suggest making the purchase, getting a reciept and then getting a squaretrade warranty. if it breaks, no questions...if they cannot fix it, you get your money back.

had to do that with my first e90 i bought on ebay for 1200....got it all back because the mic was broken!
