The specs on the Snapdragon 835 and not that bad at all.
https://www.qualcomm.com/products/sn...obile-platform

According to Chen it will be a 2.45 ghz Snapdragon 835

Re: Are you Ready? F(x)tec Pro 1 HW Keyboard Phone

I don't know why people are crying due to snapdragon 835. Normally in this price you should receive SoC for medium range phones almost without GPU. 835 is maybe 2 years old but it is a flagship SoC, which is better than actual medium range SoC from this year.

I think 835 is a lot better choice than actual equivalent of 821.

Also, We should remember about work and effort to make a slider mechanism in these days. I'm sure that was over 80% of development costs.

835 was announced November 2016. Our phone will ship in July making that SOC closer to 3 years old. In tech time that's a very long time. Doesn't really matter I guess but when you're spending $650+ that's flagship money. It's tough to compare this phone to anything else because there are no other keyboards out there

Re: Are you Ready? F(x)tec Pro 1 HW Keyboard Phone

lol while everyone is bitching about SD835, I remember at one point he was considering 600 series due to the cost. Depending on what you want to run on it, unless one runs Android (if the provided android image is treble-enabled) it should get another year of security updates, otherwise if you run something like sailfishOS then it should still be updated regardless.

Am happy with the choice (though I really prefer it to be SD845). However, I still need to figure out how much does it cost to ship to my country before deciding whether to buy one as my spare phone heh.

Ready to pay now for two units,

(funds cached for just this purpose)

as soon as is credibly demonstrated

that some kind of genuine linux distro can boot and run on this.

You also need to think of chip availabilities for short runs, who knows what compromises chen had to make in order to get this far. It's all well and good imagining perfect unicorn devices but sooner or later the real world gets in the way.

If a slightly old SoC would put you off this device, then I guess you didn't really care that much about the keyboard, which is the whole point of the exercise.

Integrated keyboard plus decent (but not 2019 flagship) extras seems like a reasonable deal to me

since current one is Pro, I guess there should be a not-pro, then Mini version, in size of Sony xz1 compact or so. also maybe some Plus version like 6 inch 16:9 with top hardware.

also would be good to compete with blackberry at portrait qwerty market, since not everyone enjoys all locked-up, unrootable blackberries. so it would be make analogs for Priv and Keyone/two for sure. portrait slider may come fancy with modern fashion 'slide down for front cam' and make two-way slider like nokia N95/96.

also it would be fine to have some classics reborn too, like sonyeric M600 rocker-buttons qwerty and something in clamshell design like N92/93.

Portrait slider is welcome, be it a qwerty (like Passport - I like square display and passport form factor) or a T9 (has got to survive in a jeans pocket and be easy to fish out, without breaking). Open-hardware, open-source (Kai OS? for feature phone with T9 keyboard) and durable (metal, not plastic).

I do have a few questions before buying it.
  1. what type of storage is it, emmc, ufs 2(.1?)
  2. what type of ram lpddr4 or lpddr4x?
  3. does the phone support widevine drm L1
  4. if it does when you unlock the bootloader, does that L1 support go away, if it does if you relock it does it come back?

I am most likely going to buy it either way, just wondering about more details.

It will use UFS 2.1 and LPDDR4X
Will come back for the answer of 3 and 4

The time will be soooo long before the release of the Pro1. Even if there are things I don't like with this phone, it doesn't matter since it's the first usable phone with a physical keyboard we could have in years.
About the specs, if SFOS will run on it, it will run very well. This OS is still smooth on a Jolla1.

About the possible next, if F(x)tec can create a smartphone like the Nokia E6 (portrait keyboard, camera with no focus, worldwide network, very strong and big battery life), I'll gladely take it either :D

Just saw it at the moment : it's a little HS but could also interrest people here.
On the SFOS website, I found https://jolla.com/wp-content/uploads...?x54860&x54860 , which is about https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/cosmo-communicator#/ . It looks like the previous Gemini PDA, but with a from screen when it's closed.

No focus is a no brainer but why?
You like blurry pictures for some reason?

Camera with no focus will have no blur with anything from 50 cm. So you can't take any macro pict without an additional lens. But, there are few advantages : a smaller camera module with no mechanical parts at all, no need to focus so almost the whole picture will have no blur, and so the camera shutter is faster, you will have less blur movment than with a classical camera.
Between both kind of camera (with and without focus), there isn't really one which is better, it's only different way to take pictures.

"no focus" = "fixed focus"

In theory to "infinity". In practice, objects from a certain distance are in focus. The minimum distance depends on the optics (mostly focal length and aperture) and is usually from about 1m on classic 35mm film point-and-shoot cameras. A bit less on mobile phones due to different optical sensor size, i.e. different focal length and aperture.

I'm really impressed with how the device looks and what Chen has achieved so far. With basic SoC support already available in real Linux, now for the real question. How much are Fx Technology willing to help with mainlining their device? If this device can run real Linux, without libhybris adaptations, it would be the perfect target for Maemo Leste and I would buy it in an instant.

MSM8998 might seem dated with shiny new 855 being around. But that was the best we could get (and afford) when R&D starts.

Despite being a 2017 SoC, it's still have one of the top tier performance, which will easily out perform anything so far in 6 series, even the 710 on benchmark. We know we are weaker than SD 845 and 855, but it should be better than probably the rest of all SoCs. And it's 10nm structure has a very good reputation on power control.

Back to topic, I will PM you separately about how we could contribute or work together on mainlining the SoC. It would certainly be a good direction not relying on Hybris. :)

Being one just got to know and fell in love with N900 and trying to make most out of it - and now people call it brick and jump for joy for another device. There probably will be a day when I can feel what you feel now. Maybe I come with that also 10 years late as with N900. But I give props to chen for the achievement and posting here. just waiting to read what people can and will do with the device.

No, the first presentation just said they guys behind it was planning to switch to another screen supplier. Not sure if it will be good or bad, true or false.
Chen has not officially commented that as far as I know.

It's correct. We have discovered some small issues with the current screen. We decided to change the supplier into a much bigger and reliable one one, and the process has already started. The est. delivery time has already taken into account the engineering and testing work related to the change. :)

Not sure. I got instant flashback from jolla troubles so I couldn’t really function correctly after I heard that :D
Big changes late in process doesn’t bobblibobado well from my experience so someone with insight, like chen have to clarify.

From the man himself, device is 225g. Probably the heaviest device I've ever owned. Easily eclipses the 4g slide and G2 which were heavy in their own right. I won't pass judgement until I see more in depth reviews and possibly hold one myself
